Firefox 3 Awesome bar
2008-07-08, 11:42 AM #1
Some people (fishstickz) hate the new awesomebar in FF3.

Personally I've found it very useful during daily browsing. It's learned the sites I go to a lot, and helps me find sites that I've visited but didn't bookmark.

With visiting all these damn blogs / getting sent links/ googling things, its pretty easy to pull up something I may have only seen briefly.

So I ask you! Is the Awesomebar awesome?

Hate it hate it hate it hate it.

I rarely save bookmarks and I do a lot of direct browsing meaning that I rely on autocomplete of URLs. Now it autocompletes all kinds of other crap.

It sounds like you're doing it the hard way.

Generally, I like it. It's great if I can't really remember something, all I need to know is one or two key words and it'll generally find it.

From a privacy standpoint it sucks, though. For example, my girlfriend is fine with porn but if she wasn't it'd make it a pain to hide.

The sites you visit the most will eventually start to come up on the list first

I'm sort of mixed about it. It's good for some things (finding websites I don't visit often), but bad for some things (finding websites I go to often), which is kind of obnoxious.

I'm giving it a week to see if it learns me better, and starts to perform better.

Also mbisfat.

For frequently visited sites I still use keywords. For example, to go to these forums I don't type massassi and pick it out of the bar, I type my "mass" keyword and hit enter.

I'm just having some issues, like, I visit my guild's forums more often than massassi, the address is guildyguildguild/forums, and when I type in "forums", I expect massassi to be first, since it's forums.mass--, but my guild's comes up first.

See, that's what I mean. I don't like that. I miss good old alphabetic autocomplete.

I don't keep a history, so the only thing it does for me is auto-completing bookmarks by URL or title.

The autocomplete of bookmarks is probably its best feature. I love it.

I still have Firefox 2.... can I put the tab bar on the bottom yet in F3?
2008-07-08, 4:59 PM #18
nvm found a plug-in that does it.

I can understand the frustration in that case, but I guess that's why my usage of keywords works out. I have a keyword for every site I visit on a regular basis (I'm pretty sure I started doing this in the first place because something about the auto-completion between an old version of Firefox and IE was different and was annoying me when I first switched), so I really only rely on the bar for finding un-bookmarked sites, or jumping to a particular page. ie. If I want to play Scrabulous, instead of typing "face" for facebook, I'll type "scra" and pick it from the list.

Is there no way to disable the bar? If not, then I don't really agree with that, with such a radical change people should have the option.
2008-07-09, 7:39 AM #20
You can disable it in about:config but I think it's good they're trying to force it, because otherwise people won't use it at all.

I think Jepman's awesome bar is awesome.
2008-07-09, 11:36 AM #22
I am not crazy about it either, I liked the simple old autocomplete.

Don't get me wrong, I still love Firefox. It's just I think I liked v2.0 url bar better.

Also, I don't know if this is a change from previous versions but this feature annoys the heck out of me:

If you select the option delete cache/cookies on close it doesnt do it automatically, instead when you close the browser it brings up that window that lets you select which types of temporary files to delete.

I don't know if FF2 did this, I suspect it's a new feature, but I think it's awesome that you can use the scroll wheel to scroll the tab bar when you have more tabs open than can fit in view.

I like the awesome bar.

For those that want to look at porn privately, just have two profiles.

I don't save history nor use bookmarks so it never shows up for me.

What's with all these people who never save their history? I think I'd be lost without it, I never remember site URLs anymore, I just go off my history. I specifically keep my profile backed up because of that (And I've had this same profile since FF1!).

Not saving history I could understand. But no bookmarks? Unless you're my 80 year old grandma who can count the sites she visits on one hand, that just seems like making things hard on yourself for no reason.
2008-07-09, 6:33 PM #30
I don't save bookmarks because 1) I basically leave all my tabs open all the time and when I close FF or restart my computer I have it save my tabs then anyways, and 2) I actually really do remember all the sites I regularly visit. Those that I want to get to quickly I do with Speed Dial. If I'm working or something and I come across a page I need for later I usually default to #1.

Never use bookmarks crew here. If I don't know the adress by heart it's not a site worth visiting.

You guys who don't like it are probably using it wrong. For instance, for massassi, you could search for page title or url. If I wanted massassi I would type "ma tem fo" or "mass", both of which bring up my bookmarked button on the bookmarks toolbar.

I missed the "Always ask before clearing private data option." So now I dont get the pop-up everytime I close FF3.

Thats a little better. Im still not that impressed with awesome bar, I guess too many of my bookmarks have a similar topic.

Do you not use the contact list in your phone either? If you can't remember the number, they're not worth calling? :P
woot!

I hated the Awesome bar at first. I know most of my websites by tab-complete mnemonics from FF2, and the Awesome bar completely broke that. Then not only did I get used to it, it got used to me, because the awesome bar is so awesome that it LEARNS :awesomelon:

Now the Awesome bar is totally Awesome!

The thing is, I don't want the bar to autocomplete bookmarks or keywords or anything. I already have a quick way to access my bookmarks, I don't need yet another way to do the same thing, especially when it gets in the way of accessing other pages that would normally autocomplete.
