I wasn't terribly impressed.

Then you likey have no pulse, either.

I refuse to believe a living being could fail to be impressed by that.

I remember back when Games had demos and movies had trailers....

That's because noone wants to see a trailer of a pixle chasing another pixel, but we all want to see a trailer of a guy shooting up monsters...or something.

Games are becoming more cinematic, if you hadn't noticed.

Maybe I should elaborate - the cinematic part looked VERY cool, but the action at the end was not impressive, and left me looking for something more...
2004-07-31, 7:18 AM #9
If I wanted Cinematic, I'd go the the Cinema. Games are becoming too much like movies, and movies are becoming too much like games.

That's because games are getting more and more plot and movies are getting less and less plot.

You still get as much if not MORE gameplay then older games, so hush puppy.

Call me old fashioned but I'd rather hack and slash than sit through 5 hours of cinematics. I enjoy in game plot development much more than cinematics.

You know, you summed up perfectly how I felt about the last trailer.

And I really am getting tired now of people telling me I suck and must be dead simply becuase I don't like a game.

Why the hell is Doom3 $54.99?! That's a rediculous price. Is it me or are they playing everyone like a sucker because they know people want the game so much they are willing to pay the extra $$$? I'm waiting until it's cheaper to buy it...but that's just me. I don't NEED the game like many people seem to think they NEED it.

Looks OK, just not the kind of game I like. Hence the lack of impressedness here too.

I saw the trailer and played the beta. It certainly isn't worth more than $20.
2004-07-31, 8:17 AM #17
Please, that alpha was horrid. It was a rough build up for E3 in 2002 I believe. There is nothing finished about it, and you cannot draw any conclusions from it.

And to all of you that want something, more, I dont know what you are talking about. In interviews with the creators, ie, Carmack, he said that the focus of the game was to make a classic first person action shooter, so it wont be a whole lot different than most. Except for the fact that it is going to be damn scary, which they just didn't show in the trailers.

Also I get the feeling that not many of you are fans of the original Doom games, because any fan of the original is most likely salivating 24/7 about now.

I hated Doom, it was just boring and unfun. "BUT OMG WITHOUT DOOM YOU WOULDN'T HAVE HALF TEH GAMEZ WE HAVE TODAY AND OMG FPS CARMACK LOLZ HUMP!" It just wasn't a good game. Rise of the Triads on the other hand....

Well then I think we already knew this, but you've got issues [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

When did you play it? Back in the day, or just recently, because comparable to todays games, it is boring.

Wanna bet? It showed the direction the game was taking and the trailer doesn't help it either. The game is highly overrated.
2004-07-31, 8:48 AM #25
Wow do you hear youself. If I remember, the alpha was version .02. You wanna draw a conclusion from .02, might have been .2, you go right ahead, but there is so much more now, watch one of the interviews with the developers, they say exactly what I am. That alpha was crap, it wasnt even part of the game, and anyone fan that figures they dont like the game from somehting like that is not a fan. Apparently you were not anyway.

I hear myself. And I'll still be hearing the same thing when the game comes out. I played the beta, and saw the trailer. Doom3 simply does not look to be as good as people think. I think it's overrated.

Edit - BTW, I'd appreciate it if you didn't make random assumptions.

Daikatana was a good game. Much better than Doom. I hope they make a sequel.
2004-07-31, 9:09 AM #29
I never really played much of the old Doom games, so what I'm saying here might be totally invalid, but some of the monsters looked kindof corny to me. Like the flying skulls... :\

But like I said, I never played much of the earlier games so if things like that are an attempt to keep it "oldschool," disregard this, because I'm a true believer in keeping things as they always were.

Doom passed me by (I had a 286 back in the day), but I did play muchmuch Doom II later, which was so very much fun (Barrel of fun anyone? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]). I especially loved the fact that you could pick up the chainsaw before anything else...

I own Doom, Doom II, and the Master levels (which I barely ever played) and would love to be able to get my laptop to run Doom III, but I very much doubt it would ever work.

It's a 2.4GhZ Celeron, 194MB RAM, built in vid card.

Well, I can dream I suppose, it's probably better than the nightmares I'd end up with from playing doom III!

that pulse gun looks cool... (whatever it is with the blue bolts...) Rest of the game looks, meh...

The thing is, when we first started seeing screens, what, about a year ago? it looked incredible.. Now it just looks like any other game out there from one of the big, good companies.

I am going to distance myself from the debate here, but I wanted to comment ont he price.

That's how much long-awaited games from big-name companies cost. It's called "making money". I think Warcraft 3 also cost $54 when it came out. Good games cost anywhere from $30 to $60, and i think I even once bought a game that cost $64, though I can't remember what it was. It's a whole friggin' lot of money, but it should be worth it. PC Gamer said it was good, anyway, and I'm a fan, so here's hoping...

The last 55$ game I saw was Flight Sim 2004, but that came in an aluminum case. So that made that price seem a little more justified. I guess I really dont have a problem with Doom being 55$. It is going to sell, and id knows that. Plus I bought a pre-order box from best buy, so the game is now only 45$ when I show my receipt, so technically its kinda like I got a poster, and a cute little Mancubus pewter figurine for free.
