If you watched his speech last night you will know now that he is the man. And that his soul will soon belong to you. Even if you don't like the man, you must admit the rubbish about him being dull and boring was unjustified.

I remember he said "God is on our (his campaign's) side!" Am I wrong in thinking that's just a little offensive?

Not saying Bush hasn't done it. It just really annoys me.

That does sound kinda funny.

Kerry "God is on our side!"
Bush "No God is on our side!"

Blah blah blah, I think to make that statement is absurd. God is on nobodies side, and you cant prove that he is if he were, which I'll assume he isnt.

I had better things to do than watch the speech (and apparently so did network tv from what I heard). I dunno, so far he has my vote.

Actually he didn't say that. He said he would not claim that god was on his side, he just hoped that he was on god's side.

I could care less about boring and dull. I'm more concerned with the fact that he can't make up his mind on where he stands on the important issues. He voting record as a Senator is all over the place and he's been quite hypocritial in many of his speeches

Did anyone watch it on CNN? The balloon incident was funny.

It was a good speech. It's funny that Bill thinks a speech like this is the end of the presidential election. He seems pretty strong in some regards, but you really have to wait for the debates.

What's interesting to me is that Kerry's foreign policy seems to be that of his friend Joseph Nye's proposals. Nye created the concept of "soft power", which is essentially getting power through attraction. When Kerry says that he wants the US to become a "beacon" for the rest of the world... it's obvious what he wants to do. My question is: How? I wonder if he plans on having greater support for UN peacekeeping? Or maybe he'll consult the EU before acting? It's all kind of vague, really. "Building alliances" isn't that simple.
2004-07-30, 3:24 PM #10
That's really how I felt, Legend. He made tons of vague points, but he didn't say how he was going to achieve his goals. It was really quite frustrating. He was just selling himself the entire speech, and it really made me characterize him as nothing more than a career politician. He just wanted to say what people wanted to hear, both "Soft-Republican" and Democrat.

*sigh* I wish Edwards was running as President and Kerry as Vice-President.

I understand it was only his acceptance speach, but it was very vague, and really only seemed to touch on foreign policy -vaguely, as others said.

Edwards' ideas on education, healthcare, etc. that he mentioned during his "two Americas" bit at the convention seem near-socialist."The best healthcare that money can buy" for everyone?

The more Kerry keeps playing up his Vietnam experience, the more I hope he bursts into flames.

He makes it out like he was a huge war hero, but he was protesting the war and calling the soldiers that were still there murderers and torturers. He tries to make it out like he was a war hero, but he would return to some minor scuffle he had earlier and reenact it for the camera as if it were glorious that he killed Viet Cong. He tries to make it out like he was a war hero, but he has admitted to burning innocent villiages and committing other atrocities while in vietnam.

His politics are fine by me, but the way he has been playing up the Vietnam War is disgusting, besides having nothing to do with how well he would do as a president.

I would think, considering the number of things they promise to change (the things mentioned, doubling spec forces, etc.) it would require a lot of taxes. It was either implied or expressed that most will be aimed at the top 2%, but how much revenue will that produce?

With medicine, there could be government action to lower prices and so on, I guess. And I suppose they don't have to follow through on all their promises.

He was preaching to the choir but, while doing so, managed to diminish his base. Besides the many inconsistencies that I saw him continue to propagate I was left wondering why his time served in a war (over 30 years ago) he criticized and committed war attrocities in was emphasized over his record in politics.

Now I'm obviously not a Kerry supporter but it appears that neither are most people that are "supporting" him. They're mostly "anyone but Bush" supporters. That's fine but doesn't anyone care about this man's record?

It's like the Daily Show had on the other day...

Did a thing saying that Kerry is the "Anyone but Bush" candidate.

From all my talk with people, I haven't found ONE person that likes Kerry and what he states. But I know a lot that just don't like Bush, so they are leaning towards Kerry as he is 'not Bush'.

Also, I'm getting fairly sick of his 'I was in Vietnam' crap. 4 months? Getting purple hearts for minor things. (Daily show did a joke yesterday saying Kerry applied for a purple heart after the doctors slapped him when he was born). It's stupid...

Article about how a number of people Kerry served with/under think he's rather unifit to be CinC:

A rather interesting critique of Kerry's "Let America Be America Again" thing:
http://slate.msn.com/id/2101575/

I also had one which seems to have expired where Kerry talks about how he's been 'just too busy' to attend various security briefings.

Quote:
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2"> "Kerry so far this year has missed 98 of 112 roll-call votes, including votes to extend jobless benefits and toughen nuclear cleanup where his absence meant the measures lost.

Kerry also missed a recent unanimous vote for $25 billion for Iraq construction after pledging to support it."

"Kerry, speaking in Atlantic City, accused Bush of saddling the middle class "with endless debt and deficits" and vowed to hike taxes on the rich "to put America's tax code in line with our moral code."

Bush, at a news conference, said the economy is strong and added: "I guess if you want to try to find something to be pessimistic about, you can find it no matter how hard you look, you know?""

Oh god, that was just awful. "THE DEMOCRATS BROUGHT US THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACTS! THE DEMOCRATS SUPPORT THE AFRICAN-AMERICANS". He should really get his facts straight.

Anyways, like always, Kerry gives his vague speech, without any indication of how he'll solve anything. But you know what, teh only way Bush's speech will be better is if he , unlike kerry, does tell his plan of action. Otherwise, each speech will be extremely similar just saying "vote for me!"

That's the thing. People who just say "Oh man democrats suck" just because they are Republican. They do the exact same thing, use the same exact tactics, and for the most part, believe in the same universal goal (with some exceptions, like abortion and stuff), they just go about it in different ways.

Yes, you're right. He was vague. But that's mainly because the real content is shown at debates. When they're asked how they plan to do things. They always say what they'll do before, and then explain how they plan to do it at the debates. But if you want to know vague, maybe you should watch some of Bush's campaign speeches. I saw him today talking about how he wants a safer america where everyone is free and safe... And I'm quoting there. Don't ***** about the redundancy to me. If he really wants a free and safe america, maybe he shouldn't be closing stateside police stations and opening ones in iraq. He needs to get his priorities straight.

The biggest points that most of you miss about Kerry's speech is that he told us that he will never fool us into thinking a war is justified. He will never lie to us about reasons for going to war. We will never go to war unless we have to. The American flag does not serve one man's agenda against a particular country. The National Guard is supposed to be the last group sent to war, not the first. Jobs that belong to american's will be done by americans. We will never fight a war without a plan for peace.

These are the key points of the speech. The biggest point is not how he plans to do these things, it is that he plans not to do things that have been done in the past 4 years. There is no need to explain that plan. You just DON'T do those things. The DNC is to get people hyped up. The debates are for discussing issues like abortion, gay marriage, and stem cell research. And believe me, these issues will be talked about.

As far as his "flip-flopping" is concerned, Kerry himself has stated that we live in a complex world. What you might agree with one minute might change the next, and you won't agree with it anymore. With the amount of lies in the past 4 years I can't see how he would be able to keep his vote on anything. New information is always proving the old false.

And you want to complain about him missing roll call? HE IS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT! He has a more important agenda right now. It's called saving the country from a religious fanatic. And I'm not talking about Bin Laden.

As far as the purple hearts. Shut up. Shut the f*ck up. You don't get medals for not doing anything. Especially purple hearts. You get purple hearts for getting injured. Shot. Broken leg. Stuff like that. You get a silver star for a selfless act of courage. He saved a green beret's life. That is one american that is alive today because of John Kerry. How many americans are dead today because of George Bush?

And by having a better foriegn policy I'm relatively sure he means not saying "well f*ck you" to the UN if they don't agree with us.

As far as the remainder of his Vietnam service, and the fact that when he got back he criticized the federal govt. for being in vietnam... Well he saw what was going on firsthand. He VOLUNTEERED to go to war for his country, even though he didn't agree with them. He served. He came home. And then he fought to end the war. And he helped out alot. Maybe he can help end another pointless war. He has done it once.

As far as tax increases. He says he plans to raise taxes on the rich. I say good. I say tax the hell out of them. My family lives on 40 thousand dollars per year. There are six of us. If a family of 6 cannot live on 150 thousand instead of 200, they need to remember how fortunate they are to have more than 40. And don't tell me that their job is easier. My father mines coal for a living. Their stock broker does NOT have a harder job! The middle class needs breaks. The wealthy already has enough breaks.

That speech last night was about one thing. Chastizing the Bush administration indirectly. If you don't point out what they did specifically, and who did it, it seems alot worse doesn't it? To sum up Kerry's speech in one sentence.

"I'm not a f*ck up like Bush."

If you wanna know more about why Kerry is the man, wait for the debates. I know two things about them. I am looking foreward to them. And George Bush is not.

By the way, it is impossible for Bush to make a better speech than Kerry. He doesn't have the ability. That's like saying Bobcat Golthwait can make a better speech than Martin Luther King did.

I disagree. Not because I support Bush but because Bush routinely outlines goals and principles. Like it or not, we all understand his views on issues. Kerry's best answer is that he is "complex", aparantly excusing his flip-flopping on nearly every issue.

Personally I will be surprised if Bush doesn't clean Kerry's clock in the debates. I believe so because Kerry has no record and Bush seems to have grown so much more comfortable in his role that I think most of his speaking flubs are in the past. If anyone here has actually seen Bush speak in a smaller more personal environment, he is extremely relaxed and clear speaking. I think he has become more like this in big venues now.

You just kind of threw this line out there, seemingly not even thinking about it... Do you even know how very little Kerry can do about this? There is basically nothing either he or Bush CAN do to "keep american jobs in america" short of becoming dictators and forcing American companies to shut down factories in foreign countries and re-locate within the borders so that we suddenly have job openings that NO ONE IN AMERICA WANTS because they are minimum wage sweat shop jobs. Let me just state that I'm not going to get into the human rights aspect, I'm sticking to economics here.

So explain that sentence to us, Bill. What jobs that belong to us Americans will suddenly be done by Americans? Or was that just something you spewed out that sounded nice, like so many politicians will do? Do you see many people out on the streets going "dammit all to hell, I wish I had a sweatshop to work in, but no, they're all in Malaysia!"? Because I sure haven't.

Its not as if there are foreigners crossing the borders, "sneaking" up into big exectutive carreers that "belonged" to an American.

I'm not going to go more deeply into this. Just think about it and see if you can explain what "american jobs being done by americans" means as opposed to what is being done right now.

I wont be voting for Kerry unless he can turn his campaign into something other than a giant attack ad against GW Bush.

If his flip flopping doesn't concern you, you realy need to educate yuorself on how badly he has flip flopped on major issues. He's on the national stage saying that he would never send US troops off to an unjustifed war, yet he voted to send troops to Iraq. At the same time, he voted against a bill that would have provided funding for body armor and other supplies and equipment for the deployed troops. He claims that he won't downsize the military yet his voting record shows just the opposite. HE wants to revamp the intelligence agencies so that another "Iraq" doesn't happen, yet he has continually voted against funding for intelligence.

That just at least cause at little concern.

That speech last night was about one thing. Chastizing the Bush administration indirectly. If you don't point out what they did specifically, and who did it, it seems alot worse doesn't it? To sum up Kerry's speech in one sentence.

"I'm not a f*ck up like Bush."

The problem I've seen in Kerry's speaches is that is ALL HE DOES. I haven't heard one speach where he really talks about what he wants to do and why it will help us as Americans and how he is going to get it done, other then just some vague thing that seems like he's just trying to tell us what we want to hear. All I ever hear from Kerry is "Bush is evil! Vote for me because I'm not Bush!"
