A Change to the Empire Strikes Back DVD
2004-07-25, 6:03 PM #1
Probably the best scene change in the entire trilogy. They replaced The Emperor with Ian Mcdiarmid and changed his lines. James Earl Jones recorded a new line for the scene as well. I think it's fantastic.

Plus I thought they were releasing the ORIGINAL trilogy to DVD? Not edited.

Who replaced this scene? The SEs are supposed to be the final word on the original trilogy, for better or worse. Is this some hoax or what?

No, this is no hoax. They added Naboo to the end celebration of Return of the Jedi as well.

Is this leaked if it is even true? You wouldn't think that they would release something like this... Where did you find it?

A friend linked me to it, I couldn't say where it came from originally, but I am 100% positive this is official. Where would they get audio of Ian McDiarmid reciting lines for this scene if it wasn't real?

Here's some other shots of the DVD's, the transfer is incredible.

It's either Ian McDiarmid, or a damned good impression of him.

I love the way the emperor/sidious talks. it's so sibilant, and it's like every word is specifically thought out and coldly calculated.

I dont know what it is, but something seems off about luke in that pic. it looks like he was masked out of another scene in extensis mask and then placed into the shot in photoshop.

ugh.

Blue screen technology wasn't so advanced back in the early 80's, champ. The black lines are always there and they become more noticeable against lighter backdrops like Hoth and Tatooine.

I like the new audio, if it is real. Probably one of the FEW changes I'll like. Those transfers are damned good. The overall boost in saturation and detail is quite impressive. Still I'll wait on you guys to give me a report on how good/bad the box set is before I go and spend money on it. I'm still quite happy with the Trilogy VHS Box Set I got when they were re-released.

They'd better add the Yub Yub song back in... A great sadness overcame me when I first saw RoTJ SE and was deprived of my Yub Yub.

This is all wishful thinking. Lucas has made it clear that the SEs were the "definitive versions" (blech). Anyways, I just downloaded the video clip. I'll watch it now. What I would like to see is some sort of soure other than this one I dug up:

Thats absolutley a hoax, no way in hell is Jar-Jar gonna be the emperor, if this were to happen however unlikley it would throw the entire SW industry and fans into chaos, how many books and comics arent there with emperor palpatine and ect.

The Hayden ghost is symbolic. The spirit of Anakin Skywalker died in Episode III, and was finally liberated from his body when Darth Vader was destroyed in Episode VI.

Lucas is touching himself and snorting crack from in between a large black woman's breasts right now. You know what he's saying? "And in the next 3 movies I make, I'll have the jedi sit on their lightsabers and praise to the great god, Jar-Jar, as 300 years after RotJ, they worship him! Haha, then we'll completelly redo it in claymation and make another 30 billion off of that! Wait wait, by then we'll be able to make the CGI look even better than real life! We won't even need acters! I can rerelease each trillogy 100 times over, and buy a new body every time an old one dies! It's brilliant! HAHA! Lick more tarter sauce from my nipple, my big black kittens!"

Meh, the way I see it, it might make a bit more sense when you watch the movies in order. You have seen Obi-Wan in his older state, having quite an adventure himself in Episode 4. You have seen Yoda in his older state in Episode 5 & 6 till his death. Anakin is, however, only briefly seen as an old man. So for the audience, it might have a better resolution to see the Anakin from Episode 2/3 again, from how they truly remember him, one last time.

(but in my opinion? It wasn't *quite* necessary, but I do like the change. On the other hand, the video *does* appear to be a bit odd, but from what I've read and seen, it's quite authentic. And on another note, the Naboo addition is wonderful, I just saw it... works very well, fits right in, making the ending montage complete)

yeah, the redone ghosts of anakin/kenobi/yoda look too much like holograms. They should have more washed out colors and what happened to those sparkly rays around the edges? that's what made ghosts look different than holograms in the original movies

The only thing that really depresses me about the release is the Hayden change. Shaw's biggest moment in ROTJ was that one as it's the only time we ever saw Anakin himself. Lucas has no respect for the dead. -_-

Hayden really bothers me as well, I can't stand his acting and doesn't really deserve to replace Shaw, IMO. He really doesn't look in place either, look at his expression. It's like he's eyeing Leia!

How convient of Lucas to decide that Jedi spirits don't age when they succumb to the dark side NOW.

Buggy inconsistency: Considering Anakin has hardly worn the traditional Jedi robes much (and even then they weren't as chipper as others), I really doubt he would've worn those robes when he succumbed to the dark side. So why would he show up in'em?...

He never wore that type of cloak anyways, in AOTC he only wore a sleeveless one.
