If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

you dont notice that it doesnt fit well? to be specific, the silence wasnt too long or too short per se - the song resumes on an offbeat because the silence lasted for a weird duration like 2 and a half quarter notes (assuming standard 4/4). im not big into music theory or anything, but the song shouldve continued on a beat as defined by the time signature (a beat = the "numbered" beats when you count "1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &" in a measure) to make it more natural, but instead causes some dissonance by starting offbeat. im pretty sure most songs that incorporate blocks of silence do this.

more importantly, snootle, what do you play in the band?
2008-03-17, 5:22 AM #48
LOL.. we did that on purpose, we stretched the break a bit to make things a little more interesting. It's not supposed to be in time.

And I play the keyboards.

Thanks for the compliments!

You don't need to explain time signatures to me. I'm a drummer.

And yeah, I get all that. That's what makes it awesome. It's not like this sort of thing is unprecedented. (listen to Money by Pink Floyd, for an example of a non-traditional beat. try to count it out.) The dissonance is what makes it great. As long as the band is all there. Look at songs that switch between 4:4 and 6:8 time (Losing, by Hurt, for example). Musicians that get too locked into certain "rules" end up becoming just another band that no one's ever heard of.

Portal makes you think strangely if you play it too long.
Sneaky sneaks. I'm actually a werewolf. Woof.

There's a difference between using complicated/multiple time signatures and randomly dropping half a beat in a 4/4 song.

Why is it bad?

o.0
2008-03-19, 11:16 PM #62
It's not necessarily bad. I really don't mind it. It's just awkward- and not in a good way.

btw MESA!
2008-03-20, 3:47 AM #63
I like muchly. It's managed to block the idiots out of my mind running round shouting 'the cake is a lie!' like it's funny - I got real sick of that line at my 20th birthday I can tell you.

So yes. Huge Success.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Thanks!

And no, we won't be re-recording the song because of one mispronounced word. :P

Sheesh, the pause isn't awkward, it's not dropping a beat, it's not odd meter.

We've got a big banner linking to it from our page.

We won't be uploading it to our player though... people who've never played the game and heard the original song wouldn't enjoy it.

I think it's because game soundtracks are either a bunch of crappy "orchestra" synths or a Nickelback and Young Jeezy playlist so in comparison people found it refreshing
