I have to travel many miles for "nature." Ergo I drown the city noise out with portable music.

Cabinet making?

Skill.

Hardly. Even I can make cabinets.
2007-10-02, 10:45 AM #44
Yeah, but can we tell them from packing crates?

Maybe you can.

Wood working is simple.

Cabinet making is not going to get you a job making boats.

Apprenticeships SUCK nine times out of ten.
2007-10-02, 2:14 PM #46
Yeah, anyone can make a cabinet. But an extremely nice cabinet involves carving, and a lot of time with a router. Anyway, its a stepping point. Learning a few woodworking skills before going to the Northwest school of wooden boat building gives me an advantage over other people going in with no skills.

Why not just learn to be a joiner or carpenter in general?
nope.
2007-10-02, 2:37 PM #48
There isn't a point to having an advantage over other people in apprenticeship program.

There is a set pace for the program. They don't care if you can make wood by thinking, you're learning it all from the beginning.
2007-10-02, 2:56 PM #49
Bull**** Rob. Complete and utter bull****. Just because the program is paced and taught from the beginning doesn't mean that a person with applicable skills won't have an advantage over the people who start with no experience of any kind.

In Greenboy's case, he'll already be familiar with the various tools of the trade, for example. His learning curve isn't going to be as steep as it is for other people.

LOL.

Uh, no.

Unless by 'cabinet' you mean 'box with a door on it', then maybe. :psyduck:

I know a cabinet maker who also makes (front) doors for high-end homes...you can't say it doesn't take skill.
woot!
2007-10-02, 3:07 PM #51
Running a router or using a planar isn't exactly hard.
2007-10-02, 3:08 PM #52
You can make a cabinet, maybe, but you probably wouldn't be able to make anything anyone would want to put in their home and would pay money for.

I think my favorite activity recently has been going climbing. Its only an hour or so, but ive been getting better so im happy with that.

I went down to Stonybrook park a few days ago for my photo class. Goodtimes!

Yes. There' more to it than making a box with shelves in it. Cabinet makers do all of the intricate carving and design work to make everything look pretty.

I could program that intricate carving in about an hour. :P

We have a grandfather clock my father built half by hand, half with CNC. (He didn't design or build the motion, just installed it)

So you what, inherited your father's ability to carve, knowledge of wood and its limitation, and idea of design through...genes? Who ****ing cares what your father did, this is about you. PS, you're not a badass, you can't do everything under the sun, and you need to stop putting down those people around you who have skills for the simple fact that you "think" you can do it too.

Though as to the you thinking part I'm really ****ing wary.

Well if I could, I'd be at the beach everyday for my "nature time" but I live sofrt of far away and the beaches aren't THAT great. Too many people and trashy beaches.

Pepperdine students have the nicest view of Malibu and walk to the beach in about 20 minutes. Malibu is rocky on some parts.

How are the beaches near your area?

This; hence, skill is what separates you from a cabinet-maker, Rob.

My dad's website: Go here and look at his furniture to see what a real cabinetmaker does.
DO NOT WANT.

why
2007-10-02, 5:08 PM #61
because you'll be a better person if you do.

Heh, thats awesome stuff there. Anyway its not an apprenticeship program. Its a friend of my teachers who may be willing to teach me stuff. Very different from an organized program. I mostly want to get good at carving stuff so I can put a large dragons head on the front of my boat that shoots smoke and fire out its nostrils. >__>

No, I think I absorbed through instruction the ability to make nice cabinets.

Such as the ones we have in the kitchen.

Uh Hur.

The most I could see Rob doing is assembling them from a kit.

Too much wood. Anyone here a metalworker?

I'm building my boat under the mentorship of a blacksmith, so hopefully I'll get to build a few of my own tools. Metal is scary though, too many high temperatures and such.
