Wondering if my Wii was worth it
2008-07-29, 7:13 PM #1
Even though the computer is my primary mode of gaming, I bought a Wii over a year ago and got some good mileage out of a couple games like Twilight Princess and Excite Truck, but I slowly stopped using it, even before my deployment. After getting back, I haven't touched it once. Are there many games I'm missing out on? Did they ever implement some kind of online play? Should I have gotten an Xbox 360 instead? Or should I have just stayed away from consoles since I'm primarily an FPSer(not the only kind of game I play though) and paddles drive me nuts for shooters? (keyboard/mouse > all, just saying)

No, it was not worth it.

Besides a few exclusive shooters, a good handful of console FPS titles do make their way to PCs. Gears of War, Mass Effect, Call of Duty 4, Unreal Tournament 3, etc. The question then would be, has your PC been keeping up with the times?

Sell the Wii, I say. But atleast rent a few Wii games before you sell the thing. Try No More Heros and Metroid Prime 3 for a few days. After that, say goodbye.

So much for the revolution that everyone was raving about.
It took a while for you to find me; I was hiding in the lime tree.

Brawl alone was worth the Wii IMO.

That said, check out LostWinds too >.>

Not gonna lie... Trauma Center proved interesting for awhile.

I like the Wii, I don't get the kind of solo action from it as I do the X360, but when friends are around, its all about the Wii.

nope.

Brawl is better than Melee, but its not better than the N64 game. That one still holds my interest. Melee was crappy IMO, and brawl barely bridged the gap.

Do you think the Wii was a waste? If so, then it was. This is a pretty subjective issue.

I'm very unhappy with my Wii and if I could go back in time I'd have never gotten one. I guess I could sell it but at this point I don't think I'd get enough to make it worthwhile.

And by shinier you mean less vibrant so it's even harder to make anything out when the camera zooms all the way back thanks to the low resolution. But a Nintendo game suffering because of the hardware isn't anything new.

If I am skilled enough or not doesn't matter; I just don't see it as the killer ap of the Wii.

People have saying the killer ap is WiiSports. If that's true... how tragic. But believable because I assume it would be a game that sells well and actually use the controls of the Wii. Not a Gamecube controller.

Load the Homebrew channel, install SNES9x, win!

Or install SENS9x on your computer, connect the Wiimote via Blutooth adapter, and success! Although there are probably Blutooth game controllers that are infinitely better, the Wiimote is pretty cool for NES ROMS. I even used it as a Powerpoint presentation slide changer for class. :awesome:

Playing HL2 with the Wii controls is pretty cool. As a pointing device, it is fairly competent. Not sure about the motion controls.

A lot of times I'd rather play games on my couch and the TV than sitting at a desk.

It's ok, if its anything all Nintendo's other games they'll spend the next 20 years remaking it over and over agaun and people will still buy it.
nope.

Going to disagree, here. I "acquired" the japanese version a month before it came out, we had a few parties where everyone played it, we got all the characters except for toon link, and then we bought the american version when it came out and never even opened the box.

It was the exact same game, with a few more characters and slightly different item/stages. There were things I liked, definitely, but it was more like an expansion pack than a whole new game. It captured our attention for a bit, but when the novelty of the final smashes wore off... there was nothing else new to keep our attention.

Online play WOULD have made it the killer app. Unfortunately, Nintendo botched it.

Yeah, the online play was especially terrible. It suffers from Steel Battalion Syndrome - whereby the game was designed for Japanese gamers on their tiny island and OC-12s and barely functions in, - shall we say - real-world conditions.
2008-07-30, 9:25 AM #21
Not to mention Nintendo doesn't want you to make friends over the internet. For every 2 kids that play the game, there is a Wii-playing Micheal Jackson on the other end.

I found Zsnes to be made of much more win.

Also install Project 64, most 64 games run like a dream on it, and it will bring back tons of memories of your favorite 5 (also the only 5 worth playing) N64 games.

Yeah except this is a thread about the Wii. As far as I know, SNES9x is the only emulator for Wii.
2008-07-30, 10:48 AM #24
OH it emulates ON the wii. I thought they were just talking about playing an emulator as opposed to playing a wii. Or are you saying it emulates Wii games o.0

I'm saying you can put SNES9x onto your Wii and play any SNES game you desire.
2008-07-30, 11:50 AM #26
If all you use your Wii for is playing SNES games it's definitely not worth having one. Better to get an Xbox 1 and mod it, or something.

I'm with Jon, if I could go back I wouldn't have gotten one. I sold mine a couple of days ago, my friend was giving it to his girlfriend for her birthday.

He's right though, ZSNES blows everything else away...

To my recollection, SNES9x had issues playing games like MarioRPG and Chrono Trigger due to layering issues.

KOP - Perhaps on an older version? I've played both of those and haven't noticed any problems.

But yeah, on PC I would choose ZSNES first.

Maybe a decade ago. It's been fine for at least 5 years now, I've been playing SMRPG/CT on it since high school.

I admit that taking the wii to work and playing brawl in the break room was awesome. I wouldn't dream of doing something like that with the 360.

But I haven't actually hooked it back up again since I brought it home...

Wii is the ultimate party console.
People that never ever game enjoy the wii.
Nothing like getting a bunch of mates around, having a few drinks and playing wii sports.
Wii sports isn't all of course, I've found heaps of fun games on the wii, but wii sports alone proved it was worth the price of the console.

My xbox 360 on the other hand... I don't think that was worth it, most of the games on it I'd rather get on pc.

Agreed.
A friend of mine has a Wii and whenever we get together or party, all we do is play on her Wii. My 360 has become more of a glorified DVD player/Media center extender at the moment (but hopefully that will change when i get a HD tv since right now all I have is a 15in CRT or my 19in Monitor that I can use it on)

I couldn't see myself playing a Wii without a bunch of people to play it with. :/

get an old xbox for $60, softmod it, and play nes, snes, n64, psx, and probably other stuff on it.

oh you can play all your divx stuffs from your pc over ethernet too.

and watch youtube and stuff.

and it has a web browser.

did i mention $60?
gbk is 50 probably

I'd have to say yea. I really enjoyed Brawl, Metroid Prime 3, and Mario Galaxy. Wii Sports is still fun when there's a crowd. And of course Brawl get togethers are a blast.

I can't say the same for my 360 though. I really just can't get into it. The only game I really want (or have wanted) is Ninja Gaiden 2. I do, however, love some features of the system. My entire DVD collection is now converted, and I can watch all of my movies and TV shows without having to sort through em :D.

Yup. It's a shame to. Fighting games, especially one as frantic as Brawl, just don't work very well online. Wait, didn't I predict this at one point and was called an idiot? Hmm...
2008-07-31, 3:56 AM #39
Brawl would've worked fantastic online, if they didn't make it so you may as well be playing against bots.
The potential was there for Smash Online to be awesome, if you had said that prediction before they announced all the restrictions on it I would've called you an idiot too

I wish I'd never got a Wii, the controls were just a fad and are only now being adapted to work how they should have in the first place.

And as for SSB..... I have one thing to say
