Splitting up any existing forums is a bad idea. The forums are the only part of Massassi that gets much traffic, and the Discussion Forum is the part of the forums that gets the most traffic. Other forums (music, etc.) just get lost to most members. Isn't that why the Tech Forum was combined with the Discussion Forum? If you want threads split up by topic then do it in a secondary way.

If we want to host more gaming events then don't forget the Massassi Steam Community.

I think that having something solid aside from the forums would be a big booster. Reviews, files, editing information.

Oh and the mainpage is going to be flash. Itll be an abstract visualization based on the amount of posts per day and a few other things. Its gonna be SICK

I'm not splitting any of the forums. We'd have just a new section for "reviews" or whatnot, that is all.

I completely agree about not splitting up the forums, that's why I originally always opposed splitting them up in most cases. Splitting them up does just cause clutter and separation of the community. However, my thinking was that all the separate categories of forums would also exist as a consolidated discussion forum as the primary method of accessing them. All posts from all forums would be accessible from the same list, though they could be filtered if someone never cared about a particular segment (for example, I don't have JA, so I might not care about JA news or editing topics).

That way, it would in practice be LESS cluttered because it would really be only one big discussion forum, but with the ability to sort through it all by more than most recently posted in or specific searches.

Oh god no. Please no overdone flash on the mainpage. I like how Massassi's frontage is so nice and simple, why must people risk ruining sites with flash.

As for the forums, keep them exactly the same way they are. Seriously, isn't that what you said?

Also, I think Force Unleashed will PC eventually. LucasArts likes more money, it got a Wii version, no?

I think a general Star Wars/LEC editing site wouldn't be straying too far from what massassi is now and could therefore be achievable.

Would mainly require a re-modelling (would really need to be well planned & developed) of the site layout to make it easy to navigate, but different from other editing site formats (adds, big piles of levels etc). It would also need to attract people with an abundance of enthusiasm for the newer games to drive the site forwards, rather than attempting to over-utilise existing members with a moderate amount of enthusiasm for new platforms. Not that they wouldn't be able to contribute, but in the long run they wouldn't be able to sustain the activity/drive/enthusiasm, there would be a gradual transition required.

I think any attempt to increase site activity would struggle however without cultural changes, the forums here are very inwards-looking, if you turn up here, you're expected to be 22+, know how to fix a computer, use google before asking questions and be able to post in a technical discussion without embarrassing yourself (or able to keep out of the discussion in the first place). Most game editors these days I suspect are aged 15-21, irrespective of capability, which would have to be accomodated.

Another side effect of the size of the forums here is that you have the same personalities bouncing off each other in general discussion. Over a process of months it goes: flamewar-flamewar-ban-unban-flamewar-ban-unban-flamewar-permaban. Increasing the number of forums (assuming an increase in members) will dilute that effect.

got bored of reading responses around the end of page 2...

I'd say B with a big helping of A so that we don't lose what massassi was and hopefully still is...

This is where I could see an issue of attracting new members. As much as I don't want a forum full of LOL INTERNET retards, that seems to be the large group of people out there. What would our policy be on people like that?

We should be a gaming community.

Steamspace already does half the work for us.
2007-09-21, 12:58 PM #189
I think that 'B' would probably be the most sensible solution, because that will undoubtedly turn out to be the popular vote (and everyone loves democracy), and because it doesn't do away with Massassi's old philosophy, which has always tended to support games and their editing outside the Star Wars brand--Serious Sam being the main example. However, when I say 'B' I mean 'B' with certain stipulations.

Primary among these stipulations is that we should be open to covering every game, but that does not necessarily mean we should cover every game. We should pick and choose games carefully--limiting our coverage--because, assuming certain content attracts certain visitors, it gives us the power to regulate our visitors. I'm pretty sure most of you would agree that we don't want the Counterstrike 'community', for example, to infringe on this website, so the best way to regulate that is by not covering Counterstrike. How we choose certain games to cover is another matter, but, again, democracy is always a popular choice.

The website that best mirrors Massassi as well as demonstrates the strengths of selective 'general gaming' is TTLG. It's similar in size to Massassi, and it doesn't concentrate on any single game yet it isn't completely ecumenical or "general". However, it also mirrors Massassi in quality of community.

It must be said that TTLG is not technically a 'general gaming' site; games are chosen based on whether they are made by past employees of Looking Glass Studios. However, the real reason this is the criteria is because it is presupposed that these employees are talented game designers--so the overarching criteria for game selection is quality. I think similar criteria should be taken into account.

Anyway, whatever happens, we need a new main page logo. I never understood why there were transparent grey smears when I first came to this site as a slightly retarded child, and I still can't decide whether it's supposed to be shrink wrap or ghost jizz, two things I found hilarious as a slightly retarded child.
