Old school video game cheat codes
2008-10-31, 8:43 PM #1
Post cheat codes to old games. The older, the better. No cheating by looking the codes up, the object is to see who of us have what codes still memorized from games that came out years ago. Don't forget to post what the code does.

I'll start with the obvious:

Dark Forces

laimlame - invincibility
lapostal - all weapons and ammo
larandy - supercharge
lantfs - I think this was the code to revel the entire map
lapogo - disabled height checking, allowed you to climb up onto impossibly high ledges (old school version of noclip)
laredlight - I believe this was the code used to freeze all the enemies

Jedi Knight

raccoonking - all force powers

I went to post more for Jedi Knight, and realized that I've forgotten all of the rest. I'm sure someone else will post them shortly...

Jedi Knight

Do Game Genie codes count? I know a friend who still remembers the code to infinite lives in Battletoads...even the sound it makes when you input it.

I'm guessing doom... never played it, but I know all the codes started with "id."

Sure do, and they're even more impressive if you remember them, since they're just random characters...

Anyone ever play Twisted Metal 2 for PC? I remember modifying the save game files (which were stored in the registry :psyduck:) so I could play as one of the boss vehicles. Not a "cheat code" per se, but the JK/MoTS ones were already mentioned and those are about the oldest that I know.

Godmode in Doom was iddqd, not iddq.
And while idkfa gave you all weapons, armor and keys, idfa gave you the same without the keys.
idclip was the no-clipping code and I think idclev was to switch levels.

if idclip was the noclip code, what then did idspispopd do?
2008-11-01, 5:37 AM #23
I just looked it up, apparently idclip was the cheat in Doom 2.

I rarely memorized the codes. I printed them out and kept them in a folder. I just looked for the folder, but I think I threw it away a few years ago. It had cheats for games like Terminal Velocity, some Robocop game, Jazz Jackrabbit, etc in it.

That reminded me, in the original Sim City, if you held down shift and typed either FUND or FUNDS, you got $10,000 I think (up to about $80,000). If you did it too much, you caused an Earthquake... so I would always do it right away at the start of the game before I had built anything.

Of course but, as the article states, Contra made it famous.

Quote:
The code was first used in the 1986 release of Gradius for the Nintendo Entertainment System [3] but was made famous in North America in the NES version of Contra.

Most of the ones that I had memorized were for DF and JK because I played the crap out of those games. For most other games I just kept them in a binder and referred to them whenever I needed to. I haven't used cheats in years, really sucks the fun out of games (except I might have occasionally to skip something that's really frustrating me, though I usually end up going back to it at some point).

I personally play through the games without cheats for the first time (and for the first time I've played a certain game in years) and afterwards mostly with cheats because they usually make the game more fun.

OR as far as current games go, there aren't cheats around anymore so no wonder I go back to old classics for fun spawning millions of goons and eradicating them with highly explosive materials. Gooood times.

I preferred PRISCILLA myself

Also, in SimCopter typing "I'm the CEO of McDonnell Douglas" gives you all of the choppers, including an Apache. There was another one that turned you into a hyper-active dog that can climb walls, but I don't remember it.

Anyone remember the codes for ROTT? Only one I can remember at the moment is "badtrip". I know as soon as I hear the others it'll come right back to me.
