Um, no, prison is a very different thing.
But I won't get into that or I know how this thread will end up

I don't see how it is, especially since criminals end up spending as many as 30 years in prison (death row) after having been given the death sentence

Yes, YES I DID call you all a bunch of disgusting hypocrits.

Now you know EXACTLY how I feel every time I see an abortionist. Bloodlust sums it up quite well.

I think what their point in regards to your post JM might be the fact that you came across as if you were comparing Torturing THEN murdering a baby, to abortion. I cannot speak for them though, but that's definitely what I thought.
2008-11-12, 9:15 PM #45
Clearly that's exactly what I was doing.

Your mistake was assuming I was equating them. Lets make this very clear. > is a comparison. < is a comparison. = is a comparison. Oh gee, that covers every possibility. See, equating is comparing but comparing is not equating! Oh your God!

As someone who enjoys rhetoric, I love that you call the other side of the debate "abortionists"

As someone who's pro-choice, it gets on my nerves.

a) With regards to the topic: Words cannot express my horror and outrage about the abuse of an innocent child like that.

b) This thread is not about abortion, it's about the horrific abuse of a small child who has already been born, and possibly about the police force and social services. There was no need to bring it up, except maybe to spur an argument. Is there any way we can keep it out of the conversation before it turns into a flame war?
Fincham: Where are you going?
Me: I have no idea
Fincham: I meant where are you sitting. This wasn't an existential question.

I don't know what's gotten into JM lately, but he seems to be on a sort of non-subtle trolling spree, even (temporarily?) replacing Rob as king. I liked it better when he kept us guessing.

(This is in really bad taste. If it offends someone I'll take it down. But it was so related to Steven's post, I couldn't resist)

I didn't really find what JM said offensive or trolling really. Just unnecessary.

The comic is genius.

As an aside, I'm of the belief that society should be able to rise above bloodlust and just lock them away and never let them out. And I still don't see what the police have got to do with this - their powers don't move into the decision making process of whether parents are fit or not, they only assist in physically taking children into care if they're needed, and give any relevant evidence they may have come across when asked by social services, or indeed by the courts and crown prosecution service.

sugarless i would find it offensive if you took that comic down.

also... easy way to solve the whole spending too much money on inmates... bring back the gladiatorial games! takes care of the inmates, and if you charge and admission then you have a great source of revenue for the local economy :awesome:
Welcome to the douchebag club. We'd give you some cookies, but some douche ate all of them. -Rob

But lions and tigers are so rare these days! Costs would soar. Metal is also expensive, but perhaps sharpened toothbrushes could substitute for swords.

I think this sub-topic needs more :hist101:
Why do the heathens rage behind the firehouse?

I like Alrans idea. It's better than my dungeon prison and slave work idea.

Your comparison was:
A) the baby was born / abused and people are appalled
B) Could have been aborted, people would be okay with that

Either way, you're equaling them on some level. Especially when you go and call everyone disgusting hypocrites.

Erm the police could take the baby and arrest/charge the lady with assault and abuse. In this case, they did not because they thought there was not enough evidence. Yet, doctors determined that the child's injuries were most likely caused from someone else inflicting them. You're a pretty dumb and epic fail cop if you ignore this, do not charge or arrest her upon the evidence presented by the DOCTORS at the HOSPITAL more than ONE TIME, and give the child back if you ask me..
2008-11-13, 3:59 PM #66
It's not the police who make those decisions. Blame the district attorney.

If that were true, then we would put them in prison for life which would accomplish the same thing for less money.

Which really speaks ill of our bureaucracy. We should be able to accomplish due process and a fair trial in a timely manor with out spending more than it takes to support a person for his entire life. Seriously, we should use the death penalty more. In cases where the guilt of the offender can be determined beyond the shadow of a doubt, and the offense is capitol, the benefits of trying to reform such a person far outweigh the efforts and risk he poses to the rest of society. This is how humans have always dealt with grossly anti-social behavior, and with proper due process, I see no reason to change that.

The idea that it's somehow more humane to confine a person to a small area for their entire lives is simply idiotic. If anything it is less humane. Prison is a cruel, unnatural punishment, and because it forces criminals to associate with other idle criminals, it only reinforces recidivism.

So.. Wait.. Ok I get it that I may have it wrong.. But you mean to tell me that a cop can walk into my house, see that I possess Marijuana, and arrest me on the spot/charge me and have me thrown in jail. However, if I walk into a hospital with a bleeding child with a half a ****ing ear torn off, and the doctors determine and inform the police the injuries were inflicted by someone else rather than the child, they are powerless to arrest the woman and do anything?

That makes absolutely zero sense (even though that's just how it works as you say it does, and I would take your word above anyone Else's). Where is the justice in that?

From the bbc: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7728630.stm

An official inquiry into that case by Lord Laming made a raft of recommendations for child protection procedures, and the government has now asked him to check on their implementation across England.
The other inquiries are:

A government investigation of the role of all agencies in the case of Baby P, including the health authority, police and Haringey Council. The review by Ofsted, the Healthcare Commission and the Chief Inspector of Constabulary is due to make an initial report by 1 December

An "immediate independent review" announced by Haringey Council to examine its staff's actions and child protection across the borough

A review by the body that regulates social workers, the General Social Care Council, to look into potential breaches of its code of practice

Ok, so the police have to report too. But I still think it's social service who've had the bulk of the contact.

EDIT: Listening to the news on the radio this morning - social services visited the baby over SIXTY TIMES.
2008-11-14, 5:09 AM #70
It talks about the 60+ visits the kid had in the article above that was linked. Also, I think there were the 60 visits from social services, PLUS the hospital visits and police visits
