Who uses this audio player? It's incredibly powerful, more flexible than any other player on any other platform. Unfortunately, it's never been easy to create a useful, attractive UI. That has changed with the recent 0.9.5 betas. The new default UI makes it easy to arrange panels, almost like using a GUI designer, but much easier. The new Facets component makes browsing your library nice, too.

I ditched foobar2000 for WMP11 this past year because it was too annoying to use, but this new beta is fantastic. Now that I'm back I've realized how much I missed gapless playback, made even better with continuator, and more pleasant headphone listening.

Here's what my configuration looks like:

I really like the default foobar2k settings. As I understand I may be the only person in the world that feels this way.

No, Amarok is the opposite of foobar2000.

I used it for about 6 months, and was kind of satisfied. Three days ago I went back to Winamp 2.95, and I haven't looked back since.

I used to when I ran XP. Izzy did too. (she never really got the hang of winamp)

The new gui and functionality is better, but I considered the old one adequate for the tasks at hand and it was minimized to tray most of the time anyway.

I use it; thanks for the link!

I never could stand Foobar, and although this update helps it somewhat, it's still nowhere close to converting me from Winamp5.

Yeah, on Windows, I'm a Winamp junkie. I haven't used it in a while though, so I hope it hasn't become bloated to death.
On Linux, Amarok for the win. Are there any decent GTK clones of Amarok? I'm on an older laptop and like to keep my resources to a minimum, so I've just been using Rythmbox lately.

I tried Foobar in the past, but never saw a reason to switch from Winamp. Looks pretty nice though.

Amarok's database system is horrible. If you've got even a decent amount of songs, it lags to hell and back. Rhythmbox was far more responsive for me, and it's probably my favorite player in Linux now. Winamp is still king though. :D

I know for a fact that GoY uses Foobar! :P

I'm a winamp man myself.
nope.

I've never had to deal with too many songs. It's funny though, I've heard of this issue and at that point people recommend using mysql just to manage your music database. Seems rather ridiculous to me if you just want listen to music with a nice media library.

Yeah, it's like...

No. I will not run mysql server JUST to work with my music. Not to mention the pathetically stupid amount of steps required to get it to work (it's pretty much a glorified hack).

I'm thoroughly dumbfounded as to why iTunes runs like uber **** on any version of Windows.

Time to go scour the net for any iPod protocols for .NET.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Absolutely. It's fandabbydoozy on my powerbook but ran like a drunk dog with one leg on all of my old windows machines.

I've never had any problems with it.... :(

I use WMP11 pretty much just because of the controls in the task bar.
Do any of these other programs do that too?
Winamp is the only one of those mentiond that I've ever tried.

I use WMP11 just because i like it.
And i don't know if Foobar has Internet TV capacity.
2007-11-05, 9:56 AM #25
I use Winamp primarily. The new version (and default skin) is very nice, but at the expense of interface customization. :( Why shouldn't I be able to get my library on top of the player a la that foobar picture!?

Most of them don't because you don't NEED them.

For example, winamp has the "Global Hotkeys" feature which allows you to set a hotkey that controls winamp (start/stop/pause/back/forward/etc) from ANY program, even in a game. It's vastly superior to the taskbar-hogging WMP bar.

I never understood why you'd need that if you had controls for Play/Pause, Stop, Previous, and Next all built into your keyboard.

<.< Those all work for me fine for iTunes from anywhere.

What, all of five steps? While I agree that it is overkill for a music player, I would not say that it is difficult to set up.

Anyway, foobar2000 was my player of choice in Windows, but now I just use Amarok. I do miss foobar2000; it was a heck of a lot faster and had more useful features than Amarok.

Your music library is probably relatively small.

WINE handles foobar2000 fairly well, although some components don't work properly, e.g. Columns UI. That would be essential for a decent interface except that the default one in 0.9.5 is way better.

I thought about that, but it is not really worth the aggravation.

Just because it's KDE does not mean it is win, GBK. Far from it.

Just curious. Have you ever used Amarok?

iTunes, when it was first released for windows, a microsoft programmer said something to the effect of "it was the most neatly coded piece of software i had ever seen".

since then its just gotten crappier and crappier. i miss when it took 2 seconds for itunes to load up, instead of 45.

I'm trying not to be an iTunes fanboy since I realize not everyone loves it, or even cares for it.... but really... 45 seconds? I just timed mine and it took it 5 seconds.

What version are you running? It took roughly 20s to load. I'm running 7.4.3.1. iTunes scrolls at like 0.75 lines/s and my library isn't even that large! It's bloody tiny compared to most of you all.
