Okay I bought a new hard drive because the old one died because the power supply got covered in dust and kept restarting over and over until the hard drive was ruined but anyway I have the new hard drive and the holes are different.

Maybe you should have asked before buying STUPID HEAD.

Now you have to get a SATA controller or send the HD back :p

Edit: Actually, Thrawn, you should check and see if your mobo has SATA. There's a chance it already has an SATA port on it, you just weren't using it. It'll be much smaller (like 2cm) on the mobo, and they're usually in pairs.

The answer is on the motherboard. See the little "SATA1" label on the box around the port right next to the "SATA2" label?

:awesome:

Take that there and put it in here
2007-11-06, 2:45 PM #25
See if your PSU has a power plug on it already.

If not, check your boxes for your mobo and see if it has a molex -> sata power adapter (it's just a molex plug and a sata power plug on each end of a wire, that's it).

Hey. I hope you're not putting windows XP on that drive.

It's a MEGA pain in the ***.

Some things you need to do;

Make sure your sata controller is enabled in the bios
Make sure your boot order is set to boot from CD, then sata device
Find the drivers for your sata controller, and put them on a thumb drive or floppy disk if you have a floppy drive

The Windows XP installer doesn't have generic SATA drivers, you have to load them at a specific part of the install, I think you press F2 at the beginning. It says what you need to press on the bottom within the first 30 seconds or so of booting the install disk.

Usually you get to pick out of a list of between 4-6 different drivers despite loading what your manufacturer tells you to. This is a pain, because it won't tell you if you got the wrong driver, and will go ahead and try to install. Then tell you it can't and restart your computer. Then you have to ****ing start over. It takes like 10 minutes per try. It's REALLY ****ing annoying.

Odd, I have NEVER had to install any kind of SATA drivers on any one of my many many XP installs.
