3G iPhone and other WWDC 2008 discussion
2008-06-09, 11:35 AM #1
I assume I'm not the only one reading the live coverage of the WWDC 2008 keynote. The 3G iPhone was just announced, with the promise that it would be more affordable and available in more countries. It also has a flush headphone jack at last, still don't get why they didn't do that from the beginning.

But it's still a gimmicky pile of crap. :\
2008-06-09, 11:42 AM #3
You're an angry pile of crap. :\

Yeah. So most of the rumors have been true so far. :)

2008-06-09, 11:50 AM #7
Thats actually not too bad.

Oh wait except that I can get like a 40gb mp3 player for that much.
2008-06-09, 11:52 AM #8
Wow. They actually lowered the price.

Yet 200 bux/evros for a mobile phone hahaha Coffeebucksboys

I'm not going to argue because I know it's pointless.

If you can show me a $199 MP3 player with all the features of the iPhone (including being a phone), with any storage capacity, please be my guest.

Give me a call when you buy that mp3 player and let me know how the reception is...

My Samsung Blackjack plays mp3s and has unlimited storage upto however many microsds I feel like carrying. Not that I ever use it as an mp3 player.

Too bad the interface makes me want to gouge my eyes out with a rusty sprinkler key.

Yeah, I'm gonna go swap my current iphone out with the new one on day 1, the $200 price drop totally blew me away.

Agreed, I'll be upgrading the day it comes out.

Anyone want to buy a 1st gen iPhone? $100. :D

I'm glad I held off buying until second gen, I wasn't sure whether they'd get GPS in but they did which is even better.

So now they can track your phone calls, music choice and your position. Neat. Even better, the consumers pay to become market data.

They've been able to track position of a cell phone long before the iphone. :tinfoil:

I'll be getting one once my current contract runs out circa Christmas time.

Sexcellent!
2008-06-09, 1:04 PM #18
I'll be getting one. I already have AT&T, so it won't be a huge change.

I'll probably get one if it's available without a plan. Then I won't use it as a phone until it is unlockable.

Is it still incapable of doing proper bluetooth (aka anything other than headsets), doing multimedia texts, working with other networks, using any ringtones, etc etc etc? Cause seriously, the iPhone may have had a few neat features, but they absolutely jacked the hell out of the basics.
2008-06-09, 3:26 PM #21
No ringtones really sucks, but the other stuff doesn't bother me much.
2008-06-09, 3:42 PM #22
I'd consider being trapped with AT&T and unable to tether it via bluetooth to my laptop to be pretty bothersome. I use my phone as a modem all the time :/
2008-06-09, 3:44 PM #23
Lucky you, data/internet plans in Canada are so expensive that I didn't even consider that feature of the phone. Heh.
2008-06-09, 4:24 PM #24
iphone has had custom ringtones for a while now. i know on mac you can export an iphone ringtone from garageband. i'm pretty sure there's a way to do it on windows, i just haven't tried.

After further investigation, it appears that the price is carrier-subsidized. 3 year contract = do not want.
2008-06-09, 4:31 PM #26
Ah spook, 200 bucks? I might as well get one, now.

Unlock it and sell it on eBay. People are still paying ~$300-400 for 4GB iPhones. I sold mine on eBay - it only took one minute. But I'm not getting a new one until I get back from England next June - don't see the point in being tied to a contract.

Only via iTunes using music you purchased and it costs money.

Also, it should be noted that if you unlock your iPhone and attempt to use it on other networks, MANY functions/programs on the phone will suddenly and without warning refuse to work. Wikipedia goes into detail about that process.

Um... users have been able to create their own ringtones since around the beginning of this year. Just take any 30-second m4a clip and change the extension to m4r and put it in your ringtones folder.

Then you ought to correct Wikipedia, because it specifically states that it has to be purchased.

The method he mentioned requires an ssh daemon running on the iphone to facilitate scp transfers of the ringtones. Not exactly trivial, and certainly outside the range of feasible options for the stereotypical iPhone owner.
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

uh, no.

go in garageband, put in ANY song, mp3, purchased, whatever.

cut it to whatever length you want.

go to share menu, click "send ringtone to itunes"

profit.

Last I checked 95% of the market does not have Garageband, nor can obtain it.
