It is certainly an engineering marvel, and does have some interesting features, like the touch pad stuff, but if you plan on AT ALL using it as a desktop, epic fail :(

No optical drive, 1 USB port, don't know about that. God forbid you want to play a DVD when you are on an airplane and you are screwed.

Adding the SSD drive makes it 3100 bucks hhaha

Not to mention a lack of hard drive space, and no built in optical drive. I like Apple just fine, but this seems like a hit and miss. It's pretty though...

Expensive toy. For the money, I'd much, *much* rather have a Thinkpad X series. Slightly thinker, granted, but it weighs the same and is almost half the price. I've bought a few X61s for my sales guys, and they are *very* nice units. Hell, I'd give up on my old Latitude c400 for an X61.
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

Just think about how cheap it would be to make these. Very little in the way of materials, Core 2 LV, almost no connectors or mechanical parts at all, small hard drives (because I'm sure apple doesn't already get a discount on those). They didn't even put the multitouch panel in the screen where it might be worthwhile, probably using the exact same digitizer they use on the iPhone.

Mac is **** to begin with. The only thing they did right was the ipod. I have a "Zune" Its pretty ok. MAc still sux for the most part. Then again, vista sucks big balls too. In the end its too much money for something that will explode if you blow on it.

I've actually been thinking about getting a MacBook and liked the idea of the ultra-portable rumors. This is not at all what I had in mind, though.

It looks nice, but the lack of upgradeable RAM and non-standard optical drive is kind of a turn off for me.

With an education discount, the MBA + SuperDrive is the same price as the base 15" MBP, which seems far more worth the money in my opinion.

Now, if the SSD was included in the base price, that might make a difference. . .
2008-01-15, 2:30 PM #27
It has about a $100 - $200 higher price than Dell's small laptop. But Dell's smaller laptop is also only a 1.2GHz, as opposed to the MacBook's 1.6GHz. Dell's also doesn't have a webcam. Its a capable device and its price is what I thought. I won't be buying one, I still like my MBP. :)

On another note :awesome: :

I've been wanting a notebook without an optical drive for a very long time. I could easily count the number of times I've used the one in mine on both hands (and probably 7 of those would be to watch DVDs). If it takes up space and I never use it, I'd rather just not have it.

I think apple are on the right track here in regards to size, I know a lot of people who's first complaint about their laptop is its size and they already have reasonably small laptops to start with.

Being on the right track and having the finished article are two totally different things. I personally wouldn't be worried about its toughness, it is an aluminum shell as the MBP is, so it will probably be a lot stiffer and more durable than it looks.

Price though is over the top, for what they are charging it really needs the flash hd as standard. If that was the case, it'd be a good sell. I am remembering here though that flash hd's of that size are around $1000 or so to buy by themselves anyway...so maybe it isn't that bad in the grand scheme of apple pricing....

And I personally don't give a damn that it doesn't have a disc drive, hardly use mine as it is. 1 USB port...uumm, well, I'm only using one at the moment for another mouse, I have a NAS hooked upto my network where I store all my music, video's etc. Also, you gotta think what market this is aimed at, it is clearly not a desktop replacement, it's a light, highly portable laptop for people to use when on conference or moving around places, you shouldn't be storing large files on it or have to plug in more than 1 or 2 usb things, an external drive here and there maybe.

I like it, but beens I've only got a 1 year old MBP I would never buy one and personally I find the MBP portable enough.

Really? I guess I don't really know much about the ultra-portable laptop market. Always thought having atleast the option of a CD-ROM drive is a must for computers-on-the-go. Still, I don't think having just 1 USB port is a good idea. Unless you get a USB Hub, but still...

It was a loooong time ago. Like, original powerbook days. They did it with the floppy drive iirc.

With flash drives, optical drives aren't as necessary anymore, especially if all the software you want is preloaded and can be updated with online updates.

I like the remote disc option the MBA has too - why waste $99 on an external drive when most likely you have a desktop already?

Until you want to watch a DVD or install a piece of software that is on DVD/CD when you are away from your computer. Then it doesn't work so well. What if you want to rip a CD you got on vacation? What if you want to watch a movie? What if you want to install Office? Even though a lot of stuff you can download now online (thank god), there are still a lot of pieces of software, specially for Mac, that come on disc.

Apple seems to be sending mixed messages with this product. It's clearly ALL about portability and is not meant for "typical" desktop use. But it's almost like they are assuming that you'll be by your desktop in your home?

Some people need the ability. I think the asking price for the external superdrive is surprisingly reasonable, all things considered. External DVD burners are generally 60-80 as is, so mac didn't rape their customers weirdly enough.

A pricey toy for pansy boys (and girls).

Seriously, though, if you like this sort of thing fine. I can see where some people would definitely like it. My needs are different so I wouldn't want one.

I'm not too keen either - I agree with buck - it seems slightly schizophrenic with regard to the use of remote optical drives. I suppose it's aimed at a different market.

I'll stick with my very portable 12" PowerBook G4 for now thanks very much. Small, light, 2x USB 2.0, 1x Firewire, 1x Superdrive.
2008-01-15, 11:15 PM #40
Carrying around an external disc drive kills the portability.

The entire thing is completely retarded.
