Google Chrome (Google's new web browser)
2008-09-01, 3:25 PM #1
Here's the comic book thing that got leaked and clued the internet in: http://blogoscoped.com/google-chrome/

Here's Google's official announcement of the public Windows beta starting tomorrow: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/09/fresh-take-on-browser.html

DISCUSS

I myself am thrilled at the idea of being able to see plugins' and individual web pages' CPU and memory. I've been wanting something like that for Firefox extensions forever. The whole idea of each tab being a new process seems solid, except that there's a bit of overhead when you start a new process... but we'll see how it runs. It's one small step for man, one giant leap for Google.. towards world domination. Entirely non-evil and user-friendly world domination, mind you.

What's the story on extensibility? Firefox has done so well because of extensions.

Pfft. Word on the street is Chrome's extensions have their own extensions.

There's nothing about extensibility that I can see, other than the browser itself is open source. IF not in the beta, they'll want to do something eventually otherwise Firefox has a big edge in customization over it.

Spiffy. I'll have to try it.
woot!

One of the early frames refers to each "plugin" running on its own process. The process manager lets you see how much resources each plugin for each tab is taking.

The "plugins" are probably equivalent to firefox extensions.

Going to be about as successful as Google Messenger, you think?
2008-09-01, 8:50 PM #9
That's a terrible comparison. There were plented of stable, useful, easy to use and reliable messaging applications before google talk. But after many years there are no rocksolid/stable web browsers that are fast/clean/easy. If google hits a home run with this, it'll pretty much be a no brainer to use over firefox/IE.

I have to give them props of making a 38 page comic book for a browser. But why is it so boring. :(

Boring it may be to you ECHO, but for simple folk like me it's actually quite informative :)

I like it.

Posting from it right now. Pretty spiffy so far.

Edit: It's a bit bare-bones right now, though. I can't find options like managing history (read: not keeping a history) and such @_@

And omg. Middle-click does not allow me to drag-scroll through pages! ARRGH

Also, fullscreen for flash movies on Veoh are broken -- I can only see the upper-left portion of the video because it's super-zoomed in. Though that just might be because I'm using an HDTV and programs always screw up the resolution.

Middle-click and drag is a bit annoying.

And I don't like that I can't move the tab bar, but otherwise its spiffy.
nope.

I guess Incognito mode serves as Chrome's "privacy control" setting:

I don't see a way to view bookmarks other than showing the bookmark bar and then clicking "Other bookmarks". That's stupid, I've been hiding the bookmark bar since 1998.

No other problems with it so far, but until there's a portable version and a plugin for syncing bookmarks I'm sticking to FF.

this is so spiffy and fast

It's sort of annoying how I can't closed the browser window by clicking the blanket "X" button and instead have to individually close all the tabs.

How'd you get it? Nothing happens when I click the download button

Tried in both IE and firefox... Odd. Just the button depresses and the page says "done" in that space where it says stuff like that. No firewall or blockers or such.. hmm weird.

Well, it IS only in beta. I've already noticed some weird resizing issues when using GMail with an application shortcut.

One thing I noticed though, is that if you turn Aero on/off, you have to restart the browser for it to display properly. Just so you guys know.

It actually looks pretty nice in Aero, but I just can't stand the way other programs (coughmIRCcough) look with Aero on.

Yeah but I get that already in Safari in WebKit and Developer mode? Why do I need yet another Browser, its looks nice, but having Windows IE, Mac IE, Safari, Opera, and Safari Mac/PC on my Mac is more than enough, well then again another wont hurt too much!

If they can get some of my favorite plugins working, I'm absolutely ready to make the switch to chrome. It's so fast and slick. I can't import my firefox settings, though.

Yeah, I'm really annoyed that I don't have middle-click. URLs popping up at the bottom are annoying too.

I thought so too, just because I'm so used to decades of a little 'status bar' at the bottom, but I realised eventually that it is just unnecessary clutter on the screen. You only want to see it when it's actually doing something, but most of the time it isn't; Chrome frees up part of the screen, and together with the tabs on the top and the removal of that 'File - Edit - Help - etc' bar (that probably has a name?) you're left with a much sleeker interface.

It's odd and different and takes a little getting used to, but on the whole it is for the better. I think Chrome has a few updates to go before it's awesome (I find it occasionally struggles with streaming content), but it's not far off.
