Spore.. finally
2008-06-08, 3:38 PM #1
hey, has anyone been following spore? It seems kinda cartoon-ish, but I think the concept of it is really cool. I'm planning on getting the demo when it comes out on the 17th of this month, as well as the full version when it's released. They have been talking about releasing this for the past 2 years.. so it better be good.. haha

Anyone else plan to get it?

Wow, I didn't know a demo was coming out that soon, I just wrote it off to be one of those games that I would probably not ever see. :awesome:

The gameplay doesn't seem all that redeeming beyond the creature creator, which is just there to distract you from the fact that this game has like no narrative.

Are you condemning an entire genre?
2008-06-08, 3:54 PM #6
lame.. I'll be in basic training. :(
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

No, I'm condemning this game because it doesn't seem as fun as say... sim city or something.
2008-06-08, 4:04 PM #8
Yeah I think the game will be pretty much a novelty. Once people get past their first few creatures it'll be forgotten.

A game than also has no narrative.

It has a little.

Sim City 2000 remains the best game of all such games, followed closely by Transport Tycoon.

The problem with Spore is going to be that there's too much room for customisating your species, it's going to be exactly the same as what was wrong with The Movies. It'll be a fantastic game by all accounts but people will lose interest because they'll have to choose between playing horizontally (exploring everything there is to do) or vertically (playing to reach the end). Sim City was good because there wasn't actually all that much to do, they just managed to make the basics addictive.

Well, like 90% of games today, the three seconds they spent justifying the game with story is entirely irrelevant to how fun the game is. Spore doesn't even need a story. You make the story.

Spore is a gimmicky game that took way to long to come out, kind of like DNF only it's gimmick is bigger and I don't think hacked pieces of itself off. Also, it's not a demo, it's the Creature Creator, only you have to pay to use everything there.

Are there any consequences in creating poorly planned-out creatures or does anything that you make survive? If the game was critical as to how you physically designed your living things (i.e. having 11 legs will not be good for your species), then I'm interested. Otherwise it would seem like you can go bats**t insane and watch your crazed manifestation happily graze the lands despite its penis-shaped, one-eyed facade.

Supposedly the whole focus of the design was based on being able to get EVERY player to the space-sandbox part. I understand that you can SKIP bits if they're too hard, which IMO is a bit of a fail.

Oh god... I can't wait for Spore. It's the only game I've actually looked forward to since HL2.

I thought HL2 was boring...
2008-06-09, 6:28 AM #20
It was.

Ep1 and Ep2 were good though.

Eh. I thought some parts of HL2 was great. And I enjoyed pretty much all of Episode 2.

I thought Episode 1 was the most boring of all. It took the "filler" between the good portions of HL2 and just expanded upon it. ZZZZ

This is actually the exact same example I was going to use.

Good lad.

I'm still not sure what to think about Spore, but when I get my new computer I'll definitely download the demo to check it out.

I think it will be as described, good for a few days, then forgotten.

It doesn't look like it has much long term playability. It has replay value, that's about it.
Sneaky sneaks. I'm actually a werewolf. Woof.

I'm still really excited about this game.

i think space game alone is enough to make me buy this game and never leave my house again.. then they threw in flow, simlife, simcity, and a strategy game.... completely awesome. I don't care if they look a little cartoonish... i think if you spend time on it, and fine tune everything, you could get something really cool.. just like fine tuning the JK engine

Creature creator trial has been leaked from magazine since yesterday. Kinda meh since it's only got 25% of the parts of the pay for demo and all you do is make creatures that basically just interact with themselves.

After the game's release I give it six days before the penis people start flying around in their penis-shaped spaceships.

Thanks, Japan.

I have a feeling that the game is going to be like the trailers. Interesting at first, but no staying power.
2008-06-14, 12:49 PM #31
Playing with the creatures has kind of got me stoked, but I don't really have too high hopes.

Having played with it, though, it seems like you can get the best looking stuff with the more insectoid stuff, instead of HOLY CRAP GOOGLY EYES. And it takes a bit of work for them not to move like idiots.

Also, Fonzie bee people.
