Who doesn't have an HDTV yet?
2008-10-27, 4:55 PM #1
Me. .(

I can get a 40" Samsung 1080P LCD at Sears for $715. Whaddyathink?

I wanted a 42", but I don't think that there's enough difference between the two to be really concerned about.
woot!

I haven't. My family do, but it's a small TV they bought to put in the kitchen. Our main TV is just your standard sort, but my Dad has been talking about replacing it lately.
2008-10-27, 5:21 PM #3
I don't.

In fact, every picture displaying device I own is an aeons-old CRT. Two monitors, two TVs.

But that's understandable. I'm but a poor student.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

I don't like woot because it seems to only have preowned stuff. Anyhow that's an excellent deal for a Samsung 1080p TV at that size. I'm imagine there will be more deals as Black Friday draw near. http://forums.slickdeals.net/forumdisplay.php?sduid=0&f=9&daysprune=7&icon=0&tagid=0&sort=lastpost&order=&icon=28 is a great site for keep an eye on good HDTV deals.

I can actually get a deal from Samsung seeing that a cousin of mine just got recently employed as an engineer at the development facilities of Samsung's (in Korea.) My cousin can write it off.

Woo. Free stuff.

I have a 46" Samsung. I love it.

I have one arriving on the way.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

not a console gamer, dont watch movies/tv shows on tv, sooo... i dont have a tv, let alone a reason to get one.
2008-10-27, 8:01 PM #17
I picked up a cheapo one 26" DVD combo at Best Buy for $450. The only really downside is the vertical viewing but I have it in my bedroom and my room is small enough its not a problem. Other than that, it's great. The black is black enough for me. Picture is great.

I was moving and didn't have a TV. If I already had an old TV I probably wouldn't have bothered to get a HDTV. But a 26" DVD HDTV for 450 is hard to say no to.

My girlfriend paid a lot of money for that tv; I want to watch ALL OF IT. - JM

I have my own 32" LCD HDTV, and my grandfather has a 42" rear projection.
2008-10-27, 8:50 PM #22
Nope. I've got a 21 inch CRT in my room, 27inch CRT in my bro's room, and 32inch CRT in the living room.

My parents plan on getting an HDTV, and so do I, but right now, we ain't got one. :P

What he said!
It's worth dealing with huge lines. And sometimes you might get to see a fight (A couple years ago a fist fight broke out in Best Buy, it was awesome)

edit crap you posted already - You CAN shop other places than sears, ya know :)

FYI 1080P = 1920x1080 Progressive Scan. 1920x1200 is 16:10 PC monitor resolution, 24inch if I'm not mistaken. Technically, that's higher than HD.

I think he means 720p, in which case, yeah even my 17inch LCD is higher-res than HD :P (1280x1024 ftw!)
2008-10-27, 9:39 PM #29
Well.. does it really make a difference?
I know my TV has a lower resolution than most (1080i) and I'll be damned if I can notice a difference between this and the rest.
2008-10-27, 9:43 PM #30
I just connected my Dell M1530 laptop (if I need to remind anyone, it's native resolution is 1920x1280) to my 42" HDTV with the nifty little HDMI jack on side. I figured this was the only good thing it's for right now.

The colors are a little off (I tried to fix but I gave up) the refresh rate is terrible (the windows even started flickering for some reason. 30Hrz was the highest). And I don't have a wireless keyboard and mouse yet to fully operate on.

Portal was fun on it though.

Overall, things look better on my native laptop screen. What a learning experience.

******* at Best Buy told me there wasn't.. and I would have spent more money if he told me there was ... Odd.

First off, a general tip is to not listen to the ****tards at Best Buy or Circuit City trying to sell you ****, even if you do save money.

Secondly, I disagreed with you just for kicks. I honestly am not too familiar with HDTV technology yet. I apologize.

Yeah, my bad- I was thinking PC resolutions. They're down to 22" now, I think.

No, read "HDTV plug in jack thing what the hell you call it. It's like a slot on the left side of my laptop I can plug the HDMI cable into"

Ahh, I see what I've done there.

The fam has a 720P DLP projector (104" right now) and a 52" DLP 1080P TV. I use neither; my 360 is hooked to my 1920x1200 p-mva 24" monitor (although sometimes i hook it to the projector because the sound is OMFG AWESOME in their home theater)

I rarely turn my tv on.
True, we have an xbox360, ps3 and wii here, so theres plenty of reason to turn it on, but it doesn't happen that often, we're pretty pc-centric.
And even though I admit hd looks better, it's not omglemmegetmywallet better.

The difference between 1080p and 1080i isn't huge, but it's there. Basically, 1080p renders the entire image at once, while 1080i processes even lines, then odd lines, then repeat. It'll cause flickering on low refresh rates.

I'm not too good at explaining it, so hopefully someone will pitch in.

Progressive Scan vs Interlacing? I remember them teaching us about this in film school a year ago. Wasn't really pertinent to the course but rather side-information. The most basic explanation for it I could find was on the (ew) wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_scan
