No tax refund here. I don't pay tax.

Well, I do. But since it's basically all VAT I can't get any of it back. Most of the tax I would pay I don't because I'm either a student or I don't have a job.

But man. You must have got a lot back if you got that.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

I haven't decided yet. I'll have about $1600 to work with between my federal and state returns. I'm thinking car and health insurance.

Why don't we get more free money from the government? I want a million.
2008-01-29, 7:30 PM #11
Haven't filed yet. If I get anything close to what I got last year I'm getting an LCD TV (probably 37").

I've always said that tax returns are like somebody stealing your wallet, and then turning around and giving you $20 out of it.

I'm selling all of my state-bought textbooks and buying an HV20.

Why is it that you get tax teturns? Don't you only get tax back if you pay too much tax in the first place? how does that happen? I was under the impression that in Britland you only really get tax returns if you are self-employed and have to take care of your own taxes rather than letting your employer sort it out.

In the states, everyone pays different amounts depending on how much they earn, interest, family structure, and about a million other factors. So basically throughout the year, you and your employer estimate how much you want withheld. Then when it's time to pay taxes, you (or a professional, or software) figure out how much you actually needed to have paid. If you paid more than you needed too, you get anything extra back.

I'm making more this year than I did last and I had to pay in last year so I'll probably have to pay in again this year.

Damnit.

It's weird; I don't even live in the states but I got an email from "Internal Revenue Services USA" saying that I was eligible for a tax refund, and all I had to do was fill out some of my banking information on a third-party site.

What do you think guys? This seems pretty legit to me.

Vinnie, try to set your tax info at work up where you claim no dependents. I do that and it makes sure I don't have to pay anything and get some back in return.

Detty, in the UK you get tax back if you take an earnings loss. For example, I was working at the beginning of this tax year but since the summer I went travelling and then went back to uni so I wasn't earning any more. Consequently I was being taxed at the rate for what I would've earned over the entire year. At the end of this tax year I hope to be reimbursed because I didn't earn enough over the year to deserve taxation. I worked in pay roll for a while, we make adjustments for tax and changes in income, holiday pay etc all the time and it can end in you either being slightly under or over taxed at the end of the year. If you're still working for the same company you probably won't notice as much since we just adjust your pay cheque to accommodate it.

That's exactly what it is. You're getting $$ back because you paid too much in taxes from your deductions in your paycheck and all sorts of other taxes.

Expecting about $1200. I'm either getting a PS3, buying a Weatherby Vanguard, or saving it as part of a down payment for a new motorcycle.

I misphrased my question a bit. I understand why people get tax back, my suprise was that such a high proportion of you haven't been taxed properly and are in this situation.

I will be getting about 800 back (1400 if you include that 600 bucks we all get)

I will probably pay off my credit card, then buy a television.

I'll probably refrain from just blowing it on something materalistic this year. With the economy right at the "eh!", and the fed's lowering interesting rates again (), I'll probably slowly disperse it on stuff I need

If you claim no dependants you pay more taxes per check.

I claim one. It prevents my parents from claiming me. This also prevents the IRS from figuring out I don't pay a fixed rent, and then charging me more tax because of it.

STICK TO THE NORM.

It's how they do it--they flat tax you through they year basically, then give you back whatever was inappropriately taken I guess after they do maths. I guess it's easier to do it that way with this many people?

I think you guys are confusing claiming a dependent, and claiming an allowance on your W-4.

If you claim allowances on your W-4, they take out less but you risk not getting anything back (or having to pay). Claim 0 if you want these massive refunds

Be careful though, if you go crazy with allowances- not only is it fraud, but you'll have to pay a penalty if you owe too much back to government

They fine you if you keep them from earning interest. We cannot fine them fore keeping thousands of our dollars that they have to pay back. :(
