Engineers are NOT failures. On 2fort, I've begun sneaking into the enemy intel room as an engineer to lay down a turret and a teleporter. I saved my team twice from the final capture. Our intel will be sitting 5 feet from their capture point with 1 point left in the game, and it resets because my turret kept them from capping.

That would be badass to set up turret-camp-land in the enemy flag room.

But I have to say that engineers who camp their OWN flag room and sit there for the entire game waiting with their SG directly on top of their intel is one factors that can make 2fort a really fun map to a truly boring one. I was once with a team where 3 engineers decided to just sit around the room with 3 SGs and wait and wait and wait.

That's a big part of the strategy, and any team who can't take out a turreted 2fort intel room isn't a good team. It's why there's uber.

I've developed a very useful intel scheme where 2 turrets in the intel room will provide a perfect defense. One on the intel, and the other at the other end of the desk (on the floor) that can look down both halls. Protects against spys and anyone else. Besides a good uber team.

But that's the thing, it's easier for a team on 2fort to play defense than to coordinate an offense. It's the internet, people rather play sniper wars on 2fort then move in.

I'm not saying I never had fun on 2fort. I've had amazing moments where my team moves in and uber rush. And going in as a group to kill off any defense, turrets and all. It's just when both teams feel like playing defense is when 2fort gets boring. I'm not sure if it's a matter of laziness or fear of dying (in a game..), but when people go defense-mode and rather camp, the map starts to feel like a drag.

Sometimes, when 2Fort is being especially boring, I'll go Spy and party with those Engineers. It might take a while, but they eventually figure out that I'm not there to cause trouble.
