Tell your friend that was the most pointless advert I've ever seen. I felt embarrassed for Bill.

Incomprehensible.

I heard that this was the 'ice breaker' for the campaign, ones in the future will actually be advertising something...

I don't know how, but it ended up eliciting a laugh from me. I think they're going with the "make it odd enough it sticks in your brain" theory.

Yeah, it obviously wasn't trying to sell anything about Vista. It was just fun. It'll be interesting to see what comes next.

Well if nothing else, at least they're trying something different.
2008-09-07, 3:39 AM #14
I like it. It's definately working as an advertisment- people are watching it repeatedly in an attempt to understand it.

It depends on what you consider "working" as an advertisement. I say it doesn't work if people watch it over and over, it works if they buy Vista after watching it.

2008-09-07, 12:08 PM #16
I don't even think its direct goal is to sell Vista copies, but just to give Microsoft more of a lighthearted image. It's got a couple of familiar faces acting like semi-normal people, having a very lighthearted encounter. It's a different approach from Apple's aggressive anti-PC marketing, kind of like how Pepsi always puts down coke in their ads, and Coke's ads are all happy happy joy joy.

You hit the nail on the head. This is exactly what they're trying to accomplish and they're going about it in a very intelligent way.

The purpose of advertisement, contrary to popular belief, is to get a brand name floating around in your head. Not to sell copies. It's making people aware so the next time they have problems with whatever it is they're currently using (or not using) then the first thought that comes to mind is "I need 'blah'" where blah is the advertised product.

Notice that people who advertise to compete, or to try and sell directly, generally fail, with a few given exceptions (most notably Apple).

I would agree with that as a general rule, but from what I had read Microsoft openly said they were directly going to rebutt the Apple campaigns. If you've watched any of them you of course know Apple goes to great lengths to tear down specific features. If I'm watching one of those ads, and then these new Vista ads, I'm probably going to more influenced by the one that actually talks about something "substantive" as opposed to a delicious Mexican dish/shoe.

This sort of ad reminds me of this which I once saw on TV...

They said they were going to COMBAT them, not rebut necessarily. Combating them only requires something which pushes their product as something that isn't as horrible as Apple makes it out to be--which it's not.

I never liked Apple in the first place, but their campaign pisses me off. What a bunch of jerks. God I hate that crap. Quizno's, too. Makes me hate those companies.

Methinks they should fire their advertisers and invest some more in their product.

Now THIS is a cool commercial:

2008-09-07, 10:25 PM #26
I dont think you understand. Its supposed to grab peoples attention. WIth more commercials on the way, i assume they will continue to revitalize Microsofts image.

Hell, apples commercials dont sell a product. They just make fun of another one :p

Um. Apple turns profit because of their advertisers. The products themselves aren't anything incredibly special.

The tiger woods commercial IS awesome. I wonder how many times they had to fling that ball to make it go in, or if they CGed it.

No, he's right. If you put an Apple product side by side with a superior product, most people would still buy the Apple product.

Apple does make many nice products, but their ads are their primary means of producing sales, not the quality of the products themselves.

In my scenario, we get a better product.

In your scenario, we get nothing.

I'm not considering what is best for you and me. If you were Apple, you definitely wouldn't fire your own advertisers.

Define "superior". Apple has very good warranties, very good customer service, very robust OSes, etc. If you're talking pure hardware, that's an incomplete comparison. A lot of people buy Apple products because they just work. And if they don't, Applecare, 99% of the time, will fix it for you (and applecare is cheap as ****).

Now, I'm not saying mac apps don't crash--I've had plenty of experience with that myself. But there's no fussing, no viruses, no security pains, and a lot of ease of use to the OS that you just don't get with any version of Windows (especially Vista, christ).

Apple's service is pathetic. Not only are their reps useless, but Apple is notorious for suing their own customers in order to shut them up about problems with their products

Really? Because everyone I know who has applecare has nothing but GLOWING reviews about it, and I'd like to hear something different. I've heard of them giving people a new iPod for their 4th gen because it broke--that's 2+ years out of warranty. New macbooks because they broke over a year out of warranty.

Sounds like the kind of customer service I'd want.
