Anyone notice the war in Georgia?
2008-08-11, 9:30 AM #1
The ex-Soviet Georgia, that is. Seems like someone in Moscow misses the USSR - the Russian "peacekeepers" are advancing on the Georgian capital.

I'm very interested in seeing how everyone's gonna let Russia get away with this.

And by "very" I really mean "at least Matlock's safe".

They are letting em get away with because

a) The UN Is a collosal waste of space.

b) No one bar the US or possibly (and even I have some doubt of this) the UK has the balls to remotely do ANYTHING.

c)The russians would probably cite "well you invaded iraq illegally" as a reason, despite the fact that it really isnt.

I've been waiting for this to happen ever since I read about THIS.

Basically, A Russian Mig-29 was observed taking off from an airbase in Abkhazia (The region currently held by the breakaway group who want to re-join Russia) and shooting down a unmanned Georgian drone in Georgian airspace.

I remember that. Blatant.

I knew russia was going to start pulling **** again. Who knows what's going to happen or who is in the right. It's tough to tell nowadays, especially as uninformed as I am.

You fail to realize that this was all predicted in a prophecy from 2001

Seriously though, it gets no news coverage since most of the world's media is busy fapping themselves raw to the glory of communist china.

Putin has claimed that there is genocide going on in Georgia, but that seems a bit far fetched especially given the source. I mean Georgia isn't exactly known for it's stability, I don't know what they are trying to accomplish here other than a land grab.

I'll just post what I posted on another forum I go to.

Quote:
I'm not a big fan of Russia, but I'm with them on this one. Georgia is the one that attacked first and they specifically admitted to timing it with the Olympics. Their President even said as much. South Ossentia has been under the protection of Russia since the early 90s(Russia gave the Ossentians citizenship as well). Russia has every right to retaliate and personally, I think they should send the Georgian government a message saying "Get out of Ossentia in 24 hours or we're taking your capital."

Frankly, the Georgian government disgusts me. They had to have known their invasion would not go unanswered. Basically what they're doing is smacking Ossentia with a bat and when their big brother Russia comes to defend them(who has always wanted to beat the hell out of Georgia anyway, just never had a good justification), the Georgians run behind the US, hoping the US sticks up for them and doesn't let Russia pummel the hell out of them. The sad thing is, we'll be duped by this whole thing too. Because Georgia has 2,000 troops in Iraq, the US will stand up for Georgia instead of rightfully condemning them.

However, there isn't a whole lot the US can do besides political pressure. IMO, Russia should just give the US the bird and keep pushing until the Georgians back off.

it's Ossetia

but you're correct. The Georgians have viewed Ossetia as their land since the Byzantine era, and have either been invading it or finding ways to Georgianize its populace ever since

Just want to point something out.....

Quote:
A Georgian National Security Council official said the document signed by Saakashvili called for an unconditional cease-fire, a non-use of force agreement, a withdrawal of Russian troops from Georgian territory, including the South Ossetia region[/b], and provisions for international peacekeeping and mediation.

Are you kidding me? Is he really that stupid to think Russia would accept that kind of treaty? Or is he purposely making a peace treaty he knows the Russians will find unacceptable just so he can get on his soap box in the UN and cry "We tried to make peace, but those evil bloodthirsty Russians just won't hear of it!"?

I've found it rather funny hearing the US complain and accuse Russia of going after regime change.

The fact that one side is a pathetic loser doesn't mean the other isn't as well. Either way the ones getting killed are the plain old everyday people like you and me who have nothing to do with policy making or declarations of war and just happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

I don't know what country those of you who say the media isn't covering this come from, but it has been all over CNN. Sure, it's not as detailed as I'd like it to be, but it's probably a logistical nightmare due to the evacuations, etc.
? :)

I haven't watched much the last two days, but as of Friday, Saturday, and early Sunday afternoon, there was nothing on CNN or NBC about it besides a mention that it had happened.

CNN was the most on the ball though, on the 8th they had a speech by the Georgian president. As of tonight NBC has a man who is supposedly in Georgia.

Up until tonight I haven't seen anything about it, but I missed the sunday evening news due to work.

It appears Medvedev has stopped Russian advances, and called for a cease-fire. Looks like it could be over faster than it started, thankfully.

I remember seeing on the news about some pageant they hold for female Russian prisons. That picture and from what I saw of that pageant, supports your statement.

Well, modern Russia is just massively corrupt; they haven't done too much. But if you are also referring the the USSR, you're smoking crack.

magna has my vote for God of the Universe

Evidently with the cease fire, Russia has still been hitting military targets. Did the generals not get the memo or something?

Also, evidently some people(one person in particular that shall remain nameless) have been saying this is all about oil, reporting that Russia hit Georgia's pipelines that aren't even close to Ossetia. The British company that owns the pipelines has reported that there is no evident damage to their pipelines at this point. ****ing tools.

I'm pretty sure the Georgian government is just using that ceasefire as a tool to gain sympathy from the larger countries like was said above. "But we TRIED to make peace!". the russians won't settle for anything less then a full withdrawl of georgian military, looks like they started it and Russia intends to finish it.
