HOLD 70 WEAPONS AT ONCE!!!

I'm worried. This doesn't look like Metal Gear in any way shape or form.

Hopefully that's just a tech demo, and you don't actually hold that many weapons. But yes, it doesn't seem like MGS at all. And why is he hunched over like that all the time? Is he that old? The alert sound seems really out of place, since you're not sneaking, and they more or less know you're there.

I like how he pulls out a RPG from his spandex. I wonder if you can go through the whole game as a FPS, that would kinda be...lame.

You are supposted to be able to do the whole thing in FP mode. That is totally lame and not MGS at all, this game in general dosen not look MGS at all, and it worries me a hell of a lot.

You guys...

You have the OPTION to move while in first person mode, so yes, you could conceivably play the whole game that way, but you don't have to.

I'm sure you can't hold 70 weapons at once.

He's bent over because he's keeping low because he's in a freaking battlefield.

This is a third person shooter from the looks of it. I'm sure it'll have some stealth parts, regardless.

Not that that's a bad thing. I think it'll be ****tons of fun. It just won't be MGS. Maybe if they labelled it as a Gray Fox Prequel in Outer Heaven or something I'd be happy. But not MGS.

What Katt said.

Also I don't see whats so un MGS. Also, you were able to play the game in all-first person in Subsistance.
nope.
2008-01-09, 3:35 PM #14
Reminds me of Splinter Cell. Particularly the Korea missions from Chaos Theory. Only daylight. And in a Call of Dutyish setting. And with a ****ton more weapons.

*shrug*

It looks cool, it looks good, but I'm not overcome with any "Oh my god I MUST HAVE IT" desire. I'd play it if it was given to me, but I don't think I'd rush out and buy it. Even if I did have a PS3. On the other hand though.... Maybe I would out of desperation for something to play. =P

Ok, I'll just point out the blatantly obvious.

He's fighting enemies willingly as opposed to trying to circumvent them. There's an active war going on, and he's partaking in it. Not stealthing and trying to avoid people.

And a minor *****ing, he's fighting with people. Snake has always been in these things on his own, or at least had to fend for himself because the other people split up.

I don't know, the second one is more of a minor-*****ing....but even so, it just doesn't look MGS. I can't put my finger on it.
I had a blog. It sucked.

Only in the first video...

And theres been parts of games before where Snake has shot the place up. Look at the fight in the cooridoor with the guards in the tanker in GMS2.
nope.

Oh WTF.. didn't they realize the majority HATED the modified control scheme of MGS: PO? It looks way too similar to Splinter Cell/Random FPS.

I think it'll be one of those games where you can choose, but I'm not positive on that.

Also, it's most assuredly got nothing to do with Gray Fox? This is 2018 or sometime after MGS2 and Gray Fox is dead.

Thief simultaineously created and mastered the sneaker genre in one stroke.

The Splinter Cell series is technically superior because it is newer, however.

I still like MGS though.

The comment about not having games was teasing. The rest of it is honestly how I feel. I'm not flamebaiting. I'm not raining on the party. I'm just stating what it looks like to me. I didn't say "MGS SUX LAWLZ". I said it reminded me of Splinter Cell, which isn't far fetched at all, considering the games have a few things in common. Not MANY, but they do have things in common. I also stated the setting reminded me of Call of Duty. Basically nothing really stood out to me. If you've seen one blown up war torn desert city, you've seen most of them. Especially when it comes to video games. I didn't say the game wasn't impressive, I said it looked good, and like it'd be fun, but that it wasn't something I'd been keen to rush out and pick up.

Now if you think that's all flamebaiting, you need to learn what opinions are.

Like someone said previously, the game is giving you options of how to play the game. You can either go stealth or all out shooting. Maybe you can do a combination of them both. I really like having options instead of having ridiculous "uh oh I'm sighted automatic-restart level" games. Do realize that you can approach "stealth" a new way. When sneaking past a battlefield, maybe you can silently take down enemies to improve the odds for the other side. This will create a diversion allowing you to sneak through the battlefield easier.

See how Kojima is trying to bring innovation to the MGS series? I remember how back when MGS3 came out, even people complained the game didn't feel like MGS because you sneak around in a jungle.

Phoenix, the way you word that statement is what making Dj Yoshi say you're flamebaiting. You're making it sound out there is nothing worth playing on the PS3.

Hey, the camera isn't pointed directly at the ground in this one!

I only played the 2nd MGS game though. And it does look cool. But Snake looks to to be lugging that much firepower.

And the emote at the end wasn't enough to show otherwise? The entire explanation wasn't enough to show otherwise? Some people need to stop being fanbois and learn to freaking relax.

Does MGS4 have to sell a over million to break even? I wouldn't be surprised if they ported this to 360.

interesting weapon selection... RPGs and i know i saw mosin-nagant in there... yeah those are nice and stealthy

To be honest, I really really doubt it. After all the other MGS' that Kojima dropped, I'm sure there was enough development funds built up for MGS4.

And I think someone on the comments mentioned that it's PS3 only.

I liked MGS on the PSX but haven't played any of the others. I liked the simple, unrealistic setting of MGS and this looks a little bit too 'hardcore' if you know what I mean...

But I don't have a PS3, so my opinion counts for donkeybollock on the matter anyway :v:

The "needing to sell over one million" was revealed to be a mistranslation. As for porting over to the 360, Kojima has kept on saying it won't happen. However, maybe in 12-14 months there might be some "substance" version that will be released too.

I do wonder how much this game is costing them to produce. They're filming something in hollywood (live action) for an opening.
2008-01-11, 4:39 AM #38
Looks awesome, especially the camoflage suit. Pity I probably won't get to play it for a very long time. I wouldn't buy a PS3 just for this, and I haven't really paid attention to the console scene enough to know of many other games that would make the purchase more worthwhile.

I think the fact that Snake is lugging around a Mosin Nagant is pretty evident that it's some kind of tech demo, or an unlockable of some kind. I really don't think in the retail version you'll start with three different machine guns, etc. The only part that looked like a third person shooter was the first video, and the only thing there that hints that it may be a bit more compulsory to shoot through it is that Snake was interacting with soldiers on one side of the battle. There are action scenes all the MGS games, though, so I doubt MGS4 is breaking the mould too much.

No it wasn't.

They need to sell a million copies in launch week so, statistically and historically speaking, the game will turn a profit. Game publishers have pretty good numbers on sales curves: they know when sales will taper off, and what they can do to affect the curve.

They actually need to sell many more than 1 million copies. 1 million is just for the first week. If they can't make that then game industry data and sales charts show that the game isn't going to turn a profit. This is, of course, assuming that Konami isn't willing to let MGS4 consume in entirety all of the profit the previous games in the series has made and call it "even."

Companies tend to backpedal when statements they make for Japanese investors get translated because Japanese and American investors are two different beasts. Japanese investors tend to understand that their investments pay off more over the long term, so they appreciate hearing the reasons for it and what needs to happen first. American investors tend to buy low and drop a stock as soon as there is a chance for a downturn. This is a major part of the reason you will never hear an American corporation say anything other than "WE ARE LIKE UNTO GOD."

What this means for Konami is that MGS4 definitely will end up getting ported to 360, regardless of Hideo Kojima's retarded attitude about baka gaijin consoles. North America is the primary market for Metal Gear Solid and the PS3 install base just isn't here. Ultimately MGS4 is a generic stealth/shooter which means it will fit in much better on the 360 anyway. Expect the full gameplay experience on one disc, slightly longer load times and maybe lower-resolution FMVs.
2008-01-11, 10:01 AM #40
I still reckon it won't happen until its substance/subsistance redux.
nope.
