And hitting men isn't? I've never understood this sentiment. Women don't need our protection, they are not delicate and special and innocent. I would certainly hold more restraint from hitting a woman because of emotional and societal pressure, but if a woman attacks me, **** that, I'm going to defend myself.

To summarize, running up to a woman on the street and punching her in the face should not be considered more wrong than running up to a man and hitting him in the face.

The average woman is a lot weaker than the average guy, plus they have a lot of places on them that you can touch if you don't like getting sued. It's the same reason that a 25 year old can't punch the lights out of a ten year old just because the ten year old is annoying.

Patronizing comments from Obi_Kwiet are up, I wonder where pa Wookie is.

Also, what's with two gay major threads suddenly popping up this week? It's like, threads about politics and religiona always turn big but gay threads kind of explode into "discussion" immediately!

Amusing, really.

"A lot weaker"? I doubt that. It also depends on the woman...if she's got a hearty build I'd not be worried about hurting her. If she's 4' and 100 lbs then it's a little different.

And I'm not talking about someone just being annoying. I'd never attack someone for being annoying. I'm talking about if my own safety was threatened, I wouldn't hesitate to fight back just because it's a woman who is attacking me.

Really, by your logic, the "wrongness" of attacking someone should depend more on how robust they are and how much they could defend themselves. I would agree with that, considering there are gigantic women and small, girly men. I'd consider it more "wrong" to hit a tiny guy than a gigantic woman sporting a butch and tattoos.

hurr stereotypes

"A lot" maybe not, certainly weaker yes - but a quick look back at history and you'll find men considered to be a lot weaker than the average in outstanding positions. Alexander the Great (quite a tiny guy), Peter I the Great (quite the large but really skinny guy), hell even Octavius/Augustus (even ordered that all statues of him should be automatically buffer than in reality).

Also, the whole "punching someone annoying" attitude is really beastly itself. "hurr hairy guy said my backhair looks dumb hurr hairy guy smash" And if one sees punching gay people because they annoy him/her as a completely viable option, hell, welcome to Village de Homme Primitif. Wow, great logic there.

As in, no logic there. Wow.

I would sooner restrain a woman by pinning her to the ground before I would punch her. That is, if she attacks just using her fists or legs, if she has any sort of weapon that could be fatal, I would take her out... that goes for men, women, AND children. If someone has a knife or a gun, you take them down by whatever means necessary. (not necessarily meaning KILL them, but if you have to punch their lights out to save yourself, by all means.)

I think the issue here is hate, not being gay... A lot of people are really hateful about a lot of crap, and can't stand the thought of showing love to everyone, especially if they're very different.

Love.

There are many things that bother me about this. One of the ones no one else has mentioned yet it how much attention this is getting simply because the word "gay" is involved.

People are killed and murdered every day. Why is this one so important?

The gay community does a very good job of pushing their agenda through to the media. This is not meant as an insult; however, everyday many people are killed for many different reasons, and only the gay stories make the news.

This is still a terrible event, and I am not anti-gay or anti- anything, but simply making a legitmate observation.

[Perhaps agenda is the not the best word. What I mean is that the gay community does a good job of spreading their message, better than any other group at the moment.]

I think it's largely that we're jaded and used to murders that happen for other reasons. People kill for food, for money, for whatever, in many places. This is different because the people involved were barely teenagers, and the murder occurred because the victim was gay, which many of us find to be an incredibly shallow reason.

Its probably because its so "unique." Sure lots of people get killed, but this was a young kid who killed another one.

Its kind of like when people go missing. It happens a lot, but it only gets national attention if theres something "weird" about it.

There isn't enough information.

All I've heard it: Straight kid gets valentine from gay kid. Straight kid kills gay kid a few weeks later.

It's possible there is more to it than that.

Did the straight kid actually confess and say it was because the other kid came on to him?

Wow, I'm calling you Punchy-McFagdodger from now on. How can you not recognize your slight homophobia when you specifically inform your gay friends that you're not gay and you don't like gay friendliness. That's like me telling all of my religious friends not to read their bible around me, or ask me about religion. You're closed minded and easily offended. And apparently you think punching people solves your fears.

Yeah, I absolutely hate it when the handful of gay guys I personally know give me compliments on my looks. How disrespectful of them to tell *me*, another male with whom they may be attracted to, that I look good in that shirt, or with my hair like that! You know what I do, I get offended and ignore what they say! It's not like women might think similar things, so those gays are just wasting my time with unneeded comments! Go back to San Fran, gaywads!

This thread hs taught me one thing.

It's okay to call someone out when their homophobia isn't based on religion. When it is based on religion, it makes you a serious ******* to call someone out on their homophobia.

Vinny's second link actually pisses me off more than the first. In the first case, we're talking about a few violent idiots who, as even the most hardened homophobe will admit, have no place in a civilized society. In the second case, we're talking about the government of a modern Western democracy that's trying to send a young man back to likely torture and eventual death in Iran. I can't understand how they could even try to justify that.

Over here, it gets national attention (by which I mean round the clock rolling news coverage for months, even years), but only if it's a middle class white kid.

Anyway, I just wanted to throw my personal experience in, because a few people have mentioned the "what happens if you ask out a lesbian by accident, is it ok for her to punch you? scenario. Slight disclaimer, it may come across as though I'm on KOP_AoEJed's side (I assure you, I'm not).

I've been in many situations where I've been chatting to a guy and started to get a feeling he may be interested. It's always hard to judge, because if I say anything too soon, it could cause embarrassment or offense to them, but I try to preempt them asking me out by telling them in advance that I'm in to girls. If I have judged it correctly, and they were about to make a move, then usually the response is respectful, and we can then go on chatting as friends, without any awkwardness. However, there have been a few occasions when the guy has taken this as some kind of challenge. I've had some pretty offensive things said to me ("oh come on darling, all you need is a big, hard...." etc etc, you get the idea), along with just generally being pestered by straight guys who think it's ok to disrespect my choices. Now, I'd never condone violence (unless someone physically tried to force me in to something, in which case they will lose their testicles), but the sheer audacity of someone thinking they can change you by leering at you and refusing to take no for an answer just thoroughly pisses me off.

But anyway, that's not actually the situation we're talking about here. We're talking about kids. One kid made a (perhaps misguided?) gesture to another, who had somehow got it into his head that the correct response was to murder him. what a society we live in.

Why did you mention me? I'm a hippie. I don't hit people. I've only ever hit someone once in my life. I felt horrible about it, and hope I never let myself do it again. I generally hit doorframes when I'm angry and need to punch things. I'd hit walls but that might break them. Doorframes are nice and solid. Corners of walls work also, or places I know there is a strong reinforcement.

Also, I went on a 3 week sailing trip once with a gay guy hitting on me the whole time. He'd sneak up behind me and bite my shoulder. I generally just karate chopped him(jokingly), or push him off the boat if we were anchored. Once, I was laying on the settee, and he tried to lay on my face. I wedged a pillow in between and stayed there for awhile. But only because the girl I liked at that point was on the rest of me. >__>
