Favorite Xbox 360 games
2007-12-09, 9:26 PM #1
Post your favorite xbox 360 games, please! My son and I (well stepson) just bought an xbox 360. It came with marvel ultimate alliance (ok) and some racing game (lame). He wants to get Halo 3, and I'm interested in Gears of War and maybe Bioshock, but what about non-huge-mega-blockbuster games that I probably haven't heard of (because I never pay attention to xbox stuff)? Suggestions?

Gears is great. Online is action packed, the controls are tight and its light on story. Focuses on blowing stuff up which is great.

Call of Duty 4 is one of the best online experiences I've played in a long time on a console. The Singleplayer isn't LONG, but satisfying. Multiplayer mode has a RPG-ish element where you unlock accessories, abilities, weapons, etc as you gather experience by winning rounds, killing enemies etc. A few nights of play and you'll have some great unlocks.

Ace Combat 6 is a great arcade flight sim. Lots of action, fantastic controls and great graphics make this series stand out again on the 360. Worth a rent at least.

I really liked skate. - something different from Tony Hawk and has a great control scheme. Some of the missions are very unforgiving but the gameplay otherwise is great. Going online with some friends and just doing freeskate and finding spots to skate is cool.

Assassins Creed is a game you should at least rent. Solid action, and hopefully the start for a series of games. I found myself trying to rush through the main gameplay to get to the story 'behind the scenes'. Great voice acting and graphics.

I still haven't played Mass Effect but I really want to.

One of the best things you can do Brian is go onto the XBox Live Marketplace and download Demos for a lot of games that are out. A lot of newer titles don't have demos, but Bioshock, Skate, AceCombat6 and more are available for download.

I'm in the process of trying to get it connected to the internet. I didn't realize that it didn't have wireless built in (like the wii). They want almost a hundred dollars for a wireless adapter!!!!!! It's ridiculous. I can't run an ethernet cable, I wonder if I can make my Wii interface with the xbox so the xbox can use the wii's wireless :)

BTW, I read on the internet that there are more-recently-manufactured xboxes out there that have less heat problems and therefore don't have as many crashes and RROD problems, so when I bought mine, I kept an eye out for one with a 175W power supply, which, according to various sources on said internet, is the new "better" one. A lot of places sell the old ones and they are the same price... Old one is 205W or something, they print it on a sticker on the outside of the box.

Prey is kinda fun. All my other favorites are mega-huge blockbusters.

Viva Pinata and Beautiful Katamari. Even though they're a bit kiddy, I really enjoyed both.

LEGO STAR WARS II

Great for Co-Op with the kids.
That and Psychonauts (XBox I game).

(Portal - ie orange box)

If the racing game you are talking about is Forza 2, I disagree.. Of course I come from a car enthusiast and sport car class racing fan. It has the most realistic car physics period. I mean just the physics engine alone runs 250fps. And the ability to modify your car is hella fun by itself. . Of course, most people just like the NFS series :P

That and Halo3 are all I play.. I'm addicted to online.

angeredMALBOSIA

getting COD4 for xmas. I know that's a good game thouh.

God no. Ew. NEEDZ 4 RICE!

Well, I dont know of any real offshoot games considering I dont own a 360 unfortunately. (always been a PC guy anyway) I do play a ton of it at my friends house though and even if it is mainstream, Gears of War kicks some serious arse. Also I believe UT2007 (aka UT3) will be on the 360 soon, an well.. that series speaks for itself. <3

Also Rock Band, although also uber mainstream, is incredibly fun. If your a drummer you pretty much destroy the drum section though. Still extremely fun.

Worms, on X-Box Live. Get it, now.

Might as well get Lumines there while you're at it.

This too. I've not yet played online but I LOVE worms. (Apart from the new physics which means worms don't fly very far when you hit them/blow them up)

I played Halo 3 for 10 minutes before I gave up and went back to my other games.

I still down own a 360, but i think dead rising is one of the funnest games ever... mindless zombie killing is fun. Many flash games have proven this to be true.

Games I have that weren't mentioned:

-Fight Night Round 3. Awesome boxing game, lot of fun with friends (or you and your son)

-Tony Hawk's Project 8. I think there's a newer TH game out, not sure if it's better or worse. I liked this one a lot more than previous TH games because of the continuous environment, and general refinements to the control scheme. Haven't tried skate yet, but I hear it's pretty different.

-Rainbow Six: Vegas. If you liked previous R6 games, you probably wouldn't like this one. It's less "tactical", there's no planning before each map. That said, I found it a lot more enjoyable because of this.

-Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2. Great squad-based play, lot of fun. I haven't played it a whole lot because it took a back seat to other games.

I also have PGR3 and Kamino because they came with my system. PGR3 was fine, but I don't like racing games. Kamino is still in its shrink wrap.

Whoever suggested downloading a bunch of demos, I definitely agree. One of the best features of Live IMO.

Viva Pinata. That is ALL.

Overlord is hilarious. It's like a demented Pikmin. Definitely worth checking out.
2007-12-10, 10:51 AM #23
Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll definitely get CoD 4 at some point, probably need to play through 2 (which I have on my computer) and 3 (which I will probably get on xbox) first. Re: party games - hate 'em, want to puke every time someone comes over and wants to play raving rabbids on my wii (so I traded it in). Also "rhythm" games like ddr and guitar hero, I won't buy those for myself (kids can get them if they want). They're not fun, maybe because I'm horrible at them, but the whole idea is just "meh" to me.

I asked for Lego Star Wars Complete or something for my DS, so I probably won't also get it on the xbox. I'll check out Worms, Lumines, and the demos as soon as I get it networked. I may sign up for an account on an online game rental service, have you guys tried them?

Also, Z@NARDI, I really hate "realistic" driving games. They don't feel realistic to me - I can drive my car > 100mph and never go off the road. I can feel when I'm going too fast and when I'm about to go out of the lane. I can do the same at 120mph on my bike. But on every racing game ever, I have a hard time keeping the car on the road in the corners. I like "arcade" style racing games like Cruisin', Rush, and Excite Truck.

Mass Effect is pretty awesome, if you enjoy RPGs.

Kights of the Old Republic - Lightsabers + Gears of War shooting = Mass Effect

I see, I mean what can I say? I have no issues keeping my car on the road. I know how to brake going into a corner. You can't just slam the brakes turn the wheel and hope the car turns.. you know what happens? under steer and off the track you go. You would probably like nfs pro street. I've played it, it's got some cool stuff, more along the lines of the handling you would prefer

Isn't viva pinata a kids tv show or something?
2007-12-10, 1:19 PM #30
yeah I think its young kids related.. I never got into it

if you dont have the orange box on pc then I would consider getting it for xbox.. the demo seemed to flow well with the controller even though the demo was worthless.

yeah the oranghe box demo on the 360 was the worst demo ever... pick the boring *** beginning of the game and cut it off before we get any weapons

I dont have a 360, but form what ive seen and played its like this

1 Assasns Creed
2 BioShock
3 Call Of Duty 4
4 Halo 3
5 Gears Of War
" I am the Lizard King, I can do anyhthing... "
2007-12-10, 4:45 PM #33
For me, I'd have to say...

Mass Effect I enjoyed IMMENSELY
Gears of War
Guitar hero 3
GRAW
I'll say Bioshock as well, even if I didn't play it on 360 (only PC)
Orange Box of course gets you lot of bang for your buck

Not sure what to think of Assassin's Creed. Saw it on friend's PS3 and it looked slightly repetitive in terms of how to perform kills and such.

of my games:

1. Call of Duty
2. Gears of War

I also have Halo 3, Assassin's Creed, and Rainbow Six: Vegas, but none of these games are in the same tier as #1/2. They are good games but not must haves. If you are on a tight budget I'd say skip these. I plan on getting Mass Effect after my exams and I'm pretty sure that will be my new #1. Seems like it's right up my alley.

Mass Effect i HATED because ut was too muched based on RPG style, which i hate. I expected it, but not NEARLY as much as it was.

Not to mention it's difficult to play when you can't read.

When games have both home console and portable ports, I avoid the portable ones. The home console ones are simply going to be better because of the better hardware they run on.
