I'm getting a computer!
2007-11-27, 12:03 PM #1
But I haven't payed attention to computer stuff in a long while, so I need your help. I need pretty much everything new, since my parents would still be keeping this computer. I'm looking to spend $1200-$1500 (is that a lot), and I'd like to be able to play any games coming out in the next few month with high detail...

K, go!
2007-11-27, 12:20 PM #2
I'm in the same market... its hard to build a WHOLE system on that budget that will be running DX10 (if you indeed want distant future gaming in high detail) However, if you already have basics (drives, case, power, screen, ect) you could get a pretty nice system for that.

Well, I do indeed need everything, but I guess I can increase my budget if I have to.
2007-11-27, 2:35 PM #5
What size monitor do you want?
2007-11-27, 2:43 PM #6
Well, I was thinking 19", but then I realize that if I got widescreen it'd need to be about 22".

20" and 22" typically have the same resolution (1680x1050). If you want 1920x1200, you'll probably need to go larger.

Get that instead. On par with the 8800GT or better and for less. Ahoy!

Also, the RAM deal was a monday-only thing, so go get it elsewhere (newegg), and for monitor I say 2207FPW :colbert: But seriously, not bad at all.

As for processor/mobo I'd say this then for the dvd burner just get one off newegg and for a good soundcard you can either rely on the mobo or get yourself a nice Audigy 2, something that runs well, or a cheap version of the xfi. Anything that outputs good sound you're gonna want.

Keyboard I'd say saitek, they have a nice wireless if you wanna drop big bucks. Mouse I'd say G7 if you got some extra cash and don't mind wireless, if you do g5 or mx518, both are good.

And it still outperforms the 8800GT.

What's your point?

Ahwell. Maybe I'll rebuild next spring.

I don't see a case in that list.

(Dude, 750w power supply? Good thing it's free... becuase that sounds like an excessive waste)
2007-11-28, 1:51 PM #19
I'm going to get a case locally, since shipping for them is $16.
2007-11-28, 1:54 PM #20
Oh sweet.

Just be sure it's the right size-spec.

Also, if it's a really cheap case odds are it's also a really cheaply made case. And for the love of gawd, don't spend $400 on something just for a plexiglass window of stupidity and a half dozen LED lights of lame.

Oh, and you might need some case fans, and I didn't look to see if that processor came with a fan/heatsink combo thinger.

I haven't built a computer since the AMD K6II, so I don't have much of an idea of how this crap works anymore.
2007-11-28, 1:56 PM #21
Ugh, I hate Windows and LEDs. I like this case though:

I hate anything that glows.

Computers already make enough noise and light without adding more lights. :/

Thats like the number one thing I hate about computers, I can't fall asleep with one running in the room.

Funny, I feel awkward if I'm falling asleep and mine ISN'T running. Just feels abnormal. =/

The Radeon 3850 is not on par with the 8800GT. It's far slower. In terms of price/performance they're about equal in ratio. 8800GT is also faster than the 3870 too.

Refer to anandtech for details.

It's a good deal, but it in no way, shape or form out performs the 8800GT.

****ing [h], I was wondering when they were gonna get another payoff. Reminds me of the fiasco that must not be named (at least if you don't want to get banned on their forums).

But yeah, it's not quite as good, but I'd say 180 vs 290 or so on average (if you can actually get that 207 deal, and they're in stock which is a big thing...8800GTs have dropped so drastically in stock it's not even funny) isn't a bad deal at all, for budget. If you're just feeling wasteful, get the 8800GTX.

What OS you planning on running? Just asking because you I dont see any money allocated for Vista or XP. Of course if your planning to run Linux, that explains it...

I already have Vista. Pretty much.

And I just got a PSU for 'free' so that'll shave $90 off my total.

There was a big scandal where they got paid to post certain scores a while back in the nv vs ati war iirc. If you even MENTION it on their forums you're banned, permanently.

It was pretty nasty.

Also, MSI has a higher rate of failure than Asus for motherboards. Asus usually uses better BIOS and higher quality equipment, but not always.

I'm not big on the conroe market yet (which is odd, I'm usually on top of that kind of ****) so I say go with whatever's clever.

I couldn't find anything about this on google. Are you sure this isn't one of those stupid things where netbeards sit back in forums and try to discredit every site in existence when their favorite brand doesn't wftpwn the competition?

No, I know it happened. I have a couple of friends who were a part of [h] when it happened. This was before you hit puberty, hell, before I hit puberty.

No...When the 6800 etc dropped sorta, but I've always been dedicated to the most bang:buck. When the 9*00 cards reigned I was "an ATI fanboy" thus the picture of me that Shintock made (if anyone wants they can post it). It's really, for me, down to whoever's best.

You'd think it would have at least showed on up Wikipedia, at least. Are you sure they didn't start throwing around accusations and then get banned? I notice a lot of the time, people think something's wrong and get banned for being total douches about it and then think that the ban confirms their theory.
