Any Wetshavers in Massassi?
2008-06-07, 11:00 AM #1
I decided to pick up the old lost art of proper shaving, so I don't get horrible, horrible razor burns with electric razors and have to pay "wtf?" prices on disposable cartridges for the mach-4/5/6/7/8 crap that you can only get a few shaves out of.

The question now is, should I get the Merkur safety blade, or a straight razor?

From what I read, the straight razor takes a lot more considerable skill to use, but is an awesome shave. Also, awesome people in movies and plays used them as weapons (The Twins in the Matrix, Sweeney Todd, etc.)

And from my understanding, safety blades have a comparable shave up to the safety razor, but you are still disposing blades after a week and a half, each replacement costing about 40 cents. It's also the razor that our grandfathers use.

So I ask Massassi, which one of you wet shaves, and which method should I go with?

Not enough options, but I use a mach 3 turbo and I get at least 7-10 shaves out of each blade, for me thats about 4-5 weeks per blade. I only shave once or twice a week.

Then your option is "dry shaving". Only twice a week? :o

Yeah, amazingly enough about 90% of my facial hair is almost the same color as my skin tone, so until it starts getting long enough to see it, its not a hassle... i dont really get the shadow effect like some people.

I have shaved with a straight blade, but it's almost too hard, and sometimes I'd just rather use my Mach 3. I sometimes shave with the straight blade if I want to look especially good, as it tends to last longer for some reason.

YOU tried to use a straight blade?? were you feeling a little suicidal that day?

When using an electric razor, use a dry shave balm before hand. LectricShave is one brand that I can think of. They're supposed to help a lot.

Straight razors probably aren't worth it. It takes considerable skill to not only use, but to sharpen. You'll have to strop it before each use, and it's not that easy to do.

I use an electric shaver, and even though it's not among the poorest ones, the result isn't as good as with a regular razor. I also have to run the thing on the same spot multiple times for a decent result. I doubt I'll revert to regular razors any time soon though.

EVERY COUPLE MONTHS??!?!?!

srsly?

How often do you shave, once a week?

(I replace the blade on my Mach 3 about once a week (which is usually 3 - 4 shaves, unless I'm feeling lazy (like now), then the thing lasts longer)
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Fusion blades last me about 2 months but I'm only hacking it off about once a week at the moment because I can't be bothered.

:P

Funny -- I replace the blade on my Gillette Sensor XL once every two months, or so; and I shave with plain water every two or three days.

Just because I'm crippled doesn't mean I don't have a steady hand, and I can't hold a pencil shaped object. Don't be ignorant.

I wetshave. But only half-arsedly most of the time. When it gets to the point of OH GOD THE NECKBEARD IS TAKING OVER I generally shave everything off.

Even so, I don't go through many disposable razors, and I shave every other day in general.

Er, I use one of them mach blades every couple of days, but I only need to change the blade once every couple of months myself.

I've used the Mach 3 or cheap disposables for years and been quite content with them. I recently tried the battery powered Mach [forget the exact model] after being very dubious of electrically-powered razor blades, and it's actually a joy to use, very quick and close and doesn't get clogged. I'm incredibly picky about stubble, so I tend to pick up and discard various brands and models and I'm pretty happy with this one so far. Only thing is use a good cream with it to help avoid nicks and burn. Kiss My Face are pretty good in my experience.

Also, advice passed on from Harlen Ellison- conditioner your facial hair before shaving, it softens it and makes the whole experience more comfortable.

I use a Rolls Razor safety razor that you can resharpen and strop. It has a jig that does it for you so it gives you the benefit of sharpening a straight razor, but the ease of a safety.

Be sure and use a badger brush and maybe even a mug and soap. The soap cakes also generally last much longer.
