do you change your own oil?

How many of us spend a saturday morning once every three months changing the oil? (or whatever day/mileage you change at)

I've only done that once. That was all it took for me to decide I'd rather pay $20 to have someone else do it. It was messy and it was a pain in the butt to transport the oil to someplace that would take it.

Bah, didn't see the last option. I have changed our oil several times.

While I can see how you might have an advantage getting under the car I'm going to have to call BS on this.

I have other things to worry about so I'd rather just pay someone to do it. $15-20 is not too much to ask every 5,000mi.

This is why I don't do it.

Seeing how there's almost no benefit to doing it myself I pay to have it done. It's not even that much cheaper to do it myself.
2008-03-06, 9:02 PM #10
i do it if i feel like it or the weather is particularly nice and i have the time. really though with cost of filter + oil, you really only save 5-8 bucks on paying someone to do it for you.

Exactly. And my time is worth more than $5-8. No thanks.

i have to put 0w-30 synthetic in my car, and the oil and filter are ~$50. if i take it somewhere and they are only charging $30 i doubt they are using the right stuff...

and if i bring the oil i have no way to know if thats what they are actually putting in...

If I have the time / energy I'll do it myself, but often I don't.

I think I've probably done 50% myself.

With my full-time work full-time school schedule, I let someone else take care of it. Plus, he's a friend that has a nice car elevator thing.

I change the oil in my car. Not a big deal. I have curbside pick up of oil, so I don't have to take it anywhere.

The only difficult part is loosening/tightening the filters. I grew up in my grandpa's garage, so I have lots of practice.

Yeah, my dads workplace has a nice shop, with a large waste oil tank and free fresh oil as a perk. Also one of those pits of doom you drive carefully over to make it easier. >_>

I would if I knew how.

With the hassle of storing and disposing of the oil, I might as well just pay someone to do it.

I know how to, it's just I do not have the proper tools. Namely a jack. There's a lot of stuff I want to learn how to do. I'm ~3.5K miles from my 30K maintenance. It's probably silly to the point of stupid to do said maintenance on my own, but I would still like to see if I can do some.

I'm a mechanic, so yes I do my own as well as many others.

If you're being charged $30 they aren't using synthetic. Most places have an optional synthetic oil change that typically costs around $60.

That's the pain in the *** with most cars. I have a set of ramps that I drive up onto that gives me enough room to get under the car.

Mine's easy as pie to change; so yes, I do change my own oil.

I've changed the oil on the various cars I've owned scores of times. I also change the oil for my mother and my father, so I've done it hundreds of times. I can change the oil and not spill a drop in less than 10 minutes.

I have ramps, and I put an old portion of carpet under the oil pan just in case of drips. I also have a cheap jumpsuit I can put on over whatever clothes I have on at the time.

I'm getting to 40k miles by the end of the year.
I had it changed once at 26k.

Nothing wrong with public transport.

I think my dad has only ever changed the oil once that I can remember and he's not the kind of person that would pay for something he can do himself.

If I had a car, yes I probably would. I'm not sure how expensive it would be to get it done but assuming I had the time I would just prefer to do it myself for fun.

Also you can make sure you get full synthetic and not some cheap **** that way. Yeah, they say they're putting in synthetic when they charge you extra, but you never know what Manuel is actually doing back there.

Edit: Used the wrong ridiculous racist stereotype, fixed now.

Legit concern. Ch. 10 in San Diego did a piece on just such a thing. They found mechanics charging $200 and only doing about 15% work. That 15% comprising of driving your car in to the garage then driving it back out. **** went down.

Yep. I used to take it in but realized that the people were doing a bunch of crap wrong:

1. only let about 3/4 of the oil drain out
2. overtighten oil filter
3. not removing old oil filter gasket (which was stuck because they overtightened it at previous visit)
4. overtighten drain plug (strips threads)

I tried a few different places before I gave up. It takes only 20-30 minutes, and around here I can drop off used oil at a number of places for free.

I have never changed my own oil...I don't even know how. I'd like to, but being in college means no tools, no place to work, no nothing. Someday I will, though.
