Best game ever (at the moment)
2004-08-08, 7:10 AM #1
Simple question, explain if you want.

My answer is Deus Ex. I'll give you some taste why I came to this choice, as you probably know, there are damn many games. Nice story, but it gets interesting after one part. The level design is good, even though not anything spectacular. There is this magical feeling present everytime I play it. And I love it. However, I know this game isn't perfect, I just think it's the best game ever. At the moment. Yes...

So, post your opinion.

I've been playing Battlefield 1942. Nice gameplay for LAN if ya ask me.

Story wise, don't laugh, but I liked XWA's side story A LOT. There are a few other good story games but I can't remember them ATM

EDIT: Another great gameplay game would have to be Master of Orion 2. They totally screwed up MOO3 [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif] Main reason is that they made my Psilons all wrinkly and ugly... Plus, I'm not fond of the whole real time battle for MOO3

What's the matter with XWA's plot? I also enjoyed it.

(And for some people, "I also enjoyed it." isn't a reason)

Raven Shield (or any R6 game for that matter) and Thief 3. I Can't speak for the other Thief games because I've never played them, reason being that the demos have some kind of graphic error on my PC and I don't feel like getting the game if it's going to have the same problem.

Either Mafia or Beyond Good & Evil

I've got a soft-spot for atmospheric 3rd person action-adventures.

Mafia is just stylish in every aspect. Very well realised plot. Prohibition-era buildings, vehicles, clothing, and music. The best and most cinematic gunfights and chases that I've played in a game. Very good sound and voice acting.

Beyond Good & Evil is a gem that no-one played. Very similar in feel to other French or Belgian games such as Outcast or the Little Big Adventure/Twinsen games (which are just as good and have many of the same aspects). Vivid colours. Surreal and alien worlds to explore that are inhabited by a variety of bizarre creatures. Wonderfully strange soundtrack. Nicely branching plot that gives you plenty of time to explore.

Runner-ups: Anachronox, Outcast, LittleBigAdventure 2, Grim Fandango.

Medal of Honour: Allied Assault

Probably the game I've spent the most hours playing. Hell I still play it these days, and it was released a long time ago now.

Runners up would be Mafia, BF1942, UT2k4, Half Life, and Rainbow 6. Oh and if we're talking console, FIFA 2003, GoldenEye, and Mario Kart: Double Dash.

Half-Life.

There has been so many things done with this game, it is probobly the most modded game ever to exist, and probobly the game that has lasted the longest as well. I used to think Jedi Knight, but as we all know, it is dying/and or dead.

I'm going to take this further and catergorize my favorites. These are my personal picks. I did not take my console games into account.

Best Single Player: Call of Duty
Best Multi Player: Tie between Unreal Tournament 2004 and Call of Duty(with honorable mention of MOHAA Liberation mode)
Best Story: Max Payne 2
Best Intro: Tie between C&C Red Alert and Red Alert 2
Best Ending: Max Payne 2
Best Characters: Warcraft III and expansion
Best Sound: Thief II (which will probably change to Thief III when I get the game)
Best Graphics: Far Cry
Best Mood: Far Cry
Best Replayability: Neverwinter Nights and expansions
Best FPS: Call of Duty
Best Strategy: Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour
Best RPG: KotOR
Best Vehicle/Flight Simulator: X-Wing Alliance
Best Overall: Call of Duty
Biggest Disappointment: Tie between Ultimate Combat and Superpower
Most Promising Demo: Ground Control II(if I can just get the feel for the controls and lack of detailed tooltips, this should be a good game. Also, I have the Theif III demo, I just can't get it to work).

The games I currently play: X-Wing Alliance, Far Cry, Ground Control II demo

Starcraft. Best sprite-based graphics ever made. Coolest cutscenes, coolest music, best story (deus ex would be a close second!), and the best gameplay of any RTS I've ever known. (and I have played alot!)

On a side note, I just reinstalled XWA this morning out of boredom(hadn't played in almost 2 years), and I've been glued to my seat all day, played almost 8 hours straight. I've forgotten how good it was. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Vice city, b/c it lets you do all the sick twisted things that you can't do in real life b/c of the consequences.

For example, after I come home from driving on the freeway and some dips*** slows the whole freeway down by making a stupid mistake and crashing, I get pretty mad at poking along at 10 mph while everyone brings the whole freeway to a crawl by watching the poor dumbaa** stand by his totaled car. When I'm on the road, I pretty much hate all the other people on the road b/c they drive like morons.

I come home, and I can take out my road-accumulated anger on the hapless citizens of Vice city w/o any consequences. I run over pedestrians, smash into other cars, pass slow moving cars on the sidewalk at full speed (like any one here who drives has yearned to do in slow traffic, admit it.

GTA3/Vc is just a great way to blow off some steam w/o getting into real trouble.

I whole heartily agree with you. That game has a spirit like no other. It's full of everthing that makes a great game. Except it didn't feel like I was playing a game. It felt like I was there, I got sucked in and it never let go. I still play it a for an hour or two a week. Just to feel it's power.

Anybody play Spycraft: The Great Game?

It was made by Activision, came on three cd's, and was the best thing I've ever played - it was effectively an interactive movie, but an amazing experience - I've never been so sucked into puzzles or anything like that before or since. On a sidenote, anybody got it and willing to part with it?

Oh, and aside, I'll chuck in votes for Deus Ex, and for the mighty System Shock 2.

I would like to include more but I'm not a big gamer. So I will just chose the two primary genres I play.

Best RPG: Neverwinter Nights (including expansions), although KotOR is a VERY VERY close 2nd.
Best RTS: WarCraft 2

Honorable mentions:
Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time
Final Fantasy VI
Chrono Trigger
Call of Duty
Battlefield 1942 (including secret papers & expansion)
