So who's got Spores. Who's enjoying it? Is it as good as you expected?

I heard gameplay-wise, it does alot of things but doesn't do one thing well.

Also, from Wikipedia:

Quote:
Spore will be using a modified version of digital rights management (DRM) software SecuROM as copy prevention, which will require authentication upon installation and when online access is used. This system was announced after the originally planned system met opposition from the public, as it would have required authentication every ten days.[73] It was also announced that Spore will be playable without a disc after installation.[74] A disadvantage of this DRM software is that it does not allow one user to login to his/her Spore profile on another user's copy of the game, and that it has a limit of three installations. The installation limit is triggered each time a user changes certain pieces of hardware, reformats the computer, or installs/upgrades a new operating system.[75] Furthermore, when a user uninstalls Spore, the installation count is not reset.[76]

Seriously? Three?

I was looking forward to spore, but not anymore. I'm not getting it because of the installation limitations. I'd be glad to play on someone else's computer, but it's not touching mine.

I just beat the wireless version last night. (aka cellphone version)

It was good.

But it sucked because it stopped right when you get onto land and out of the "microscopic/small animal" phase.

That is beyond ludicrous. What the hell were the designers thinking? How in the bloody hell can you justify limiting the number of installations a LEGIT customer has available?

I could not think of a reason to justify spending 60$ on a game with such limits.

The real question is how can you all still be *****ing about this when it's so easy to circumvent.

As for the game, meh. It looks like it would be fun for a few hours and then become boring as you reach the point where having no narrative and no more new features to explore would ruin the experience.

If a game has copy protection I object to on ideological grounds, I don't pirate it. I don't buy it and circumvent it. I just don't buy it. They aren't getting my money, and I'm not contributing to their success in any way. **** them.

If jaywalking is against the law I don't bother going to work because hey there are all these ****ing roads to cross and I can't be asked to walk down to every ****ing intersection to cross the street.

That's silly.

Hell, most games have ONE installation limit a la CD Keys. That's like saying "I'm not buying counterstrike because only one person can play it at a time".

It's nice, but it's not technically out til sunday, so yeah.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and the inability to logon is stupid, but not unlike what a lot of MMOs do.

Ooh my bad. I figured it was out since Gamespy, Gamespot and IGN reviewed it.

That comparison doesn't even make sense.

Eh?

If you take CS and Steam, you can redownload the game and install it on any computer.

I assume there's more to this instead of "install it 3 times, your copy of the game is useless." This is for the profiles...?

That was the idea.

Because your reasoning didn't make any sense either.

Yes it does.

Oh, wait, you're Rob.

Right.
2008-09-04, 6:08 PM #19
No, it doesn't.

You aren't contributing to the success of a game if you don't buy it. And not buying it due to what is a minor inconvenience you can easily bypass with all your massive smarts is retarded.

He's already explained he's opposed to Spore's copy protection ideologically. Acting on your ideals makes you principled. Believing one thing and doing another leads to cognitive dissonance, which wears on you psychologically.

I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader to figure out which is better.

Wasn't there another game that came out (Bioshock maybe? not sure) that had install limits for its first year i think? Then they dropped it to unlimited but still has to have online verif.

Gah now I'm wrestling with EA's crap validation system. Its saying my cd key is invalid but waits til I try to login to tell me...

Gonna give it 24 hours and go for a refund. No games worth that much hassle.

no hassle here. just use the ea download manager and stop being whiny *****es.

Yeah. It was mildly entertaining, but the novelty wore off quickly. Definitely not living up to the hype at all.
2008-09-06, 10:53 AM #38
I don't get why it's getting such solid reviews.
2008-09-06, 11:36 AM #39
I may have totally called the whole "unimpressive" thing...but I don't remember. Meh. Also, I think that having to find parts is pretty lame and the space stage is entirely too well populated thus meaning that you probably spend more time fighting other civs in your dinky spaceship probably alone than actually exploring and all that sandboxy stuff we all wanted.
