Soda vs pop

I use them interchangeably, but I think we can all agree people from the south that call everything "coke" are just retarded.

You should set up a poll. And it is pop, not soda.
\(='_'=)/
2008-09-21, 2:53 PM #3
Having moved across the pop-soda boundary, I can tell you people are real idiots about it.

"Give me some pop."
"You mean soda."
"Whatever, give me some."
"It's soda, not pop. You sound like a retard."
"..."

Yeah why no poll?

And it's soda.

I call it soda, but no. Just no. :suicide:

None of the above. I refer to drinks by brand (or closest thing in the case of cheap knockoffs).

Indeed.

I don't drink soda anymore anyways, so it really doesn't matter.

I'm in the South, and I guess I call any kind of dark soda a coke, although usually my friends and I are specific. IE, "Would you like some Dr. Pepper or some Diet Coke?"

You guys that say pop are aliens.

Soda for me.

Being from California and Arizona, I say soda, but I now live in Oklahoma, where everyone says everything.

Leave it to the south to refer to everything as coke :XD:

By brand, or specific -ade if it's a cheap brand. Don't really have a lot of fizzy drinks anyway.

Soft drink...

Soda if being generic (IE "Drinking soda is bad for your teeth!"), but brand-specific if, well, talking about a certain drink. This is because I'm from California and I go to school in the northeast.

What the hell is "other"? I can only think of "soft drink" ...

So do people that call it coke, not drink non-coke?

I guess it's because there is some kind of telepathic communication or something. I worked at a resort for a while (In "soda" land) someone asked for a coke. I gave them a coke. They wanted a root beer. WTF
2008-09-21, 4:19 PM #19
I'd call it a soft drink but since I always call it by the brand name I have no need to.

Where I'm from, it's pop.
2008-09-21, 5:02 PM #21
coke is cocacola!!!! morons!

pop just sounds retarded, so i guess you yanks should just go with soda.

in england we just say "fizzy drink/soft drink" but usually we can be bothered to name the actual drink individually.

Coke. It's like kleenex. :colbert:

Everyone around here says a mixture a "tissue" and "kleenex".

When someone asks "Would you like a tissue?", I get the visual image of them giving me a part of an organ :P

I use soda as a generic term, but I usually use a brand name.

I'm from Florida and it gets annoying when people call everything coke.

Born and raised in CA so I call it soda. However, I prefer to refer to the drink but it's name brand rather than call is soda to avoid confusion.

I also find if funny how when buying a soda/pop/coke at a restaurant and I say "Pepsi", they get confused and ask if I meant a Coca-Cola and vica versa. You'd think people would know that they're the same flavor but from different companies.

I live in a pop county and I call it pop. Big surprise there.

I live in Kentucky where many people call it coke. However, the vast majority of blacks in the area call it pop. The yuppies (not sure what they're called nowadays) in the area call it soda. It's not like you go in to a restaurant & say "hey man, give me a soda" and they look at you like you're speaking Mandarin or something. I don't usually drink soda & if I do, I simply ask for the specific soda that I want (e.g. Sierra Mist, Sprite or 7up).
? :)

No. :colbert:

Kleenex works because the other brands the word refers to provide the exact same functionality, such that swapping them does not create a relatively discernible difference. If "coke" is used to refer to Pepsi, RC Cola or similar, then it would be okay. But other soft drinks are not interchangeable with Coca-Cola.

If you look at the regions where people say other, it's usually areas where you can guess there's a high Latino or Native population that don't speak English. Or areas where they refer to a local soda, like Cheerwine in North Carolina.

The chart is interesting, but I wouldn't take it without a grain of salt.

This.

All I can picture is this scenario:

man: "uh yeah fix me with that there coke"
server: "that theres a mighty fine choice, did yall want the regular, clear coke, green coke, or orange kind?"
"They're everywhere, the little harlots."

How is Pepsi interchangeable?

If you ask me for a soda, I'm replying with "Orange or grape?". :P

Pepsi is, by and large, the same as Coca-Cola. A lot of people can't tell the difference, and even more don't care.

That's like saying Kleenex and Puffs aren't interchangeable because Puffs uses a different pulp mixture that results in a slightly softer texture.

People can't tell the difference?

I know for one -- I don't CARE....Like you said. But they are very different IMO.
But they are for sure completely different.
But I hate sodas. I drink Monsters way too much though.
2008-09-21, 7:02 PM #37
They are not "completely different." Their ingredients are almost entirely the same. They are the same class of flavor.

...it doesn't matter. They are still different products.
2008-09-21, 7:06 PM #40
*shrugs* They taste different to me, I can easily tell the difference. Maybe I have super taste buds. But I am a bit of an oddity. (Hate Cucumbers love pickles, hate tomatoes love tomato sauce so on) People tell me I'm weird when it comes to what I eat and what I don't. I can't think of any examples off the top of my head, all I can think of is same thing, just different like I said. But I don't like Pepsi, I like coke.
