A New Massassi - an important read
2007-09-19, 11:44 PM #81
So we finally jumped the shark and the corrupted people finally took over.

The transition from old Massassi to this hybrid #Narsassi took more than I expected, tho'

Good riddance.

A shame to see Brian go, though. Still, props to him!

it's late and I don't actually have anything to say (I think I'm kind of the only one here who has never played JK or basically any other star wars related game) except that I heart massassi and we'll figure it out. I'll definitely put some thought into how we could market (I know, not a good word choice at all) the site once I've either slept or we have some clearer goals. I think that as long as the people stay, we have something good going, since that's definitely the reason I'm here.

Also: Thanks for everything, Brian. I think you've really changed a lot of people's lives. Except taht sounds too melodramatic. But you've created something good and most of us are excited to continue that.
Fincham: Where are you going?
Me: I have no idea
Fincham: I meant where are you sitting. This wasn't an existential question.

Although I'm not exactly super supportive of this idea, I'd like to get involved in it -- maybe as that outcast "former staff member" or whatnot haha

Some of those pre-pruned images define past experiences here (photoshop games anyone?). Maybe you shouldn't have done that as a friend, but as an admin you also have to separate friendship and authority.

Realizing that and acting accordingly is the only reason I praise you for it honestly. It's a tough ****ing thing to do, but I've learned with power comes responsibility--mostly for the worse. The only time anyone ever wants responsibility is when it's for money, and there's a goddamn good reason for that.

I fail to see any valid point here. The problem is that this is an emotional and personal deal for a few people here which drives some desire to continue the site. It just doesn't even make sense that a diverse group of people here are going to figure out a new direction and goal for the site. This site is JK/MotS based. It naturally expanded to cover the Jedi Knight series as it expanded to a new engine. That's it. It's done. We all came here originally for that type of content and then got trapped in the forums. Most of the newer types probably just stumbled on to the forum somehow and actually stayed. Nobody here needs this site to become anything else. We all already have other sites we go to that cover those needs.

Just close out massassi as any type of current website and allow it to represent what it has always been. Most people only come for the forum anyway so leave that as is although it would probably be a favor to us all if that went away so we would all have to go outside instead.

I disagree. I think that in the same way the site evolved to cover the rest of the series, there is a logical next step for the site. See what I mean?

Also I am scared of losing so many of my friends. :gbk:

Makes you wonder how humans are so capable of reading that, yet there aren't very good heuristics for computers to do it yet. I mean, we can do it in a split second, so what's so hard about it?

I'm happy wherever the 'focus' goes. I'd definitely like a simple forum/submission --> rate --> front page link system. It would mean I could log on and see interesting reviews, tips, guides and most importantly threads that are popular/funny/interesting on the font page rather than just bookmarking the forums...

And as for looking towards fark and /. why not look towards (just as inspiration, not in any form-copying sense) facebook? A better sense of interaction between members might be fun/useful.

Anyways, massive man-love to Brian :D

There is no next logical step. Maybe another Star Wars FPS will come along that garners some modifying support but short of that you essentially have to move to another franchise or completely change the focus of the site. Most JK fans bought MotS and then moved on to JO and then on to JA because that was the progression of the series. Massassi was based around that and it should stay that way. If a few people here want to make a new site focused on something else then more power to them. It's just clingy in an annoying girlfriend type way to morph this site into something else.

Let Massassi retire gracefully.

What will happened to the other sites that Brian has kindly been hosting? JKHub has been doing fairly steady editing traffic for the last couple of years, and I'd hate to see that just die when Brian's server is turned off.

What? Hard work? Pfft... you're crazy! In fact, let's jump on the Internet bandwagon and try one or more of these get-rich schemes! ( )
  • Massassi WEBCOMIC! If Penny-Arcade can beat out every other website out there, that must mean Massassi should focus on webcomic content! We can use JediKnight sprites and steal be inspired by Al McDonald's material...
  • Massassi SEARCH ENGINE! Google has become god of the internet -- we should do what works! Why have anything on our own site when we can just direct people to the sites they really want to go to? Or why search the internet when you can get it all at...
  • Massassi WIKIPEDIA! All we have to do is drug Jon'C up on stimulants so he never sleeps, and he can provide answers to everything!
  • Massassi CAMHOEZ SITE! People like Myspace and Facebook and flickr and so many other sites which allow you to whore out your photos -- Massassi will just have a constantly-updating page of random photos of members, their pets, their trips to random locations like a bad slide show...
  • Massassi eHARMONY! ...OK, so by this, I mean the opposite, where people who have broken up go to and drown their sorrows and harden their broken hearts. Hey, it's not like we don't have enough "girl problem" threads to change this much already.
  • Massassi PR0N! Throw that whole "G-rated rule" that makes this site unique from all the other trash on the Internet -- the internet is for PORN! That'll get people to Massassi!

Of course, I'm also all up for Massassi INTERACTIVE STORY BOARD! It'll be glorious! At last, I won't have to rely on my monkeys to try and produce the greatest literature ever, but humans! Then PETA won't be bothering me anymore! Er... :ninja:

Welp, as a long term member, I of course have much to say.

JK isn't any deader than its community. Anyone here can and would still play JK with the time. It's not that JK is dead, its that the community that grew up with JK has well... grown up. People still have talent in JED, levels can still be made, and from what I have seen, improvements to the game as well.

I do agree it should no longer be a JK series based website alone. Maybe we should take into consideration what "The Massassi Temple" really means. It was a hidden base, or community. I think as we stand right now, its what we are. We don't get many new faces in here, most of us have been around for ages. To me, the most important thing is to maintain the community.

Perhaps the only way to settle this is by deciding if we really want to expand and gain more users and new people. Or continue to be the hermit hole of the internet. I really don't care what direction the site goes as I don't visit it much anymore. (Except on the occasions I install and play JK) So long as the years worth of mods and levels remain intact I will be satisfied. Too many people have worked too hard to lose all that information.

I'm thinking of making a massive torrent for all the old files.

In any case, the old files are not going anywhere. Brian's concern of the files being lost is a real one, sure, but I also have backups at my house to cover this. (I think you do also, right Brian?)

As far as the torrent, this is how I am planning it:

A. .zip file for every section (JKSP, JOMP, JAMOD, etc). Thus, if you don't want, say, the JA levels, you can instruct your torrenting program to skip it.
B. A "best of massassi" torrent, with the highest-rated JK, JO, and JA levels/mods.

Regardless, I'll be keeping the current file system as long as possible. It's not something I'm in a hurry to fix.

As far as Brian's post, I'll tackle that:

1. While I do think that editing would be nice for Massassi, that's really hard for us. Most of this current community doesn't edit the newer games, and there ARE strong communities already in existence for the big names, like Half Life 2. And you can bet your bottom dollar UT3 will be grabbed by every major site possible.

However, if it does appear that Force Unleashed (which realistically speaking is still a ways off) is editable, then I'm sure we'll probably take advantage of that.

2. We're still way in the early planning stages, I have no interest in just suddenly folding over Massassi right now. I will absolutely be selecting people to assist with this, and I was actually hoping more people would volunteer in this thread >.>

3. Read above :p

Agreed. I suppose this could be a form of slashdot, fark, etc, but more focused on good discussion of the topics. In this case, hopefully attracting more intellectual people from sites like Digg that are just bloated with morons. Heck, I see so many Digg articles showing up as threads here anyways.

Well said. Thanks so much, Brian. Despite any mistakes made, I see a lot of wisdom and well handled responsibility in your ownership and upbringing of Massassi, or at least in what I've been around for. I have nothing but respect for you, along with many of the long-term members/admins here. I truly love this community and all the people involved; I would hate to see it drift away. Thanks.

Also, thanks CM for taking this on. While I can understand some people's resentment of the switch, I feel that you have the ability to preserve what Massassi is and the community that pushes it onward. I do agree with Brian about having a group to coincide in for decisions; I find this important in any leadership role.

Originally posted by JediKirby:
This can only mean good for massassi. Those of you who see this as a problem are quite misguided: Brian's been nothing but a figurehead for 3 years. He doesn't post, doesn't admin, and doesn't develop the site. I'm NOT saying Brian was a bad owner, or anything like that. What I'm saying is that Brian has had little to no affect on Massassi as a community.

Now we have the opportunity to make some major changes to the website that can happen at a much faster rate than they were. We can salvage what little decency our community has and possibly return to a better time. As far as I'm concerned, this website died about 2 years ago, and since then it's been nothing but a bone yard with hyenas. Now we can try to clean this place up and do something decent with it.

This puts the situation in a better perspective for me. I was really getting worried about the future here, but you are certainly right.

Forgive me if I've missed it entirely, but is this another transitional shift where Brian will still maintain administrative access, but ownership and all responsibilities move to CM?

I'll still be around to help the transition as well. This is news to me, but I'll not jump ship. Maybe we can actually establish a good rules system that we agree upon how to enforce?

As for the site content, I think we should stick to our roots. Expanding in other non-main sections but keep the primary focus of the site to Star Wars games, specifically keeping JK and MotS in high accord. I would love for our membership to grow and to see some new faces around. The elitist in me would like for there to be something to distinguish the old members from the new at some point. We're Massassians... They may not be. At least, not like we know Massassians.

But yeah, I would not mind being the "former staff member" that Brian recommended. I think I was here long enough and did enough to prove my worthiness (woohoo 3rd highest news post count :P ) :ego:
