I don't remember installing any special SATA drivers either.

It's RAID drivers that Windows will prompt for, not SATA. So it basically depends on how his motherboard handles the drive.

And also, it's F6 to load them. F2 loads the "Automated System Recovery" whatchamacallit.

Correct, and you can usually choose in the BIOS if it's configured for RAID or IDE on the SATA controller. If you choose IDE it will not require drivers.

Right now it is sitting on a stack of paper in a drawer in my desk. Not touching anything (except the paper)

Why not just already mount it in the case? You can put it in there and attach the cables later.
