I only had one major bug that I remember, but I'm a save-a-holic, so I was able to find a previous point that let me pass the catastrophe. It was in the area where the Handmaiden is from.
Why #2 was a #2... well, for starters, the first locale took SO LONG to get going, I honestly thought it would never end. In fact, I reinstalled it a few weeks ago, and quit again before finishing on the first planetoid/asteroid/whatever. I knew it was going to take forever, and I just couldn't get into it.
The plot was weak, convoluted, and for my simple brain, sometimes confusing. Like the explanations why the Ebon Hawk was still there, why TM-34 is still there were all weak, and the connection between the two games was very, very weak.
Also, there were lots of times (like the last location... can't remember the name) and it was just fight, fight, fight, fight... kind of a run-and-gun situation but at a haltingly slow pace because of the turn-based fighting. Don't get me wrong, I thought the turn-based fighting in KOTOR #1 was well balanced and fun. About the time I was tired of the story, it was time to kick a lot of butt. #2 doesn't feel nearly so balanced.
A minor point, but you spend an awful lot of time in the first location running around in your underwear. Sure, Atton Rand makes fun of you for it, but to go so long in your skivvies just felt... wierd. I mean it was a LONG TIME. If I'm a former jedi, why does it take me so long to find some pants? hehehe, that's funny if you say it out loud.
Probably the biggest point is the end. Regardless of how you played (light or dark), the end is such a humiliating let down. You spend 30+ hours getting to this point, and you expect some sort of big payoff (#1 delivered pretty well), and you don't get one. You blink, it's over. The ship flies away. The end. That's all you get.
To some, those are probably minor issues (hey, it is MY opinion), but I'm a big fan of stories. I like SW because I like the story. I like most of the novels because I like stories. Most of my favorite movies I like because of their stories. I didn't like KOTOR2 that much because I didn't think the story was very good.
For me, KOTOR2 is like that candy that is so sour it makes your head implode. You pop it in your mouth because you know it's candy, and it will have a sweet taste eventually, but the sour is so overwhelming you ask yourself if you can continue or if it is worth it to continue. Then, in the end, after sticking with it for so long, when you do get to the sweet stuff, it lasts .5 seconds and poof, it's gone.
And in case you might think I'm an RPG hater, I absolutely loved KOTOR. It's one of my most favorite games ever.
