Massassi.net Move is impending (FARMS R DOWN!!11?1)
2007-10-16, 2:06 PM #1
In an effort to get Massassi clear of MB's ever-enlarging gut, Massassi is moving! I'm sure most of you are already aware of this move after previous threads, but here's the rundown in case anyone missed it:

(To make this easier to understand, Sorrowind is the name of the "new server" and Massassi is the name of the "old server")

1. Sorrowind (my server) will be hosting Massassi from now on.
2. massassi.net will maintain its domain name, look and feel. Forums will be exactly as they are now.
3. All hosted sites (jkhub, woggle, tacc, etc) will still be hosted, nothing's changing there.
4. Files will remain!
5. Brian will be stepping down as owner, and I'll be taking his place. Apart from that, everyone's position as far as admin/mod is staying the same, although I might look for more admins later?
6. Brian's keeping the old soul closet, and I'll be establishing a new Web 3.0 closet to replace it. (It uses IFRAMES!) All souls contained in the old closet will be, and I quote, "fuel for my... other project".

Now, for the new information for those already "in the know".

The final transition will occur on Thursday, October 18th. As soon as Brian logs in and gives the okay, I will be temporarily disabling the forums here, as well as on jkhub (with help from Zeq).

As soon as that's done, I'll run a copy of all the data on the databases, and move them over to Sorrowind. As soon as that is complete, I will trigger the DNS update.

Once the DNS update is triggered, I will re-enable the forums both on Massassi and on Sorrowind. The old forums on Massassi will be turned on so that there will be a smooth transition while everyone's DNS updates. The old forums will connect to Sorrowind's MySQL server, so any posts/threads/edits/etc will happen on the new server only. This method should make for a barely noticeable switch between the old server and the new one.

I don't anticipate any serious issues in this move (I know the forums work, at least). However, seeing as the scripts on Massassi are very old, some things may be broken, and some URLs may be 404s. I'll need everyone's help to track those errors and 404s down so we can fix them after the move.

Again, this will happen on Thursday, October 18th (two days from writing). If anyone has questions, feel free to ask.

Ryan (TACC), and DSettahr, if you read this, please PM me so that we can discuss moving your stuff!

Oh, and of course, you can blame mb.

You are safe no more. Any time you end a sentence with a preposition I will personally see to it that you are banned for a random interval in time. :v:

Oh, and for anyone who's already hosted on my server, this move won't affect it whatsoever.

Question: what do our "farms" grow? :ninja:

I'm wondering if there's good story material to be had in this move...

You should rewrite the entire forums in flash & AJAX.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Uh, MB never owned the server, so I don't see how your post makes any sense whatsoever (just like every other post you make).

JG: RoR too? Maybe some crazy streaming video too! :neckbeard:

MBs fat *** has always been blamed on server downtimes. Geez you know that.
2007-10-16, 8:46 PM #20
#1. MB isnt actually fat. in fact he is rather slender.

#2. The servers were never anywhere near MB. they were across the country from him.

#3. They werent blamed on him before he joined.

#4. The joke can still continue because none of the paramaters have changed.

#5. Grow up.

i've never been a pizzaface. i've had pimples, even more than one at a time, but never so bad that it could be considered acne.

So what exactly is your server anyway, mb? Massassi as it is is rather beefy as far as bandwidth goes. How is yours?

I think you meant CM?

Anyway, the specs of the server:

AMD Athlon64 3500+
1GB RAM
160GB SATA
2000GB Bandwidth

On average, Massassi only uses between 100-200GB a month. Just a small portion of my allotted amount.

You realise that this means we're going to have to disband the don't touch the servers picture, right?

But, here's hoping it doesn't.

Nothing will go wrong with the forums, they already work! :(

As for the rest of the site, I'm 105% sure something will break. I'd be worried if something DIDN'T break.

Oh, and:
