I just watched the latest episode of Naruto Shippuden, and it pissed me off, as Naruto has been lately. I watched Naruto way before it was popular here, and it was good. The fight scenes were really thrilling, the story wasn't bad, and character development was certainly above average. Now it feels like it's being dragged on more than DBZ ever did.

The latest episode was filled with the least dialog ever in the series. Involving Naruto being a pissed off retard and powering up beyond what he can control. Oooo! Real creative. Oh, sorry, now have a character explain it to me, because I couldn't figure it out on my own based on the hundreds of obvious flashbacks of foreshadowing you filled your time-slot with.

I'm probably going to stop watching it soon. I stopped when they did at least a year and a half of filler episodes, so they wouldn't catch up to the manga. Those episodes sucked so badly. I started watching again when they followed the manga again, but now it's stretched out so much it hurts to watch.

Oh yeah, Greenboy, don't even get me started on Narutards...

I'd rather watch DBZ. No, really, DBZ was awesome when I was a kid.

Should that be read as, "I love things that are obscure, but hate them when they become popular"?

Unless it somehow became a completely different show in the translation, Naruto has always sucked.

I didn't mean for it to sound that way, but rather, as the show started sucking in Japan, it came out in the US. Plus, the show gained a lot of idiot following at that point. It is very evident at Anime conventions when one out of two people is sporting a "ninja" headband or some Bleach hat. Also, the Cartoon Network version is censored for the stupidest things. Blood, nosebleeds, etc.

Oh, and I agree about DBZ. I'm actually watching it right now between posts. On Episode 76 right now.

The only Animes that I've watched are Full Metal Alchemist and Inu Yasha. I enjoyed them for awhile. Inu Yasha's cartoon series ended before the manga series did so it was just cut off (unless they just stopped translating episodes). Full Metal Alchemist just seemed like it dragged on and on forever (come to think of it, so did Inu Yasha). I watched most of the episodes when it was on Adult Swim regularly and I think I got to the end of the series, but I'm not sure about it.

Those are the only Anime's I enjoyed.

I love Full Metal Alchemist. 52 episodes and a movie of awesome. I never got the feeling that it was dragging on. There are very few episodes I dislike, and I love how even the filler episodes have at least a little bit of important story or character development. Very few shows are able to get me as attached to the characters as FMA has. It's the next series I plan to buy, once they finally release it in bigger sets.

Inu Yasha has maybe 10 good episodes out of 100+ episodes of fail. It doesn't even end! They just wrap it up with a "we'll keep fighting, and we'll win!" message. Terrible.

Currently, I own Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, Tenchi Muyo, Excel Saga, and a few seasons of DB/DBZ.

Agreed, except I still like the story. The manga is still excellent, but Shippuuden...they changed the animation, they changed the voices, and it's just generally not the same Naruto. It's not as FUN as Naruto was.

Wow, you're the last person I expected to be some crazy anime nerd. Naruto used to be awesome, the first 160 or so episodes, before the filler. It was fun to watch, exciting to wait for, there was all kinds of awesome battle scenes and funny **** happening all the time.

Now it's just a snoozefest.

I ****ing hated Akira. I wanted the last few hours of my life back after sitting through it.

All I've watched is...

-Ghost in the Shell (it was ok)
-Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (both seasons, lurve)
-Fruits Basket (my girlfriend insisted, and despite it being sickeningly cutsey in places, it wasn't half bad either)
-Outlaw Star (my girlfriend insisted, it actually turned out to be pretty good)
-Cowboy Beepop (it was awesome, lurve, I just didn't feel the ending was that great, kinda fell flat for me)
-Death Note (awesome, lurve, thought the last half was a bit rushed though)
-Blood+ (just finished it, awesome, lurved it, wished the ending was a little more drawn out)
-Appleseed (lurve)
-Ergo Proxy (I've only sat through the first episode so far, it hasn't hooked me yet)

And that's more or less in order.

Honestly, by that list I'm surprised you hated Akira. It was a rather deep and moving anime. Also, check out Samurai Champloo--if you like Bebop and OLS then you should like the Champloo.

Also: Excel Saga is win.

Akira wasn't deep or moving. It was boring as hell, confusing as hell, and frankly I found even Evangelion's ending to be more satisfying than it.

A couple nice animes not mentioned yet:

SPIRAL - If you like Sherlock Holmes/detective stories in general, you'll love this. Brilliant ideas for crimes, and brilliant ways to solve them. And it's surprisingly fast paced as it moves forward.

Code Geass - Very interesting idea for a show, you really have to pay attention to get the plot but it's solid. The ending I don't think you'll ever see coming.

Ergo Proxy - You have to watch this one really really carefully to get what the hell is going on. But goddamn it's awesome, and the production values are through the roof. This is my favorite anime I've ever seen.

I found it to be both--though admittedly it took a LOT of insight into the story to figure out what exactly was going on (took me about 20 watchings to totally get it, and if I told you what state I was in when I figured it out you'd probably just laugh).

I never watched Evangelion...never got into it I guess.

But the ending was great for Akira, albeit a bit obscure definitely.

I actually enjoy Naruto. The filler was boring and some of the new eps are rough - but the worse offender is the english dubbing. I cannot watch the North America/Cartoon Network version of the show because of the "BELIEVE IT" which just frustrates me to no end.

I'm so glad I could d/l the japanese dub through Xboxlive marketplace for the 360 Naruto game.
2007-12-29, 9:35 AM #33
Also...

<Insert random plugging of Black Lagoon> Black Lagoon is the one dub I will actually REFUSE to watch, which is odd since I usually don't have a problem with them. Honestly, Revy's occasional long Engrish dialogue is worth it anyway.

75% of Akira's lines seemed to consist of "TETSUO!" or "KANEDA!", very annoying...much like Inuyasha. You don't actually notice it at first, but when you do you start wondering how you missed it.

Blood+ was "okay"...would have been better if it didn't stray so far from Blood: The Last Vampire so much... One thing that infuriates me so much about Blood+ is that they just HAD to have a magic sword (That only the "hero" can use to it's intended effect) analogue, and the creation of such a thing had the side effect of partially screwing up everything else (Notice how none of the Chiroptera in B:LV ever turned into statues). Whoever designed the weapons of Blood+ should be beaten.

The new Gundam series, Gundam 00, is actually pretty good. Seemingly much better than the travesty that was the CE universe and not as much like Wing as some were whining about at Episode 1. In UC phrasing, it's probably about like giving 0079/OYW era Gundams, which were already close to indestructible with conventional weapons, V era tech.

The new Gundam Series has promise. At first, they seemed to be forcing a lot of the drama, but now it's starting to fall together. Am I one of the only ones that really liked Gundam Seed? :( (Not really anything else Cosmic Era)

My list of anime and a few manga series I've watched/read the whole way through. Unless they are continuations.

Akira - Great, but I want to read the manga.
Azumanga Daioh - Good cute stuff. I want to read the manga.
Berserk - D:... Great series. I love the engrish theme songs.
Claymore - Really good series. Great action and character development, but the story feels like it ends abruptly.
Cowboy Bebop - I loved the series, and the last two episodes are so emotional. It chokes me up every time.
Death Note - Have only read the manga, which is superb.
DBZ - Awesome for Saiyen Saga and Frieza. (you know it is)
Elfen Lied - Really emotional series with some very violent and awesome fight scenes. Very good.
Excel Saga - Awesomesauce.
FLCL - Love it. Have to watch it a few times though.
Full Metal Alchemist - Really great series.
Full Metal Panic - AMAZING mix of humor, drama, and action! The characters in this series are really amazing.
Full Metal Panic?: Fumoffu - AMAZING mix of humor and action! Mostly humor.
Full Metal Panic!: Second Raid - AMAZING mix of humor, drama, and action! Mostly drama and action.
Fruits Basket - Was recommended to me by one of my guy friends. First few episodes I laughed at how girly it was. Next few, I was pissed at how girly and predictable the story was. The last episodes I was practically calling things as they happened. Cute, but lame.
Gundam Wing - Great, but it's been a long time. I Need to watch it again.
Gundam Seed - I thought it was really great. The plot was amazing, and the drama in the series was really powerful.
Gundam Seed Destiny - Crap. Tried forcing a ton of drama, dumbed down characters, and lame subplots. It does wrap up the overall Seed storyline well, though.
Gundam 00 - Shaping up pretty well. Seems to really reflect current world issues.
Highschool of the Dead - Funny high-school zombie manga from a scanlation group.
Naruto - Read above post.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Really awesome; such a mind****. To wrap the action up a little more, you should watch The End of Evangelion movie.
Love Hina - Hilarious. Fun love story, but I've heard that the manga is far better.
Paranoia Agent - Really great series that is very reflective on society and uses a lot of imagery and metaphor.
REC - Reading the manga from a scanlation group. It's awesome.
Rurouni Kenshin - A great series, but the third story arch in the anime was really boring. The whole series apparently deviates from the manga a lot, which I would like to read.
Samurai Champloo - I loved the character development, but I wish it had a stronger plot and ending. Still really amazing series.
Samurai X: Trust, Betrayal, and Reflection - INCREDIBLE! You can watch the first two without even knowing the Kenshin series, but the third one includes all the characters. again, unbelievably powerful OVA.
Trigun - Great classic series that everyone has seen.
Tenchi Muyo: Ryo-ohki - Hilarious and great story. The third OVA wraps up the overall story but feels incredibly rushed.

I've more than likely missed some, and there are plenty of anime series I've checked out but never got into.

I'm watching Fate-Stay Night right now. So far it's really awesome!

If I'm recalling the article on Wikipedia right, Blood+ was similar to Stand Alone Complex. Same universe, slightly different rules and events. Thus the Chiroptera turning to stone when Saya's blood is mixed with their own.

That leads to the next point, the sword wasn't magical. It wasn't what killed Chiroptera. Saya's blood was killed them. Her sword was more or less just a special delivery system, what with all the blood grooves leading out to the cutting edge of the sword. Saya could've used ANYTHING to kill them, so long as it had her blood on it, which she even did in one episode (she used a kitchen knife because she couldn't find her sword).

I know that, my point is that it's serving the same purpose in story that any magic weapon that is the only way to defeat a certain enemy and can only be properly wielded by the "hero" would. If you remember in the movie the only thing required to down a Chiroptera was sufficient blood loss, something that seems to have been forgotten in the series except when Saya isn't available...it also seems that they've become literally bulletproof except when somebody important is doing the shooting (Kai, and you'd think having their entire chest explode outward would qualify as sufficient blood loss).

I also fail to see how the SAS managed to waltz into a the trap of a giant batorilla instead of the other way around... Even Hellsing and it's unholy indestructable ubervamp gives it's redshirts more credit than this.

I'll jump in with a list of the more notable animes I've seen and some of my comments on them, but I'm by no means an expert on the subject.

Cowboy Bebop - Love this. The finale always gets to me, especially since at the time I first watched it I wasn't used to...'sad' endings.
Outlaw Star - Probably the first anime I ever properly watched. Quite good, but it seems to strike me as a bit cheesy nowadays.
.hack//Sign - Possibly the most weirdly named anime I've seen, it was based around a really neat concept. It was also rather open to interpretation for the most part, which I found interesting to discuss with others (I even made a thread about it on here once).
Trigun - Another good 'un. Really good sense of humour, but I think it might have gone a bit over the top during the final battle. Some parts suggested it was going that way, while others were more grounded in reality, which is why I found it a bit off.
Ninja Scroll - surprisingly bloody :P
Samurai Champloo - Another with a good sense of humour (especially the baseball game), although I was certain it was going with the same sort of 'sad' ending as Cowboy Bebop about an episode or two before the end. I was left not knowing what to think when it didn't, but it was still quite climactic.
Gungrave - Haven't seen all of this yet, I'm on about the fourth DVD volume, but it's been quite decent up to this point. The way the story unfolds (in flashback) also makes for some interesting contrasts in personality.

For more "film" type animes, I absolutely adored Spirited Away. The whole environment was just so rich and explored. No Face creeped the Hell out of me, though.

I also enjoyed Blue Sub 6, but it's been a long time since I've seen that.

I mentioned in the other thread that a flatmate bought me Nausicaa. I haven't watched that yet, because she wanted us to watch it together. I think she bought it more for her than myself, but we'll see how good it is.

Ah, I forgot about some of those, like Paranoia Agent. I really loved how weird that show got as it progressed. My favorite episode was the suicide group that kept failing to kill themselves. It was very upbeat and cheery for its subject matter.

Another no one has mentioned yet is Witch Hunter Robin. I've seen the whole series on sale for $40 at Best Buy. I should pick that up sometime. I know CM loved this show.

Azumanga Daioh is pretty cool too, in a slightly surreal kind of way.
