Alcohol Recommendations?
2008-08-08, 12:25 PM #1
I'm recently 21 (as in last week). I've had some experience drinking before, but I feel now that I am able to go up to the store and buy alcohol of my own, it's easier for me to try new things.

I know we had a thread like this recently, but I'm looking for more than just beer recommendations (although those are appreciated). I have a shaker for cocktails, but there's a ton of cocktail ingredients on the web. What are some good cocktails/mixed drinks? Please definitely feel free to recommend particular brands for the ingredients on those too!

This is a personal recipe of mine, but I'll share it. I call it "Vitamin D."

Fill glass with ice.
2½ oz Captain Morgan Silver Rum
1 oz Triple Sec
1 oz Peach Schnapps
½ oz Grenadine
½ oz Lime Juice
Fill with Sprite

Stir, garnish with a cherry, and tackle drunk *****es.

I'm boring, I pretty much just mix things with coke. I'm a rum fan.

Captain Morgan spiced with ginger ale is really good.

The Absinthe Cocktail is my new best friend, but it's quite pricey.

1 1/3 oz. Absinthe
1/3 oz. Curacao, blue
1/3 oz. Lime Juice
1 1/3 oz. Red Bull

I'd just go with a regular Red Bull and Mid-grade Vodka if you're not willing to shell out the cash. These are some of the only mixed drinks I like. Otherwise its straight newcastle/killians.

To get some use out of the shaker, try a martini. Pour a little dry vermouth into a martini glass, swirl until you've coated the inside of the glass, pour it out, shake gin with ice ("bruise the gin" my ***), strain into glass. Garnish with an olive or a lemon twist if you like. Not for everyone, but worth a try. You can also try it with more vermouth if it's too dry. I'm no connoisseur, but I've usually had it with Martini & Rossi vermouth and Bombay Sapphire gin.

The Irish car bomb (shot of Jameson and Baileys dropped into a glass of Guinness) is fun, but it's more for group drinking.

Simpler mixed drinks I enjoy are rum/coke, whiskey/coke, tequila/coke and SoCo/Red Bull.

Also I can recommend beers all day, but it'd help to know what you've liked and what you haven't. :)

As far as beer goes, I'm still acquiring a taste (it gets better every day) and I've not tried a whole lot... I like Boulevard Wheat (not sure if that's common outside the KC area though) and Killians Irish Red. There's whole categories of beers that I've not tried yet though.

Kirby--isn't absinthe illegal in the US? Or is there a legal version of it? I guess I could give that a shot if I'm ever in Europe though.
2008-08-08, 3:07 PM #15
If you like Red I just got this stuff called O'Haras Irish Red or something like that. Very good

It's sketchy, but not exactly illegal. They're reversing many of the absolutely retarded laws related to Absinthe, and a lot of new brands are hitting America. There's currently two which are approved by the Surgeon General (? Whoever okays alcohol).

A lot of bars I've been to stock some older absinthe from before it was illegal or foreign absinthes that they've imported, and these are NOT high end bars. The more classy you get, the much more likely they've got absinthe. You can buy the 2 brands that are sold widely online and at some higher class local wine distributors, but I'd call in advance. The absinthe 'highs' I've been on are some of my most artistic/poetic/influencial, and I highly encourage exclusively absinthe induced alcoholism for artistic motivation.

Absinthe is completely illegal still federally. Which is why I suggest you stop being a pussy and start drinking Jack Daniels straight.

Jack Daniels is to whiskey as Budweiser is to beer.

I don't like whiskey much at all, but Johnnie Walker is good.

For rum, try Sailor Jerry's Spiced Rum. It's so much better than Captain Morgan's, it's not funny. It's not very expensive either.

For gin, Bombay Sapphire is excellent for martinis, and Tanqueray is good for everything.

For vodka, I like Skyy, I think it's just about as good as more expensive vodkas for much less.

For tequila, I like Silver Xalixco (pronounced ha-lees-co, Old Spanish spelling). It's very good for the price, as tequila seems to get ridiculously expensive very quickly.

Oh, then there's beer.

Anything from these breweries is a pretty good bet:

Great Lakes Brewery (might not be in your area)
Ommegang
Unibroue
Leffe
Dogfish Head

Wheat beers are excellent. These are things like Ommegang Witte, Unibroue Blanche de Chambly, Hoegaarden and Blue Moon.

Things like Sam Adams or Saranac are nice and also cheap. They are not great, but good.

For beer on the ultimate cheap, Genessee Cream Ale is about the best I've had. It's about as cheap as Keystone but...almost kind of good. It's bland, yes, but not offensive like other cheap beers. It has a smooth, creamy taste that's actually pleasant.

Ommegang is mighty tasty. Same with Leffe and Dogfish head.
Youngs double chocolate stout is yum.

Sam Adams seasonal beers I like a lot. Saranac not so much.

And you subjected yourself to Genessee? I heard that was only good from the brewery

If you're going to go with bourbon & don't want the cheap stuff (e.g. Jim Beam or Jack Daniels), go with Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, Knob Creek, Maker's Mark or Woodford Reserve. The best bourbon is of course made in my home state of Kentucky.

I'll drink just about anything if someone is buying me a drink. However, if I'm paying, I usually stick to whiskey & coke or rum & coke. If I'm drinking beer it's usually Amstel, Blue Moon or Budweiser.
? :)

My grandfather got me turned on to the Manhattan. It's rye, sweet vermouth, and bitters (I've only tried Jager and Alpenbitter, but any will do). I'm not one for exact measurements, so just mix the rye and vermouth to your desired sweetness, add a dash of bitters, and pour it over ice. If you order it at a bar, it will come garnished with a cherry, but I can't be bothered. If you're not accustomed to high octane beverages, the Manhattan might feel like a punch in the face at first, but I found it very easy to get used to, and quite enjoyable.

Tanqueray gin with Seagram's Tonic, it's the only thing worth drinking.

This.

For beers, I prefer Killian's and various Sam Adams. I don't like wheat beers at all, I prefer darker stuff.

Also not a fan of Jack, or whiskey sours for that matter.

Mixing vodka gets me in trouble, so atm I'm drinking mostly whiskey or bourbon. Have yet to settle in on a specific type.

I am pretty sure this is not possible for any human being.

This fall you'll have to try my three favorite wheat beers: Ommegang Witte, Unibroue Blanch de Chambly and Great Lakes' Holy Moses White Ale.

Also I had an Ommegang porter at MacGregor's several months ago. It was quite nice. It was like Guinness done right. :awesome:

I don't understand people who drink rum and coke. Rum (especially Bardenay's) and rootbeer on the other hand...

Snake bites are decent, just Yukon Jack and lime juice.

I'm not sure where you live, but if you can find any beers from the North Coast, Anderson Valley, or Rogue breweries I'd suggest you try your favorite style by them. Any of you who live on the west coast and haven't tried anything from North Coast, you should kindly kick yourself in the throat (their Brother Thelonious is the best abbey I've tried, and Old Rasputin is my favorite stout).
