Over here, it gets national attention (by which I mean round the clock rolling news coverage for months, even years), but only if it's a middle class white kid.
Anyway, I just wanted to throw my personal experience in, because a few people have mentioned the "what happens if you ask out a lesbian by accident, is it ok for her to punch you? scenario. Slight disclaimer, it may come across as though I'm on KOP_AoEJed's side (I assure you, I'm not).
I've been in many situations where I've been chatting to a guy and started to get a feeling he may be interested. It's always hard to judge, because if I say anything too soon, it could cause embarrassment or offense to them, but I try to preempt them asking me out by telling them in advance that I'm in to girls. If I have judged it correctly, and they were about to make a move, then usually the response is respectful, and we can then go on chatting as friends, without any awkwardness. However, there have been a few occasions when the guy has taken this as some kind of challenge. I've had some pretty offensive things said to me ("oh come on darling, all you need is a big, hard...." etc etc, you get the idea), along with just generally being pestered by straight guys who think it's ok to disrespect my choices. Now, I'd never condone violence (unless someone physically tried to force me in to something, in which case they will lose their testicles), but the sheer audacity of someone thinking they can change you by leering at you and refusing to take no for an answer just thoroughly pisses me off.
But anyway, that's not actually the situation we're talking about here. We're talking about kids. One kid made a (perhaps misguided?) gesture to another, who had somehow got it into his head that the correct response was to murder him. what a society we live in.
