The Dark Knight bombs in Japan
2008-08-30, 1:43 PM #1
Quote:
After its second week in theatres, the movie is struggling at the box office in Japan, earning just $8.7 million thus far — almost $6 million less than what it earned in the smaller Korean market. To be fair, some of the movie’s thunder may have been stolen by the latest Hayao Miyazaki animated blockbuster Ponyo on the Cliff, which has tallied a staggering $93.2 million in its first four weeks. However, the numbers are even lower than Batman Begins, which made $14 million in its opening weekend in Japan.

Quote:
Critic Chika Minagawa offers some possible explanations for why The Dark Knight hasn’t caught on in Japan:

“The story is very pessimistic. It has a dark and gloomy texture that Japanese movie fans do not find appealing in a ‘comic hero’ film… Japanese movie fans expect such films to be fun and action packed, for the hero to be attractive, for the villain to be loud and outrageous, and for the movie itself to be easy to understand and light.”

I guess that would explain the writing and story for most Japanese RPGs and anime. Though based on what the critic said, this means the Japanese would consider the Schmaucher Batmans the best of the franchise?

Oh and Christian Bale is not attractive enough for the Japanese? Oh wait nevermind, I forgot; he looks like a guy.

With that quote, one would think that American audiences would not have liked TDK either.

Its Japan.

Who cares?
nope.
2008-08-30, 2:21 PM #5
Its based on an american comic. Why would they really care? Its just like expecting Princess Mononoke to be a huge hit over here, which it wasnt.

Maybe they're smart enough to see all of the pro-Bush and American anti-terrorisism propaganda and dislike it for that.

If you think the film was pro-Bush you must have left a while before the end. And being against terrorism... isn't that just a no-brainer?

On the flip side, alot of direct-from-Japan movies bomb in American theaters.

How odd. I was too busy enjoying the movie to notice if it had a political stance.

Bush or Batman?

2008-08-30, 6:19 PM #17
This thread kind of not really reminds me of something Michael Cain said a while ago... "The USA sees itself as Superman, whilst the rest of the world tends to see the USA, as Batman."

That's a pretty good quote.

Batman could very well have been GWB. Essentially hated for doing the right thing.

At least Batman had a singular goal: catch the Joker. And he had the foresight to stop after he was done. After using it, the surveillance was destroyed by Lucius entering his name. And I think everyone was intended to side with Lucius' p.o.v. GWB has declared war on a word and concept, not a specific body of people.

But it is all beside the point. The writer's even said that the whole idea was written well before the Bush administration actively admitted to surveillance of its citizens.

The Batman symbol is shaped like "W" I think.

Did it occur to the writer that if the Batman symbol is shaped like a W, then it may have been shaped like one LONG BEFORE Bush was elected?

I'm not familiar with the comics or older movies so I can't say for sure.

But the 2005 Batman Begins had the same logo. Was that movie also a commentary on W? Hmm?

It's not meant to be taken literal. It is a coincidence but ironic when considering the rest of the article.

I think that relating the batman movies to politics is absolutely ****ing retarded.

It would be amazing to have a massassi thread that didn't involve political agenda for once.

It's retarted to not notice the obvious allusions to current politics in the latest Batman movie.

The batman logo being shaped in a pseudo W fashion is in no way ironic

one can notice allusions to current politics in anything if they look for and invent enough retarded connections

People thought V for Vendetta was anti-Bush too, but it was based off a different political administration... decades ago... in a different country...

People still pay attention to what Wookie06 says?

Oh well, I guess the lack of that... Mexican ... has to be filled somehow.

As for V for Vendetta, I remember some comic book nerds sweating about how the movie wasn't like the comic book at all due to the main character being a freedom fighter instead of totally insane. Oh poo.

People don't resurrect or mold old mediums because they see relevance to current situations. No, that's NEVER happened.
