If your CD key is a laptop OEM you /might/, but there are guides on the internets that tell you how to burn a copy of the disc that will work with those OEM keys.

the jellybean keyfinder will pull your xp key - it should be on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop though.

you can get the mce 05 oem discs the same places you can get other software online

if you want to try to clean this install i can probably walk you through it though - we do it several times a day in our shop.

I guess I'll try and reformat, but I have a bunch of music stuff I'll probably have to move over to my other computer

where's a good place to buy OEM cds? I would look myself but I'll probably get my money taken by unscrupulous russians

call the laptops manufacturer. they will sell you recovery discs for like 50bux.

This is why I like Vista.

There's more then one way to remove a fake antivirus people. Just google it first before reformatting. It's never a good idea to reformat right off the bat.

it's sort of half-fixed right now...malwarebytes claimed to remove it, but there's still an annoying thing in the taskbar that tells me my system is infected. malwarebytes seems to have removed the part of it that blocks the task manager though, so I can end the process manually

kind of annoying, though


My sister had this on her computer. Run Malwarebytes in safe mode, that'll fix it.

for customer's machines i'd rather clean it than reformat because that takes less time than backing up all their stuffs - trying to get them to find their install disc for quicken, etc.

also thrawn - what model laptop is it? it's probably got a recovery partition - in which case you wouldn't need discs at all.

Solution: People should have their stuff backed up. Reformat at will.

IT'S BACK

Malwarebytes got it down to a manageable thing (there was still a process in the taskbar that annoyed me with messages, but i could close it with the task manager), then a Windows update removed that thing for good

But a couple minutes ago my computer abruptly restarted (right after someone linked me to an encyclopedia dramatica page, could be coincidental but the chan guys aren't exactly strict about ad content) and now it's back. AND this time I don't see a process in the task manager. ****cock

Some are tricky. With some of them you have to *really* know your way around the system32 folder to get rid of them.

i ended a bunch of processes trying to get rid of it and accidentally shut off my touchpad driver
