Wondering if my Wii was worth it

Zero Punctuation is hardly fair, as he doesn't like any multi-player games.

Latency on modern connections is good enough that there's no reason you couldn't have an online fighting game. The problem is Nintendo sucks and they couldn't do it.

mmmm... no, he pretty much echoed my thoughts on the matter quite well.

I picked up my copy and got together with a bunch of people on release day. Everything decent was locked, and for some reason the dull tedium of subspace emissary was amplified, perhaps through some dark art, by the fact that there were 8 people in the room. They could have, at least, made Subspace Emissary a 4-player extravaganza but I don't think the developers actually played it.

You DO know you didn't have to play Subspace Emissary to unlock any characters/stages, right? It was simply the fastest way to do so.

Either way, I genuinely enjoyed it, it was a far better offering than previous single player modes, and definitely better than the single player you find in other fighting games.

I didn't. Put me to sleep like 2 hours in. Fighting game mechanics never seem to translate well into an adventure mode setting. It may have been better than most other fighting game story modes... but that's not saying much.

No, I just find it rather unfair that no one complains about, say, SC4's single player when it's far worse than SSB:B's offering.
2008-07-31, 9:07 AM #48
Well, that's assuming if people actually liked Soul Caliber 4. Judging from some posts, Massassi seem jaded toward that game as well.

Perfect example : Dead or Alive 4. It handles lag the way a fighting game should.
2008-07-31, 1:42 PM #50
My main problems with fighting games online is that the internet itself is just unpredictable. Brawl works fine at some points, but the occasional lag spike which happens with every games is enough to turn me off from it.

But back on topic I do think the Wii has been worth it for me. Three games I've had a lot of fun with, but I admit that's pretty low. But by comparison, there really hasn't been anything other than NG2 that interests me on the 360 so I guess that's why I can consider my Wii satisfying. I just think gaming in general has gotten really, really stale.

Not from what I heard. Everyone complained about the lag in that game. And it looks like SF2 Turbo HD is having the same issues.

None of the consoles have been that great this generation. The Wii has only a few good games, PS3 only has MGS4, and most of the good 360 titles are also on the PC.

I concur. Let's all just agree that gaming in general has gone downhill and everything is a joke. Nothing but hype, broken promises and waiting 6 months to play a 6 hour game. And that the raging fanboyism of this generation is the worst seen in years.

I totally agree, gaming has been savaged recently with alot of dross.

Theres the odd decent item in a sea of mediocre crap, but otherwise its mostly meh.

Beginning to fear that TFU will be crap....

I don't know what you guys are going on about, Portal and TF2 were and still are amazing games.

Starcraft 2 will be the gem that will welcome in a new era in gaming history.

An era where all game companies will stop producing games, because SC2 will be perfect.

nope.

Somewhat Wii-related question, but I see Manhunt 2 has now got a release date for PS2, PSP and Wii. What about Xbox 360 (and PS3)? Anyone know anything concerning this?

No one's arguing that the PC doesn't have good games. The 360 version of TF2 has had no updates. No Medic or Pyro achievements, Soldiers still carry 40 rockets, and the old map exploits still exist. Microsoft wants to charge money for the updates, but Valve says they should be free.

about the online thing, you do realize that it is also about making the online thing able to be kept for free. After all, if they had things like text and voice chat, the bandwidth cost would increase A WHOLE LOT, which would mean that they would probably have to charge for using it.

I can't help feel TFU is going to be a clone of hack-n-slash games such as Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, or prehaps even Dynasty Warriors with the added element of the Force. While it may not ultimately doom the game, it doesn't reinforce any idea that LucasArts can come up with something innovative. Despite what the developers have said, the new technology that TFU likes to jerk itself over seems to serve only an aesthetic purpose. Thus all the time to program how wood would realistically break seems for not when cutting down trees would not provide any unique gameplay addition.

Good thing I've set my expectations so low that if TFU comes to being anywhere decent, I would be pleasantly surprised. And if it comes to KotOR good, I would blow my mind. But if it sucks like a wet donkey, well, doesn't really offend me.

I hope LEC licenses their engine so someone can make a real game.

Wii is a cancer in the body of the game industry. Do you want to support cancer, or do you want to support things that eliminate cancerous cells from the body, such as PCs?
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

Or how about cures that are specifically engineered to certain purposes... like consoles? PCs are more generic antibiotics that disease (games) becomes to increasingly resistant to, until the antibiotics are rendered useless and obsolete.

I didn't say it didn't lag. I said it handled it properly. Instead of skipping, the entire game goes down, so it remains precise. Brawl uses some sort of client-side prediction, like a shooter, so in laggy games your opponent isn't always where they appear to be.

Uhm, are we playing the same game?

When I play brawl and it lags, the whole thing slows down. It doesn't skip at all. And a hit still counts as a hit even in this slow motion mode, I've never seen hits miss, or other weird things.

MALFORMED ID

On another note, I'm about to go out and buy Chocobo's Dungeon because I haven't played a solid RPG since Golden Sun (not because there haven't been any but because I haven't been following them). I'm hoping it won't disappoint.

Has anyone played Zack and Wiki? I heard that was pretty good, too.

I also briefly played Mario Kart and thought it was awesome. The wheel gimmick felt surprisingly natural and was great.
