I'd rather just watch a movie and enjoy it.

Is everyone disagreeing with Wookie just because he's Wookie? Or do you actually think that something like Batman's sonar cellphone thing has no resonance with current political/cultural issues?

The movie seemed to be working awfully hard to make itself "relevant"... seemed really contrived to me.
2008-08-31, 11:12 AM #47
No, because I agree with wookie on some of his points in other threads, but I just think that trying to relate politics to an action movie is retarded.

Thats like relating christianity to the matrix. C'mon now.

Or we could just understand that what they did with the cellphones is quite impossible. First, cell phones don't have speakers that can emit high-frequency sounds like that. Second, they aren't directional speakers. Third, they don't have directional microphones. Fourth, the resolution of a cell phone's GPS is not fine enough.

Also.

Agent Smith is Jesus, not Neo. Just FYI.

The thing with The Dark Knight was they managed to craft an action drama with reasonable relationships to current events and did it in a way that didn't overtly criticize current American policy. Essentially, they praised it. The bad guys were bad. There wasn't any effort to explain why they were bad. In fact they mocked that by showing the Joker giving different explanations for his scars. Batman tortured, crossed international boundaries, spied on people and you don't come out of it thinking he's the villain. Now, of course these concepts are consistent with the most popular comic depictions of the Bat but rarely would we see that type of depiction make it to the big screen and then the obvious allusions to current events dismissed, ignored, or overlooked.

Disagreeing with my points above is acceptable but to outright dismiss them is retarted. Just a little self-depricating humor there. Typos and mis-edits from me are quite regular as I am usually beating back my two and a half year old while typing. Should have spell checked but it's funner the way it is!

That was to show that he was completely insane. Batman did the stuff hes always done. As usual, you're oblivious

Me too but, as a conservative, I usually have to just accept the fact that the average movie is going to take digs at America, conservatives, and Republicans. "Bush" fishing in the Hulk or asking for sweets in Transformers. A virtual liberal orgy-fest in John Q, etc. The Dark Knight embraces the same ideals that other movies mock and demonize. And it kicked ***.

It would be a better comparison if instead of going to China, Batman accidentally went to Japan and killed a bunch of people and then forged a document saying they were bad guys.

The multiple stories behind the scars originated with the graphic novel The Kiling Joke. In it the Joker's origin story is told, but near the end it's revealed that it probably isn't true.

I clearly addressed the topic he criticized me on and then he gave a trite answer to say I "did it wrong". So then with some frustration I quoted myself hoping he would make his criticism of my point more clear. Anything in that post pales in comparison with routine insulting treatment and comments many here have received at various times that go uncorrected here. Is this some example of selective admonishment or what?

My point EXACTLY.

Wookie sometimes your so far to the right your almost left. There isnt a conspiracy, agenda, or theory in everything. Take some things at face value for a change, please. I consider myself moderatly conservative, but I watch a movie for the action and plot. If you want to talk about horrible political agenda movies, lets talk Michael Moore or 9/11. But please.. not batman for gods sake.

Look, the point is that people find movies interesting when those movies deal with topics relevant to their lives. The sonar thing clearly deals with the same issues that people discuss wrt the Patriot Act. And it's suggested to the audience that what Batman did was right; judicious use of such power can be morally right. I don't see what's so hard to accept about that. The movie takes a stance on certain philosophical issues, and its stance seems to align with a basically Conservative mindset.

No one's suggesting that sonar cellphones are a strict allegory for the Patriot Act, just like it would be crazy to say that Gandalf is an allegory for Jesus. But to deny that Gandalf was created by a devout Christian in whose worldview resurrection was a central feature? Equally crazy.

(And of course the sonar cellphone thing was laughably stupid. Most things in action movies are, but for some reason usually nobody cares.)

I don't see any conspiracy in the movie. It relates well to current events and doesn't try to make any political points. I just think that since it does relate well to current events from a conservative and pro-American point of view, the Japanese may not like it. That's all.

From my understanding, most japanese adults do not watch anime at all. Westerners are pretty much keeping the anime market alive.
