For me, it would probably be the anime Elfen Lied. My reasons are obvious if you have seen the show, but to anyone who wants to know, and either doesnt care about having the series spoilt, or has no plans to watch it, i will give a basic overview.

with the character Lucy, she was abandonded in a field at a young age, stuck in an orphanage where nobody liked her, and teased her due to the cat-ear looking horns on her head, she also had a puppy that she kept secret, she later told a girl in the orphanage about it who supposedly wanted to help her, but that girl told the three boys that bully her about it, and they literaly beat the puppy to death with a vase just to see her cry (as they teased her about the fact thatshe never shows emotion at all), and instead of crying, she LITTERALY tears them apart with her powers (go read about the show to get more info on what i am talking about)

And that above is just one minor part of the story, there are far more emotional moments in the series than that, but i dont want to write out the entire series, so just go look it up if you want to know more.

so basicly, what is a movie or tv show that you found the most depressing (as in, you could realy feel sorry for the bad stuff that happened to the characters), and give a slight description of why you find it depressing.

The Pianist. It was so ridiculously depressing that when he was FINALLY free from the Nazis for just a moment in the abandoned house, starving and he found the can of pickles I couldn't help but laugh when he couldn't open it up because he had nothing to open it with. If I recall there was something wrong with his leg or something at this point, and when the Nazi's stormed in it was horrible.

The only thing sadder than Fry's dog is when Littlefoot's mom dies. And the only thing sadder than that is Bridge to Terebithia.

Elfen Lied was pretty depressing, but at least Nana and Mayu didn't die, and presumably Lucy didn't either. It isn't nearly as depressing as Nana's Everyday Life, which is inspired by it (cartoon nudity and violence warning). I guess that really doesn't count as a movie or TV show, though.

"Well, the world has finally managed to blow itself up. Only Australia has been spared from nuclear destruction-" Holy hell, just that makes me weep-o.

Undoubtedly Fry's dog has been mentioned a lot of times and I never remember things like this when they're asked but I do remember this segment of an Italian "Fantasia".

You found that movie depressing? Seems to be rather uplifting to me.

I would say Million Dollar Baby, off the top of my head.

I'm just curious but what is the rationale for calling that movie depressing? It's a success story. Of course there is hardship in the film but I don't see how anyone could come away from that film thinking it is depressing. To me it seems the exact opposite of depressing.

I agree with Wookie. It's a success story. It didn't leave me depressed at all.

If you've ever been poor you'd understand. That's really the only way I can explain it.

Crash was really really depressing though. The worst part was when the rookie officer shot the guy who was showing him what they had in common .

I guess I could see where somebody might get depressed by seeing someone else succeed if it makes them think about how they have failed to succeed in their own life. Other than that, I found his triumph over adversity to be quite uplifting in the end.

That's not it really, at all. It's just that there's such a pit of despair, of hope, and he has to go through so much bull**** to attempt to succeed. The fact that America is like that for some people, and knowing a small piece of it, is what made it depressing for me.

I'm not sure I would say that America is like that for some people. Maybe more like America is like that for all people in that even when faced with the most terrible situations, we all have the ability to achieve the greatest of success. I personally couldn't relate to the type of hardship he faced in that film because I have been employed in the same organization for nearly 18.5 years. Then again, I guess I have certainly faced different types of hardship.
