Building a computer for the first time, need some advice.

As I said, the last time I checked the price was higher. So basically you're telling me that the Intel's higher price is worth every penny because they are that much faster?

Good thing I didn't build my PC yet.

Yes, that's what we've been trying to beat through your skull this entire thread.

heh, then you should have just said that lol

Uhhh xzero.... Please don't tell me you actually shop at TD. They are ****ing garbage in Canada. They are nothing but a whole bunch of scammers and thieves. Their prices are so inflated its not even funny.

As a fellow Canadian, let me do you a favour..... shop here:

www.ncix.com
www.canadacomputers.com
www.infonec.com

And that e6550 you posted at TD.... PLEASE!

For a cheaper price I can get a Q6600 for $195 at Canada Computers... AND I didn't even start price hunting yet.

So seriously.... dont blame Canada for ****ty prices just because you're too ignorant to shop at the right places.

Oh, and if you are really that tight on a budget, go with the E4500http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=016106&cid=CPU.84. OC this pupply to 3.4 and it will be running with the Q6600 @ stock in games. So yeah, you are pretty much wasting money for considering anything else but intel this time around.

Too much money for a heatsink and fan if you ask me. The stock fan should be more than enough if your case has enough fans to go with it.

I would recommened at least a 9800 gx2, they are cheaper now and are almost top of the line (still are if you game, no game requires a card better than that, not even crysis.). I currently have the evga 9800 gx2 ssc which rocks.

Id go with windows xp because vista just sucks balls still. Worst memory hogging, blue screen of death, system freezing, crashing, operating system since windows me; and if microsoft repeats what they did with xp its gonna take forever for them to fix it.

Edit: Also I noticed the board you picked doesn't have ddr3 ram compatibility. ddr3 is some good stuff. I would highly recommended giving it a shot if you want to "try something new" as you mentioned in another post hehe.

But you will have to deal with the headache with 2 cards with that 9800 gx2. Perhaps even some microstuttering depending on the person.

silent_killa, I don't shop at TD. It's the only computer place I know of besides PCCanada, and I've only browsed through the sites, customizing fantasy computers lol. Thanks for posting the other sites though, I'll look through them for sure :)

Figures Tiger Direct's CPU prices were too high. Damn you TD. Also, that CPU is looking mighty fine, how much better then my current one is it? (AMD Athlon x2 4200+, 2.2GHz). I'm curious.

I have had no problems with Vista and I've had it for nearly a year. Memory Hog? Not really. BSOD? Nope. System Freezing? Got it more on XP then Vista. Crashing? Rarely.

Viruses? Nowhere near as bad as XP. No joke, I was in xp for 5 minutes (dual boot) and I got a desktop virus that took my taskbar and the rest. I just said "screw this" and went back to Vista. Couldn't be happier. I'm hoping you used the OS before making those statements ;)

DDR3 is newer stuff so expect to be paying out the *** for it. (Note: This has no valid support besides assumptions, based off other hardware history (video cards, CPUs, etc.)

A good DDR2 RAM at 1060 is definitely still great. I've never seen anyone use DDR3, but I'm thinking: If you have the money, go for it.

DDR3 isn't much faster than DDR2. Which isn't that much faster than DDR1.

So, so much wrong with this post.

1) XP is outdated and dying. Go Vista. It's not nearly as bad or unstable as he's saying. Don't listen to him about this. Actually, don't listen to him about anything.

2) The 9800GX2 is such a ****ing waste of cash it's not even funny. 4850 at the least, 4870 for mid-range budget, 280 if you're feelin rich.

3) DDR3 still isn't where it needs to be. Unless you plan on going i7 it's not even worth considering (i7 requires DDR3).

Besides the hsf I don't think a single thing in your post is right.
