Lava Taco
2008-09-18, 2:25 PM #1
I recently had the opportunity to sample Taco Bell's new Lava Taco. You've probably seen the commercial where the guy turns red and has smoke coming out of his ears - if only. People are WIMPS.

I got this taco, and I took a bite of it, and then I took it back up to the counter because I thought they hadn't put any 'lava sauce' on it. Turns out it was drenched in it. It didn't even register. It wasn't hot, it wasn't mild, it wasn't ANYTHING. I put four packets of their hot sauce on it, and it still wasn't hot. So the manager gave me a little cup of lava sauce that I drank right in front of him, and he's staring at me like I'm crazy, expecting me to catch fire or something.

Now I'm starting to wonder just how hot the hot sauce I use at home (Which I actually find mildly hot) is to other people.

I used to work in a Mexican restaurant. People really don't understand "hot." If you ask for hot salsa, don't come back complaining that it's too hot.

It happened to me once at a Mexican restaurant too. Me : Excuse me waitress, I asked for hot salsa, not mild. Waitress : Uhh... that is the hot salsa.

Maybe you should stop having crap tastebuds.
nope.

i didn't find the lava taco to be that hot either, but i can't say i've really had a problem with spicy food not being spicy enough before. I just think the lava taco isn't all that its cracked up to be.
yay for not posting much ever

that story never happened

One time I made some really really spicy sauce, but nobody so far has had the balls to try it.

Still damn good though

Probably because they know you have PURE CAPSAICIN.
nope.
2008-09-18, 4:05 PM #15
Protip: if your hot sauce has more capsaicin than found in mace, YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG.

Anyway, I love really, really hot stuff. I usually order "wild" wings from Buffalo Wild Wings, which is the 2nd highest level they have. I've eaten their highest, "Blazin'", but didn't care for it. It wasn't so much the heat as much as it was the flavor, it tastes like cardboard. I find that "ridiculously hot" hot sauces all seem to share in this. But "wild" level is perfect, it's pretty damn hot but still full of flavor.

Yum.

This.

I have a friend that worked in Taco Bell. He had some stories that made me never eat there again.

To this day I haven't eaten at Taco Bell. Been about three years now.

Hot sauce is about flavor, not Scoville rating.

i thought the volcano taco is quite hot by taco bell standards... the "lava sauce" they put in it is hotter than their fire sauce... but it's still quite weak

and emon is right... it is the major failing of just about every "extreme" hot sauce out there... they go for "i dare you to try this" hot and forget about flavor
eat right, exercise, die anyway

Taco Bell blows.

I'm fortunate to live in Phoenix where there's fast food mexican all over the place.

taco bell sauce is water, tomato flavored water and mild.

The lava taco is a joke to those of us with an extreme taste for the spicy side of life =].

had that recently for the first time. that stuff is ****in good. i also recommend cholula hot sauce.
2008-09-18, 7:38 PM #30
Franks Red Hot is awesome for chili in general. It's not very hot at all, but it has tons and tons of flavor. Cholula is perfect for tacos, it's a bit more spicy, spicier than anything Taco Bell hands out, but still not that bad. I have both.

And I think hot sauce is about BOTH flavor and scoville rating. It should have great flavor and boast a high rating. If it gives one up for the other then it's not doing its job as a hot sauce. Hot sauce should not make your food taste like cardboard!

Franks Red Hot is the other brand I frequent besides Texas Pete, but I have a tendency to use way too much of it. :]

You're from Cincinnati that makes all your opinions about chili entirely void. :colbert:

The Volcano Taco is good, but it's level of spice really depends on how good the location is thats making it. Some places barely put any sauce.

Anyway... Taco Bell < Taco Bueno < Taco Cabana... however the same can be said for how much pain your other end will be in when you finish digesting each place.

thats the worst hot sauce I've ever had.

I've had more forms of chili than you could count on both hands, and you aren't from Cincinnati so your opinion on chili is naturally lacking. :v:

If you think that isn't hot, you're literally unable to taste.

The only thing that's made me cry ever though. Habaneros just taste really good--albeit a painfully spicy taste as well.
