You could have a professional do it.

I love trees. At least really tall ones. Small ones and middle-aged ones that people say they take care of are worthless. They just die out in a couple years because no one REALLY takes care of them. Older trees are great though. Yeah, I'm weird like that.

And I take it SAJN flamed/derailed this thread? With like, 7 edited posts...yeah I could be mean, but that might be flaming/derailing. So let's stick with "hug the trees!"

You should check your state constitution. I don't know about your state, but in mine, the government is required to pay compensation when they take property.
(I'm assuming you live in the US.)

It's not like they annexed my yard or anything, I think that the property line is universally where the sidewalk begins instead of out to the curb.

See, if the sideawalk was in front of my place was mine, I would be able to theoretically set up a toll booth and charge people a toll to cross my property. Since its technically illegal to walk in the street, I would have a monopoly.

It doesn't matter... at least around here. Something like a tree is considered part of the property. What state are you in?

Bleh. California's state constitution says you must be paid just compensation for land taken for public use. So all you can do is b**** about it.
Local governments suck the most.
