Do you floss?
2008-01-07, 10:55 PM #1
I went to the dentist today, and as always they handed me a complementary pack of dental floss to last me up until my next appointment in six months. I never floss, and I was wondering if anyone actually uses the stuff.
2008-01-07, 11:00 PM #2
I sure do....right before I have a dentist appointment. Also if I've just eaten ribs, corn, or anything else that tends to get stuck.

I can never remember to. Supposed to according to the dentist though.

I try to, but most of the time I'm brushing is when I'm right about to leave the house, and I always tell myself I'll leave flossing for another time.

Aye. Frequently.

While waiting to get to the dentist, I was reading some stuff on the walls in the facility and those instructions said at least every other day or never later than the third day for it would be too late after that.

But I gotta say in the evening of a day when you have eaten candies or other such ****, you really see the effect.

I floss a lot more since I started using an electric flosser. Still not as much as I should though.

I generally floss twice a day. At the very least, I floss before I go to bed.

Try the floss picks. I was the same way, till I got the little toothpicks with floss on the end. No hands needed in mouth:D

I have really sensitive gums, and flossing feels like hell. I'll use a toothpick or something if there's something obtrusive.

Every day.

If your gums bleed from flossing...well, that just means that you need to keep doing it at least once per day. Your gums will eventually toughen up (in a good way) and you'll stop nearly bleeding out from the mouth.

It helps if you make it part of your routine. Get up, shower, brush, floss, dress, shave, get lunch, go to work.

Quote:
If you do not floss and allow plaque to remain in between teeth it eventually hardens into a substance known as tartar. Unlike plaque which can be easily removed by brushing, tartar can only be removed by your dentist.

Over time, levels of more dangerous types of bacteria build up within tartar. Mean and vengeful, these bacteria produce toxins which irritate and inflame the gums. This condition is known as gingivitis. If gingivitis is left untreated it can progress to periodontal disease - a condition where bacteria and their toxins invade not only the gums but also the bones and the structures supporting the teeth. This can lead to bone loss, loose teeth, and teeth which fall out.

If you floss every day for a week or two, the bleeding will stop happening. You can be gentle, you don't have to use a lot of force. (assuming you don't already have gum disease, and if you do, go to a dentist right away)

I probably should.

:psyduck:

EDIT: Back when I still went to the dentist they never made a big thing about it. And neither did my parents. Eh.

Some people don't build up as much plaque as others... My dentist says it's because of different types of saliva (???). Maybe you're just lucky.

Floss ---> LISTERINE ---> Brush Teeth

I like listerine and how it burns.

yeah, me too. I think I manage to make time a couple of times a week. I should get more of those plastic pick things as they're a lot easier to use, especially with my labret piercing.

Floss first. Then brush away all the crap that comes out. Duh.

I go: brush away most of the crap, floss the rest out, then use mouth rinse to wash it all away

I've never had a root canal, and I hope I never have to, either. And I've only had 2 cavities. I had a cavity in my baby teeth, and I had one in my adult teeth.
