Of course they are. That was only an example of when it may be acceptable to refer to both of them as "coke" since they are so similar, just as "kleenex" can refer to any brand of facial tissue. It's a genericized trademark. The point was that other soft drinks are so different that they shouldn't be called "coke" to maintain clarity.

I guess it's a bad example, largely because of the stupid fanboyism and how Coke fans insist that Coke is totally superior to Pepsi and vice versa, when in reality they're damn near the same thing.

I notice coke gives me far worse acid indigestion then pepsi does. Its kind of odd.

To me Pepsi is more "smooth" and coke is more "crisp" so I can see that.

The difference between coke and pepsi stands out about as much as the difference between water and gatorade for me. :colbert:

I hear it most often called coke out here. I'm even guilty of slipping and saying coke instead of soda...so yeah, I'm one of those people who (tries to) say soda.

Only because pop came to have a different meaning for you. :omg:

Mine says 'soda' when I open it. What about yours? :tfti:

I grew up in Seattle Washington where everyone said soda and I moved to West Virgina where everyone said pop.

It'll always be soda to me

Yeah, I dunno why we make that assumption, but it's a popular belief that only Americans say soda.

That being said, I do say pop but most of the time I say the name brand I want

I've always heard the same stereotype of Americans calling it Soda up here in Canada too. I always call the individual can by its name that I want, but if I have to I always use Pop, never Soda. Whatever other is, I know I don't use that.
2008-09-21, 11:50 PM #56
We just call them "lemonade".

And both "soda" and "pop" sound really fine to me but calling every soft drink "coke" is just so wrong that it can only occur on a certain region of the country.

Oh snag.

Anybody that thinks Mountain Dew, Root Beer, Orange Crush, Grape Crush, or another such flavored drink should be called "Coke", should be immediately shot.

The entire region that compromises the "coke" lot, probably already owns guns, so good luck with that =P

Wow, didn't think you guys would be up in arms over the difference between Pepsi and Coca-Cola. I've always consider them to be the same flavor with minor differences. Maybe I should had compared Mountain Dew to Surge or Sprite to 7-up or Dr. Pepper to Mr. Pibb to make my point more clear. Then again, you guys are probably face palming at those examples and are already writing a huge response that would make Jon'C go "TLDR".

well dr pepper and mr pibb are different... especially after pibb xtra came about and replaced mr pibb

mountain dew and surge are also noticably different... surge would be more comparable to vault... but seeing that surge is discontinued and vault is made by coca-cola (who made surge)

sprite and 7-up will probably get the fewest arguements about them being almost identical or if you compared brands of root beer...

or the ultimate in it all tastes the same... orange soda... sunkist, fanta, generic... it's all the same

I've lived in enough places that I use "soda," "cola," and "pop" interchangeably (I've even grown up in areas where they call everything "coke," then again, they "mash" buttons and "cut" off lights). I get fairly annoyed when people tell me that it's "pop" when I say "soda," I don't care, I just want a goddamned drink, not an update to their dialect preference.

Coke and Pepsi are worlds different. Pepsi is a very sweet, much smoother cola. New Coke is basically pepsi. Coke is very different.

I would call you a soft drink snob, except real soft drink snobs don't go near mainstream drinks. Drinking Coca-Cola is the soft drink equivalent of Budweiser.

Well, maybe Diet Coke. :P

I'm in Texas, and if you want a Coca-cola at a restaurant you ask for coke, if you want anything else you say sprite, dr. pepper, whatever. If you are at a friends place, and they offer you something to drink, and you say coke, you could get anything from coke to root beer. This is most reasonable.

This isnt true. They drink Dr. Pepper made from real sugarcane. The ones you order from their small plant in TX. They say its worlds better then the High Fructose version, and once you try it you'll never go back. This concerns me considering I dont have $12 and two weeks to shell out every time I want a 6 pack. Being a non coffee drinker, I defenitely need my alternatives T.T

If I'm at a friend's house, the verbiage is usually "carbonated beverage" or "tasty drink". If I'm at a restaurant I ask for a "fountain drink".
Also, I can kill you with my brain.

considering your relating it directly at me, I've never had it before. Personally I dont give a ****, if its fizzy, flavored, non aspartame, and caffeinated I'll drink it, reguardless of "name brands".

If you don't care, then you shouldn't have brought it up. I'm not some soda snob either, but I don't kid myself into thinking that Coke or Dr. Pepper are the ultimate beverages.
Bassoon, n. A brazen instrument into which a fool blows out his brains.
2008-09-23, 3:10 PM #77
Also why did you mention "non aspartame," out of curiosity?
Bassoon, n. A brazen instrument into which a fool blows out his brains.
2008-09-23, 3:26 PM #78
I brought it up because I read somewhere on the internet randomly that some people who are soda "enthusiasts" like to drink dr pepper made with real sugercane because they prefer the taste due to it being closer to the original soda. furthermore I defenitely don't think that coke or dr pepper are the "ultimate beverages". I prefer Mt. Dew over them all.

And non aspartame because the stuff gives me a wickid headache, pretty much with anything containing it.

I can easily tell the difference between sprite, 7-up, squirt, and sierra mist.

Sierra Mist has a funny flavor to it. A hint of suck that makes it discernible from everything else.

Squirt isn't supposed to be the same as the others.
