Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 - 10th Anniversary
2007-09-26, 4:28 PM #1
Well, technically the anniversary isn't until Sunday, but I'll be out of town so I'm posting it now.

On September 30th, 1997 I went into Circuit City and grabbed one of the first copies of Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2. I still remember loaded the game on my trusty Pentium 166 w/no 3D card and running at a steady 15 fps in software mode. Ahhh, the good ol days.

10 years later the game is still enjoyable to play, namely in part to the hard work of the die-hard editors that refuse to call it quits. Thanks guys/gals. Yes, JK is 10 years old, but it would have been long since forgotten if not for you guys. So in my eyes you guys deserve just as much credit (if not more) then the games creators.

Long live JK!

Wow, haven't seen you in quite some time!

10 years is indeed amazing. Lots of memories.

Things I miss about the 'good old days' of Jedi Knight:

1) MSN Gaming Zone:
-A) Trying to get room #1 in Nar Shadaa.
-B) Always having tons of rooms to join and go play in immediately (during JK's prime).
-C) Corrupted Sysops :P
-D) Build cogs.
-E) Tournaments

2) New content:
-A) Sites like Massassi, Jediknight.net (hypermag anyone?), Outpost, JKMag, and so many more constantly provided new content to play with daily in JK.
-B) The development of TDiR.
-C) Army TC (What ever happened to this? :( ), JK Team Battle, The Phantom Menace TC, and so many more awesome conversions that were in production that never got a chance to see the light of day, yet left many fans drooling in anticipation.

3) Mysteries of the Sith:
-A) Saber dueling at Gantry and using chain lightning.
-B) Spaceport FF guns and getting to some of the secret areas.
-C) Carbonite gun and Seeker Rail Det, biggest newbie weapons ever invented, yet fun as hell.

Man I seriously miss those days, it's a shame the Zone had to take off Jedi Knight, it'd be interested if LEC could have rereleased JK or something in some sort of classic pack with MotS, and see if anyone would come back to play.

I was 9 when I started then.

I remember we camped Room 1 all the time in the Zone.

I had 1 for 3 months in a row in early 2001, and then idled it for half of a year in 2002, but that wasn't special because no one was on.

I love this game, and will load it up on a PC and make my kids play it. It'd actually be really cool if we started a new zone for our kids! We can let Rob and imsoshort play and give them a TRUE Zone experience.

20 years from now, if I can get JK to still run, I will go to that tiny lonely house in Baron's Hed and chill with Max.

Probably only will on a virtual machine by then. But it'll still be fast enough to run even stuff like BioShock.

Pretty cool that Lucas Arts decided to release the source in commemoration. I don't know but I hear that's a big deal.

I got this game for my birthday almost 10 years ago.

And then I found Massassi a month or two later.

I've attempted to play through JK and MotS again since 2004 but they always tend to crash for unknown reasons when I load quicksaves (or sometimes just change levels) on my current system :(

I'm thinking of buying it again, because my discs are so scratched.

I played it through with only a minor glitch - if I use "save" instead of quicksave, it would crash to desktop (but the save would be there waiting when I got back). That's on windows 2000 with relatively old hardware, though.

Yep, I played it first time through in software mode with the KEYBOARD on a p1 166. Later upgraded to a 233 and that was rad. Then eventually I got a voodoo addon card which made the whole thing amazing.

I don't remember the exact date on which I bought it, but it was soon after its release. I bought it on Edwards AFB in the Exchange, and they usually got games within a week of their release date.

2007-09-27, 5:51 PM #30
I remember one day I got pissed off at like 3 COG hacks ruining my game in a row, I went in and changed the repeater to shoot conc blasts and some other stuff and went around pwning people. IF you can't beat em join em.

But

JHS never got old.
NF BGJ ruled.
I always got lost on Drazen
2007-09-27, 6:37 PM #31
I remember waiting like, six years for Drazen to load.
Also i remember Fade cogs... Damn those were harsh. And their was one Cog that completely took away all keyboard functions. Forcing you to reboot.

I would love that. Wow. 10 years of JK.

If anyone ever wants to play again, PLEASE PM me. I just opened some ports and stuff in hopes I could play JK again, and if anyone wants to play I will.

I seriously dunno if I have played JK once this year. I think I have, but I know I haven't played it since I got my new computer (which was early this year)

I remember my brothers getting it. And them loading onto our crappy computer and it showing up as a blob of red and green pixels. We actually played through two or three levels before my other brother finally got a new graphics card. Then we could see the cut scenes and we marveled at them because they looked real at the time.

I miss those good old days. :)

Needs more pix

I was the happiest 9 year old when I got it. Since then, I lost the original cd casing and the box, but still have the book!
