No, not the end of semantics. The best army in the world means that it's better than any other current army in the world - and I still believe that to be true. Simply because we haven't wiped out the insurgency in the blink of an eye doesn't mean that the insurgency is a better army - in this case, it's simply because they don't have scruples.

OH **** me I see where this is going. Don't devolve this convo into yet another "moral relativity" speech. We've all heard it before, and those of us who decide to subscribe to it do, and the rest of us laugh and shake our heads.

Scruple-less armies are what's going to make the world end before I finish college.

An army exists as a tool to achieve goals--if the U.S. Army's goal is "take over Iraq and try not to kill any people who aren't trying to kill us" and the Insurgency's goal is "take over Iraq and kill whoever" that means the Insurgency's set itself a goal that's easier to reach. Not that they're a better army. If the U.S. military wasn't concerned with civilian casualties they could blow Iraq to hell.

correction: would have already blown iraq to hell.

Gorillas != army. They couldn't successfully attack or take any position. The situation in Iraq is unwinnable because we aren't fighting an army. We're fighting an unknown percentage of the civilian population. It's not a war, it a stupid attempt to enforce peace and justice in a society that is totally incompatible with our methods or ideals.

It possible for us to win of course, but like Machiavelli says, the only way would be to slaughter or sell a huge portion of their population into slavery.

Nope. It makes their objectives easier to accomplish.
