Tech support: why does my laptop sucks
2008-10-07, 4:35 PM #1
Hey like a couple years ago I got this laptop, see, and it was pretty okay. I could play HL2 and Garry's Mod on medium settings so I was happy.

After a while, it got to running not so well. Garry's Mod would run quickly if I looked at the ground all the time, but if I looked around at stuff it would slow to like 1 fps, even if I turned the graphics all the way down. Other games and Windows slowed down too and became ****ty.

Now, it's even worse. All the games run like crap and the only way I can get a smooth framerate in Garry's Mod is to turn the graphics AND resolution as low as they will go.

I have tried running spyware scans and defragging over and over, but it doesn't seem to have helped. Also, for what it's worth, I lost my windows CD rom.

Did you lose your Windows CD ROM?

that's a good start

how do I do that? :psyduck:
2008-10-07, 9:04 PM #8
Um to prevent them from starting up, you could use msconfig, or you could delete the registry entries under:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
Might be some services you want to shut off too.

would i need to find the registry keys for each and every one of those things?
2008-10-07, 9:06 PM #10
its easier to use msconfig.

dont bother turning off apple services though because they'll just turn themselves back on once you run an apple application agian.

also, in msconfig can I just click "disable all" in the startup tab, or will that disable critical programs?
2008-10-07, 9:07 PM #12
Eh, I'm showing you a manual way of doing it. Someone else here might be able to give you an easier solution.

Not critical ones, but maybe ones you use.

how in the world do you have 90 processes running? you need to look up some of these and kill any that you don't need.

2008-10-07, 9:11 PM #16
can I disable stuff in the "services" tab too, or is that not permanent when I restart?
2008-10-07, 10:41 PM #17
For the love of cake, just backup all your beloved photos, music, games and other apps and reformat regularly. (so, yeah, find another windows CD)
2008-10-07, 10:52 PM #18
I usually just sort by how much memory is being used and close large programs that don't need to be running (right click-end process)

no kidding..I thought I had a lot running, and I have 44 processes!
woot!
2008-10-07, 11:05 PM #20
Right now I have 70 processes running with 815 threads. It's really not that much. It's just that most of those aren't using much RAM and are idle.

First thing I'd do is kill AIM/AOL and get a real IM client. 90MB of usage for a goddamn AIM-only client is ridiculous.

HOLY SWEET ****ING ****EBAGS.
nope.
2008-10-08, 8:33 AM #24
Okay, so I went through msconfig and turned off all the processes that didn't seem like ones I needed and the only adverse effect was my touchpad stopped working properly

The computer ran a lot better, but I booted it up again this morning and everything is back again.

Get another copy of a windows XP disc, format your computer. and reinstall only the applications you need.. I do this about ever six months, because I eventually have it loaded with crap again.

Use CCleaner to clean your registry, temporary files, and startup programs (You could also use MSCONFIG to help too).

Yeah, 90 PROCESSES?! No wonder. Stop ANYTHING that isn't required before playing a game. You'll be flying in no time.

Oh yeah, most programs have the option "Launch on windows startup" in their options, turn it off. And some may even be in the Startup folder in your startmenu, remove those too.
2008-10-08, 11:56 PM #34
Sweet buttery Jesus, I think something broke inside me when I saw the task manager screenshot.
2008-10-09, 10:56 AM #35
well, I used ccleaner and msconfig to turn off the processes, but they never last more than one restart--past that, the processes all just come back.

also now I have XP Antispyware 2009, lol
2008-10-09, 11:11 AM #36
Umm, I think that is a fake antispyware software. I could be mistaken, but I'll check google.

no, I know it's a fake. i'm just complaining cause it put itself on my computer.

it's sort of half-fixed right now...malwarebytes claimed to remove it, but there's still an annoying thing in the taskbar that tells me my system is infected. malwarebytes seems to have removed the part of it that blocks the task manager though, so I can end the process manually

kind of annoying, though
