I'm going to guess you guys are all morons and don't realize that Dell laptops have completely rocked for the last year or so. Seriously. Great machines.

Which is why several of my friends who work Dell tech support constantly tell me not to get one, because, seriously, they rock.

Pretty much. I have two friends who worked for Dell before they shut down their Edmonton Money Hemhorraging Factory and both of them own new HP laptops. I'm constantly being told not to buy anything from Dell.

I've had to get a dell due to circumstances twice now, and I've loathed both of them.

ibuypower was worse, though. Now that I'm trying to fix that box and bring it back up to speed for my mother, it's proving to be horribly put together. They literally glued the motherboard to the chassis. What?

You obviously don't read much. Or pay attention to the computer market at all.

Dell hasn't made decent PC/laptops since, well, as long as I can remember. Hell, it's like every month there's another thread on SA about some guy getting screwed over by Dell.
2008-03-04, 6:54 PM #23
Just to clarify: The current machine I'm running is about 20% overpriced, the motherboard died in a month, the usb/audio plugs were really loosely screwed in and a few have already bent, they sent me 32 bit Vista instead of the 64 bit that's on my receipt (which ends up being better for me in the long run) and when I called them, they had this:

We'll send a crabby old contractor who doesn't know anything about computers to your house to spend 4 hours in your kitchen baconfishing and manhandling things out of your box, asking you if you know where cables go. We aint giving you vista 64 bit, and we won't replace the front usb drives because you broke them.

What?

So I took my Macbook into the Apple store today, in a Dell laptop case.

The guy said it was funny that I would do that.

I said it keeps people from wanting to steal it.

We had a good giggle.

Sorry about your computer.

I just got a third replacement graphics card installed in my Dell Precision M60 laptop today. It seems to die every 14 months or so. Other than that and a replaced DVD burner, this laptop has been great for the last 4 years.

I'm sorry, but I don't consider having to replace a video card 3 times and a DVD burner once in 4 years to be great. The video card and DVD burner I've got now have been working that long without problems.

Which if you think about it, doesn't really say much, since there are probably more dells out there than anything else.

On a different note, I use a Dell at work, and if I had admin access to remove all the stuff that loads up in the background, I wouldn't mind. Except it needs more RAM. And a faster CPU. And a better graphics card.

Nevermind.

Hmm. Why do you need a better graphic card on a computer for work?

I got a dell because my schooling paid for it, a 1505 laptop.. I've had no issues with it and it runs great. Of course I overly take care of all my equipment.

I saw a machine with better specs than that (Q6600, 500 gb drive) on woot the other day. I think it was a refurb though.

Still a ripoff.

The only laptop brand that I wouldn't buy a PC from is HP. Got a friend who bought one several years ago and it still runs good.
I don't like Dell though, their computers crap out too easily and then they put sub-quality parts in to replace it. My grandmother-in-law has had so much trouble with them. I had to tell one repair guy to get out and come back with a part that's actually packaged.

Uh... a couple of things that some of you guys SHOULD have noted...

First, no one mentioned any BETTER brands that sell for near the same price (and no, macbooks are not real laptops, sorry).

Also, for all those 'broken dells' that you see being brought into the shops, remember what about 75% of computer users are... "OH WOW I CAN GET A FREE PS3 FOR CLICKING THIS AD!!! OOPS MY CHILI SPILLED ON MY KEYBOARD!!"

FYI you can install Windows on Macbooks now so even if you were making a stupid comment about how OSX isn't a real operating system you're wrong.

...

what do they lack that makes them not "real" laptops?

or maybe a better question is what can you do with a "real" laptop that you can't do with a macbook?
